My opinion :-

I don't know if we can call it as Anti-Capitalism. However, I believe that this game has a strong message toward Nature and the danger of abuse of Nature by Man.

I think the game designers had envisioned our own World when they created the World of FF7, using oil and petroluem as basic for Mako energy which helps to fuel civlizations in such a short time (in about 100 years). The same substance which produced civilization and scientific progress, eventually created war machines and effects to wage war more easily.

In the same way, Shin Ra Industries started off as Energy Producing company, introduced Mako as energy, which begin a quick climb toward Scientific community in Midgar and other parts of the Western continent (when compared to the more ancient background like Wutai, Gongago, Mideel and Nanaki's Village (forgot the name)).

Uncontrolled climb toward Scientific progress without ethical guidelines can be seen in scenes between Professor Gast, Lucretia and Hojo. Gast - a man of science and knowledge - had created the SOLDIERS for defensive purposes (by giving birth to the most strongest SOLDIER ever - Sephiroth), He did it due to his own lack of knowledge (of Jenova) and his own ignorance, something he had regretted later.

However, Hojo continued in his own willingness to pursuit dangerous experiment for sake of ignorance and learning (very much like many scientists today are doing with Designer Drugs, Babies and Nano-technology) and produced dangerous byproducts like the DeepGround SOLDIERS. Eventually, the Mako energy and Science had produce wars (with Wutai), gave rise to AVALANCHE and finally, toward the end of the World in FF7 itself.

Sorry, I have never heard of such thing. I follow the writings of Professor Gast - in North Glacier town and inside Nibelheim Mansion which clearly stated that Shin Ra Industries was into energy business, prior to Wutai War (which started cos Wutai didn't allow Shin Ra Industries to drill for Mako in its region).

Furthermore, Gast had created Sephiroth with thought of infusing the Ancient and humans so Sephiroth could lead mankind toward betterment. Only mistake he ever made was assuming that Jenova was an Ancient (cos it took the resemblance of an Ancient to move around easily). He did not create weapons in form of SOLDIER but later, his process was hijacked by the Company to make more Jenova-enhanced humans with purpose of warfare, which was one of the reasons why Gast left Shin Ra Industries.

Not according to the notes left by Professor Gast at the mansion and at his cabin in northern glacier district which speaks of a different Shin Ra Industries.

According to him, profit was the main reason why Shin Ra was into various things like rocket science. They didn't cancel the rocket project, merely postpone it till further notice, which was why Cid was waiting for representatives from Shin Ra Industries and thought Cloud was one of them (cos he had Mako eyes).

According to Gast, Mako was discovered about the same time Jenova was discovered and one of the first (successful) reactors was the Mt. Nibelheim reactor which was on top of a mountain (and where jenova was found). Earlier reactors like that which was installed in Gongago and Coral Village was earlier models but it blew up, leaving people to wonder whether Mako energy was safe. Midgar was created as a project to change the people's mind about Mako, and Shin Ra was established as energy company. Therefore, it is possible that Shin Ra Industries was purely into energy production since the discovery of Mako. There is no records that they did anything other than Mako energy.

It wasn't impossible cos no one knew that Jenova was an alien. Professor Gast didn't knew when he started the experiment. He thought Jenova was just another Ancient (a higher evolutionary human being but a human being nevertheless). Even if humans and Ancient were different in term of genetic by 10 percent, they are humans with similar traits, therefore it is possible for them to recreate the Ancients through Science. That was Professor Gast's goal, which started the S Project.

Likewise, his theory states that the pyre-flies running throughout the Fayth currents on Spira is actually the power source Shin'ra steals for himself. He uses it on the Mi'Hen Highroad for his invention, but notices not enough of the pyre-flies are being consumed to generate power. So after the Vengagun device fails, he leaves Spira and travels to the new planet where he builds his new company. Supposedly then the Lifestream is uncovered on the new planet, which generates more power than pyre-flies, and allows them over 100 years later to have transformed all the Al Bhed technology to now suck the magic straight out of the ground.

While a rumor, this is one of the most interesting links mentioned between FF7 and FF10's game scenarios..
