For so long I've pretended that I know how to play it, is there any way to dodge the traps?

Have you found the Horror Monitor. That would help, push R and it goes into First Person View, it will lock on to potential shock events, then press A and it will mark it. Note: Using the Horror Monitor will cost you some adrenalin. But when you successfully mark a trap, win a fight, or use an item that recovers adrenalin you get back some adrenalin.

Ok, you have to find the Horror Monitor to find traps. It is always near the beginning of each level. You cannot block the first trap of the first level. Ok, walk forward and to the right. You should be next to a tree to the side of the porch of the building. If all of your senses are going off, you are in the right place. Hit the action button and you will get it. When one of your senses is going off you are near a fight, a trap or an item. Remember that. Also remember you have to find the Horror Monitor at the beginning of each and every level and it will always be near the starting point and all of your senses will go off when you are near it.
