Well, you just get crowns in adventure mode that a silver and pretty large, but they are pretty well hidden so you might have to really look for them.

I didn't know you had to get crowns to play 2 player. Does that person mean VS? 'Cause I could play VS before I got very many crowns....

But if you get 15 Banana faries yu can "unlock" krusha who is another character you can be. You get him in Mystery Mode.

Well, krusha is pretty strong, but all I really noticed of him that was different was that when he shoots bullets that are oranges that explode.
