Wonder Woman

Another one of DC's long running series. Wonder Woman has been in publication since the early '40s and the character has been a member of the JSA and JLA.

Here's a bio for Princess Diana of Themyscira.

Wonder Woman is Diana, the daughter of Hippolyta and a former princess of the Amazons of Themyscira. She is the reincarnated spirit of a human child who died in her mother's womb almost 30,000 years ago, brought to life by several Greek goddesses to combat the schemes of Ares, God of War.
These Greek goddesses, as well as Hermes, the messenger god, funneled the spirit into a clay sculpture crafted by Hippolyta, bringing it to life. Given special powers by each of these Olympians, Diana secretly entered a tournament designed to find the worthiest Amazon, who would go forth and confront the War God's evil. She won and, as Themyscira's champion, defeated Ares before he could bring about a nuclear holocaust.
Dubbed "Wonder Woman" by the press (and named after her mother, who later traveled back in time to World War II, where she used the name and garb of Wonder Woman), Diana became Themyscira's ambassador to the outside world, called "Patriarch's World" by the Amazons.

Hippolyta, the former queen of the Amazons, and her sister Antiope ruled the nation of Themyscira until their city was razed by Theseus and the ransacking demigod Heracles. Raped and humiliated by Heracles, Hippolyta led her Amazons to freedom. She and her followers were led by the Olympian goddesses to an island paradise, where they rebuilt the nation of Themyscira.
Queen of Themyscira for 3,000 years, Hippolyta yearned for a child, and created a sculpture of an infant girl from the clay of Paradise Island. The goddesses and Hermes, the messenger god, brought the clay figure to life. This child was named Diana, after a great and holy Amazon warrior. Diana won the sacred Contest and went forth into Man's World, becoming Wonder Woman.
Years later, a mystic vision foretelling the death of Wonder Woman prompted Hippolyta to call for a new Contest, using the sorceress Magala to weave a spell that allowed a challenger, Artemis, to win the title and weapons of Wonder Woman. Diana discovered the Queen's duplicity, but not before Artemis died at the hands of the White Magician. Apalled by Hippolyta's behavior, Diana once again claimed the mantle of Wonder Woman, mother and daughter alike believing the threat to her life had passed. But soon after, Hippolyta witnessed the mystic vision she so feared. The demon Neron attacked Wonder Woman and killed her.
The Amazons decreed that Hippolyta should do penance for abusing her royal power. Seeking retribution in her late daughter's eyes, Hippolyta became the new Wonder Woman. She joined the JLA and later time traveled to the 1940's and spent a number of years as a member of the Justice Society of America. After Diana's resurrection Hippolyta continued to don her own Wonder Woman armor. After abolishing the monarchy of Themyscira, Hippolyta valiantly perished at the hands of Imperiex, saving the universe from destruction. Her spirit is infused into the new Themyscira, guiding and protecting it.

More to come later about Artemis who also came to be known as Wonder Woman and Donna Troy (Wondergirl, Troia of the Titans) who is Diana's "twin sister".

I'll believe it when filming starts. There has been talk of a Wonder Woman movie since '97 or '98.

Wonder Woman's series is seriously going to be picking up. Greg Rucka who has written Detective Comics is going to be taking over the series.

He wrote an awesome Wonder Woman graphic novel about a year ago that had Batman and the Furies of myth. Batman and Wonder Woman were at cross purposes for most of this story.

Some of Rucka's previous comics credits are an awesome run on Detective Comics, Whiteout (his own series), Whiteout: Melt, Ultimate Daredevil and Elektra (miniseries), Wonder Woman: Hyketia (graphic novel costarring Batman).

He's currently writing the Gotham Central series (a police comic series in Gotham City!).

After Simonson finishes his current and final storyline on the Wonder Woman series, Rucka will be taking over as the next regular writer.

Wonder Woman #217 seems very late...I thought this arc was supposed to be bi-weekly?

The first two parts were great, I'm really loving this series. Rags Morales' pencilling is awesome, although I liked Drew Johnson's art too, and I'm looking forward to finding out who Cassie's father is. I wonder, is she really the child of a god?

I've been reading something in IGN. HAs there been something with Wonder Woman killing a man named Max Lord in order to save the world?

Yep, all revealed in Wonder Woman #219, which I really urge you all to buy. Trust me, one issue and you'll be hooked.

The WW/Supes fight was incredible and very brutal, and the ending with her snapping Max's neck was just amazing. Nice to see superheroes doing what they have to for a change, rather than spewing out the "We can't kill under any circumstances" crap.

Heh... keep in mind Superman has performed some executions before...

Yes.
I think the Amazon's have some sort of ideal of enforcing peace by force. I remember Batman started taunting her about that in Kingdom Come.

That "no kill" is irritating. Bit surprising that DC still follows the "no kill" (I think even the Huntress doesn't kill) rule when Marvel has got a whole bunch of characters (Wolverine, Punisher) who kill.
