Thanks for the comments, all. Conamara (I love Comarona, though ) came out quite well with the atmosphere it was supposed to portray, though I think it is a bit simplistic in places.

Yes, I find the high contrast of black pens to be the most effective (and enjoyable). Usually I work with a fine and an ultra fine nib which helps vary the weights and details. Will probably start sketching with markers again soon, perhaps combined with pen.
Giving up the Ghost does feature a robot, also.

Omegae3000, thanks for the long comments Stagnation was more of a mood piece, though I might produce similar artworks for my university project, which is on dystopian societies.
Clowns are pretty freaky, which is why I considered them to be a good metaphor for danger. I seem to remember one theory, as to why people don't like them, being that the make-up hides their features, which causes instant distust. Or it could just be because of Stephen King's IT ;p

I've been having issues with my monitor's brightness and I think all the artwork shown so far have been much lighter than I was originally seeing (for example, there were ugly brushmarks around the clowns that I couldn't see before because my monitor was displaying the picture too dark). I've corrected the colour and brightness in most of the work in the thread, but let me know if they now appear too dark.




014: Finding Home - DVD cover for a friend's film, called Finding Home. The film explores loneliness and isolation, and being alienated in the world, so I hope that's reflected in the artwork. I've omitted the text on the side and back, though you can see that version below.

Public House

My first marker sketch for a while. The building shape was actually an influence in the Finding Home piece. The perspective went slightly wrong at the bottom, unfortunately.

War Memorial

Near the seafront in Portsmouth rests a small memorial garden.

Whoa, I love the DVD cover, the colours and the emptiness really reflect the mood. The splatters at the top of the building makes me think that perhaps there is something more sinister going on. Also like how you've used the silhouettes and the bold, mono-tonal I guess, colours.

Thanks for the comments, all. Silhouettes play a large part in the films imagery, so it seemed appropriate to parallel them in the cover. Also, it gives the buildings an anonymous, fake, cardboard cut-out feel to them, which I felt complemented the themes of alienation within the narrative.

Ah, if you want to PM or post which piece you want as a wallpaper (plus screen resolution), I could probably resize/add borders so it's the correct size. Haha, I maintain that there are better wallpaper images out there, though ;p




015: 24 Hour Shift - Strange piece, I started it before the London bombings (I live on the outskirts) but finished it afterwards. The result isn't exactly a piece to the event - I'm not sure how appropriate it would be at this time - but it does reflect the change in mood around here. As the title suggests, I suppose.

My computer kept saving the jpg version darker than the psd, so I had to lighten it a bit. I think it's adjusted correctly, though.

I like wallpapers with a story behind it and it being made by somebody I somewhat know.
Right now, I have a background that I really like but I may PM you abit later. ^^

016: Introspection 005 - I was trying to get a nice textured look to the portrait using (pre-set) Photoshop brushes. This was one of my first attempts, so is a little ropey. The main point to these portraits is really to experiment with brushes and artistic styles. I did download some fractal brushes but it's too easy to get an aesthetically pleasing effect and feels... a little cheap, I suppose.

017: Shanna - Almost as much work went into the background as the actual portrait here I can't remember the exact brushes used, but I think they included the hard round, charcoal, chalk and spatter. Interesting model, may use her again if I can bear to go through Deviant Art's stock photos

018: Rachael - A more successful portrait, I feel, though the background isn't as interesting. Really went to town on the hair, as it was the style in the original photo that made up my mind to use it. Chalk, wet brush, hard round, watercolour and swirl brushes? Probably.

019: ??? - Who could this be? ;p An imaginary present for the first person to guess correctly. Clue: she's an evil overseer. I took a few artistic liberties - for example, I don't believe she has a red eye in real life, and the top she's wearing looks nothing like the one she was wearing on the day - but I feel they suited her personality more ;p Wet sponge brushes, rolled rag, texture comb and others I think...? Not keen on the background though, maybe a stronger focal point would have helped.

Wonderful works - I especially like 18 and 19. ^^

I love how the colors stay consistent with the pictures and the moods in each work.
