WMP 11 Problem

Well, I decided to try out the WMP (Windows Media Player) 11 beta and I had problems with it, first of all, when I'd try to synch my library (it didn't import), it crashed. Then when I tried to play the few files it did import, it would crash after about 30 sec.

This got really frustrating, so I rolled back to WMP 10, but the problems also came with it, so it won't work either.

There's nothing for it on Microsoft's site, and technical support kind of did nothing, so I was wondering if anyone here had any suggestions?

re: WMP 11 Problem

You should've taken heed when trying out the beta version but you could reinstall the OS.

Have you tried reinstalling WMP 10 after using system restore? Maybe you should try to uninstall and then reinstall WMP 10 although I'm not sure how to uninstall WMP although I'll bet a pretty penny that Hraefn does.

re: WMP 11 Problem

Microsoft's being a bitch and saying that you can't uninstall WMP because it's a feature of the Operating System. Well, actually, you can, but the method is so well hidden that it's hard to find. Anyway, here's how:

  • Click the START button and select Run.

  • Type in regedit in the command box.

  • When the regedit window appears, expand the HKEY LOCAL MACHINE by clicking on the plus sign to its right.

  • Now Click on the plus next to SOFTWARE, then MICROSOFT, then WINDOWS, then CURRENT VERSION and finally UNINSTALL

  • When you expand the Uninstall folder, you'll see all the programs currently installed, such as the uninstall Media Player 10 or Media Player, etc.

  • Click on the folder you want to uninstall, in the box on the right you will see several strings including UninstallString

  • Double click UninstallString and a box will appear with the uninstall string highlighted.

  • Right click on the highlighted entry and select COPY.

  • Close the Regedit window.

  • Select the START button and click RUN.

  • Right click inside the command box and paste the uninstall string and click OK to uninstall Windows Media Player.

You might be rolled back to WMP9 (if you have had it installed before). Otherwise, you can download and install WMP10 from here.

On a side note, before installing any beta software, it is always advisable to create a System Restore point before the installation, so you can roll back any changes if errors occur — and they do, especially for betas. =^^=

re: WMP 11 Problem

That did the same thing the roll back did, I don't know if it's the same, but you can do it that way through just going to Add/Remove programs and then click the show updates, go down to something Window's and WMP will be there.

Anyway, I did happen to have a system restore before I installed the 11 one, so I just went back to that, so thanks everyone...

re: WMP 11 Problem

Well, it says you need Windows XP Service Pack 2, so go and get it. Once you have that, you should be able to install WMP11 with no problem (but be sure to create a restore point first!). =^^=

re: WMP 11 Problem

I found on an Australian site to select 'show updates' and you will see WMP 11 in there - and it tells you it will roll back. We'll see - I'm encoding a couple movies first.

What I don't like about the new WMP 11 is that you cannot add files - inline to your playlist. It adds them to the end of the playlist. SUCKS !!!

Back to WMP10 or iTunes - MS continues heading in the wrong direction.

WMP11 is in beta, what do you expect. Even the WMP11 in vista beta 2 has a broken library. Itunes is horrible also. Media player classic can be used for everything. EVERYTHING. Quicktime, Real, you name it.

As long as you have the proper codecs to play those files. Actually I'm able to play quicktime files in WMP 10 with mega codec pack.

re: WMP 11 Problem

Meh, WMP 11 isn't really all that, in my opinion. The only good thing it had was its sleek design, but that just about the only upgrade. Since it's a Beta version, it has many glitches/problems/bugs. Also, it doesn't include a main menu, one to access different tools/options easily.

Last, but not least, my favorite feature of WMP (radio tuner) is practically innaccessible from the main window. It could be just me, but I had to visit the MSN Radio website just to access a radio station. Also, it doesn't even have the stations I want.

Stick with WMP 10, at least until a stable upgrade (WMP 11) is released.
