Dragon Age: Origins is the first RPG in the Dragon Age franchise; the game is set in the fantasy world of Ferelden where the player is recruited by the Gray Wardens during a time of strife. The player must defeat the Archdemon that is leading the Darkspawn invasion and also unite the people to oppose this threat.
It was developed by BioWare and published by EA in 2009 for the PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and PC.
The game is set in a massive open world which is spread across several central locations; the player can fast travel to many of these places which each contain open world zones.
Players create and customize their character at the start of the game; there are three races and classes to select from which impact the six origin stories the player can choose from. This decision influences how the game responds to the player and triggers different dialogue however every player follows the main plot.
There are four characters in the controllable party, and the player can control each character by switching between them; more characters can be unlocked depending on the choices the player makes and the player can select which party members they wish to take with them to missions. The characters not being controlled by the player are controlled by the computer and will follow the commands set in the Tactics menu.
Every character uses the same experience bar and can be leveled up side-by-side, including the party members who are at base camp and are not active party members. They all have a base playstyle, and the player can upgrade them around this or give them an entirely new skill build. Skills are unlocked through a skill tree system and have a cooldown that limits its use in battle. While most of the game is in a third person view, the player has an option to use a top-down view in combat along with the ability to pause the fight.
Forming relationships with characters is important, and the game uses a dialogue tree method where players can select what they wish to say; party characters each have a personal quest for the player to complete to strengthen their relationship. A high approval rating from some characters can allow the player to engage in a romantic relationship with them which will be commented on by other party members. Having a low approval rating can cause party members to leave the group or become enemies.
The game features many moral choices where the player can decide between several options; some of these will have a direct impact on the game, others will affect how the party members feel about the player, and several will also influence the next games in the series. Most quests in the game do not involve moral decisions, and many quests can be found from items away from towns.
