Demon's Souls is an action RPG and is the first game in the Souls series which include the Dark Souls games; the game is set in a dark fantasy world where the player has travelled to the kingdom of Boletaria to fight the evil that has covered the land in a cursed fog which is summoning demons.
The game was developed by FromSoftware and had different publishers for each region; the game was first released in 2009 as a PlayStation 3 exclusive
The world has a central hub called The Nexus where the player is able to store their items, repair equipment, level up and also use souls to learn magic. Souls are a form of currency that are dropped by demons upon their death and they are also dropped if the player dies; the souls will be dropped at the location of death and the player must reclaim them in order to keep them, if they die before reaching the souls then they are lost permanently.
The player is able to customize their character at the start of the game to select gender, appearance and also their name before deciding on character class. There are ten unique classes to select from which have their own statistics and gear which impacts how the player fight enemies; the statistics, weapons and gear are levelled up as the game progresses and the player can also equip stronger gear or weapons.
Bosses in the game do not respawn when the player dies, but all other enemies in the game will respawn when the player dies. Defeating a boss allows the player to choose a spawn point near that location, this acts like a checkpoint for the player on their death so they do not need to replay the entire level.
There is a morality system called Tendancy which impacts the gameplay; the actions of the player changes their Tendancy to either White or Black. Having a White Tendancy makes enemies much easier to defeat however the player is not well rewarded for selecting this path, having a Black Tendancy makes enemies more difficult and provides greater rewards. Tendancy in the game is fluid and comes in two forms, Character Tendancy impacts the player while World Tendancy impacts the region where the action was done.
Players can team up with a co-op feature that allows up to three players in one instance; when playing like this, the team join together to fight a boss and return to their own game once it has been defeated. There is also a PvP feature where a player can join another's game as a Black Phantom where the aim is to kill the host, if the Black Phantom is killed instead then the host is given a portion of the souls the Black Phantom had.
Another multiplayer related feature is the ability to leave messages in the single player world for others to see; players may also see the ghosts of other players completing actions in the levels and the bloodstains of dead players which can be viewed to show their final moments.
Completing the game raises the difficulty level of the game; the first win will increase the difficulty level by 40% if the player wishes to restart the game, each win after this will continue to increase the difficulty level by a much smaller percentage.
