Deadly Premonition: Director's Cut is the multiplatform remake of the cult classic mystery adventure game first released on Xbox 360 in 2010. The Director's Cut features remastered graphics complete with support for stereoscopic 3D displays. Players can also enjoy new scenarios devised by director Hidetaka "Swery65" Suehiro himself, providing additional perspectives and possibly a "new truth" for the original plotline.
In Deadly Premonition, players become FBI Special Agent Francis York Morgan as he investigates the mysterious "Red Seed Murders" plaguing the fictitious rural town of Greenvale. The game features an open world environment that players can explore on foot or by vehicle, advancing the plot by reaching important destinations. Players can also engage in various minigames found throughout Greenvale including darts and fishing.
A day and night system affects NPC schedules as well as York's own well-being; players must ensure York receives adequate rest and sustenance throughout his investigations lest his condition become negatively impacted. Even York's appearance may have an impact on other characters, encouraging players to maintain his appearance.
Players will be forced to defend themselves when they become trapped in the mysterious "Other World" filled with supernatural and disturbing enemies; York can use firearms and melee weapons to directly confront enemies, and players can have him hold his breath to avoid others. Players will be challenged to various quick time events, often with York's life at stake.
The original game faced polarizing critical reception, but was well received by players thanks to its homages to television series like Twin Peaks, the Director's Cut release suffered from technical issues including choppy framerate which affected gameplay. The PC release even lacked resolution configuration options by default, leading players to install unofficial, third party tools.
- Deadly Premonition's reception was considered so wildly divisive that it was actually honored as the "Most Critically Polarizing Survival Horror Game" in the 2012 Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition.
- The original game features some six thousand lines of dialog recorded from the voice actors, half of which were attributed to the main character York alone (portrayed by Jeff, not to be confused with the American film director).
This game is also known as Red Seeds Profile in Japan.
