Dead or Alive 4 is the fourth main game in the Dead or Alive series; it is the tenth game is be developed. The game was developed by Team Ninja and published by Tecmo in 2005 as an Xbox 360 exclusive.
The game features a story mode which continues the war between the Dead or Alive Tournament Executive Committee and the Mugen Tenshin Ninja clan; it follows Ayane and the story is told in-between fights.
There are six gamemodes open to players; the Story Mode is the only story driven mode. Time Attack and Survival gamemodes are two single player modes; Time Attack requires the player to defeat a number of enemies within a specific time limit while Survival requires the player to survive for as long as possible against waves of enemies.
The Versus and Team Battle modes are very similar, the player can battle AI or local players in these modes however the Versus mode only allows a maximum of two-on-two fights whereas the Team Battle mode allows for up to eight fighters on each side. Tag Battle mode is slightly different, the player can create a two person team to fight another team however only one member of the team can be in the fight at any one time; the player can swap their fighters using tag moves. All of these gamemodes can be played with local multiplayer or online multiplayer.
Players have 22 characters to select from with six being unlockable characters with specific unlock requirements; three of the characters are new to the series. Fighting Arenas have danger zones which can be used to deal extra damage to the opponent
Fighting is the most important aspect in the game and the controls work similar to other fighting games; the player can attack, block, throw and counter the enemy. There is one button for each move and there are some special moves that require multiple buttons being pressed at the same time. Emphasis is placed on countering enemy attacks by pressing guard and the right directional button at the same time; doing this allows the player to perform a powerful counter attack move. When fighting in tag battles it is possible for both character to attack the enemy together when they are switching over.
The player can unlock new costumes for characters by playing the game and completing specific tasks; there are only a small number of costumes for each character.
