The Chronicles of Riddick: Escape from Butcher Bay is a first-person stealth action game that serves as a prequel to the 2004 sci-fi motion picture starring Vin Diesel. The actor reprises his role as Richard B. Riddick for this licensed video game tie-in, where players become Riddick himself as he attempts to escape a maximum security prison known as Butcher Bay.
Players must use their surroundings, as well as Riddick's ability to see in the dark, to ambush over 20 different enemies across over 30 levels. While stealth factors heavily into gameplay, players can defend themselves using 15 types of weapons in first-person shooting and melee combat. Players can also interact with prison residents to accept quests which may provide valuable rewards like tools and weapons.
The game features an immersive HUD which only briefly appears during certain actions like switching weapons and taking damage to showcase the detailed environments which used graphical techniques considered advanced back in 2004.
A remake of the game, called The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena, was released nearly three years after its original release featuring expanded content and a new multiplayer mode.
