Castlevania: Dracula X Chronicles is a PlayStation Portable compilation containing a port of the original PC Engine CD release of Dracula X: Rondo of Blood, its PSP remaster, and a port of Castlevania: Symphony of the Night. The player must first master the updated PSP release of Rondo of Blood, which blends 2.5D graphics with classic side-scrolling gameplay, in order to unlock access to the two ports which retain their original graphics and sound (an important exception is Symphony of the Night featuring new voice acting).
In Rondo of Blood, players become vampire hunter Richter Belmont as he battles the forces of Dracula in the year 1792 across 10 stages in order to defeat the evil vampire and rescue his beloved Annette. Players can also unlock the ability to play as Annette's heroic sister Maria, who is capable of holding her own with her magical powers.
Castlevania: Symphony of the Night meanwhile is the complete PlayStation release that sparked the "Metroidvania" style gameplay which the Castlevania franchise would become known for. Symphony of the Night combines the action of Castlevania with the exploration and unlockable character ability upgrades of Nintendo's classic Metroid series. Players become Dracula's child Alucard himself as he ventures into the dark castle of Castlevania in order to defeat his father.
This game is also known as Akumajou Dracula X Chronicle in Japan.
