Call of Duty: Black ops is the seventh main game in the Call of Duty series; the game is set during the Cold War and the single player story is focused on an experimental chemical weapon called Nova-6. The story is told from the perspective of special forces operative Alex Mason who is being interrogated by an unknown person, some points of the story are told through the perspective of CIA agent Jason Hudson.
It was developed by Treyarch and published by Activision in 2010 for various console platforms; the game is available for the Nintendo Wii, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 and is also available for the Nintendo DS. It was also released for Windows PC amd Mac OS X.
The player controls a soldier who can use a variety of firearms including assault rifles and pistols, however the player can only carry two different weapons at once. Explosives and grenades can also be carried and used by the player, in addition to this the player is equipped with an 'insta-kill knife' that will kill enemies with one hit. The player goes through the game with several friendly AI characters who will help in combat.
There are three stances the player can take in the game to move through the maps; standing crouching and prone. Each of these stances impacts shooting accuracy and also stealth, there is a limited stealth system where the player can sneak up on enemies.
Despite being a first person shooter, there are some points in the game where the player controls a Hind helicopter to guide ally troops as they complete their mission; each mission in the game displays the various objectives on the UI which also directs the player towards the objective.
The zombie mode returns to the series in this game, it allows up to four players in one instance and also allows for solo play; this mode can be played split-screen with local co-op. Two maps are included in the game and more is available through the purchase of map packs, the mode is focused on surviving the oncoming horde of zombies.
The multiplayer is based on team gamemodes such as Team Deathmatch and Capture the Flag however there is also a Deathmatch mode called “Free For All” where there are no teams. There is also the Combat Training mode where players can play alone or with other players against AI enemies. There is an experience points based level system where the player is given rewards for levelling up, experience points are gained by completing matches; there is also character customization where the player can customize and upgrade their weapons.
 What's New
Unlike the previous games in the series, there are only two playable counties with only one campaign which is mostly told from the perspective of Americans. This game added several new features to the series, flashlights can now be used on certain weapons and players are now able to dive-to-prone. Black Ops also introduced speaking player character to the series, in the previous games the main character would remain silent during cutscenes even when 'responding' to the other characters.
The biggest addition to the multiplayer is the Playercard which displays the players progression during the multiplayer and includes their various stats such as kill/death ratio; players can also view the cards of other players on their friendslist or those they have recently seen in games. Players are now able to watch their recent games in the Theater where they also have the ability to spectate the entire map and see the point of view of other players. Finally, CODPoints are also introduced which are used to purchase items to be used in the multiplayer mode.
