[edit] Background

Batman: Arkham Knight is an action-adventure superhero game based on the Batman DC Comics. It is the fourth installment in the Batman: Arkham series and is set during a time when one of his adversaries, Scarescrow, has put plans in motion to destroy the city.

Batman must stop Scarecrow from unleashing his fear toxin to the general populace by using his detective and crime fighting skills to track down where the toxin will be released, where it is being produced and who is carrying out the plan. At the same time, a new enemy rises and Batman must deal with the aftermath of another one of his adversaries which affects him greatly.

[edit] Gameplay

Batman has a wide variety of gadgets at his disposal and more unlock over time as the game progresses; he has access to travel based items such as a grapnel gun, detective gadgets such as the Remote Hacking Device and also gadgets which are used in combat such as he infamous batarangs. His gadgets are upgraded as the game goes on and this game also sees the addition of new items such as the remote control batarang which can be thrown out to view the surrounding information so the player can decide how to deal with the situation.

Gotham City is entirely open to Batman and he can travel anywhere within it's limits. He can also glide with his cape allowing him to travel long distances through the sky and he can use some gadgets while gliding. He can use the grapnel gun to pull himself higher so he can glide further and can use it as a method of quickly switching direction mid-flight. It is possible to glide into combat or glide into an attack move.

Batman often faces various enemies in a single fight and the player is able to manage this with the FreeFlow combat system which allows the player to switch between targets, move constantly while fighting and dodge attacks. Batman can perform combo attacks, counter enemy attacks and dodge even if the attacking enemy is not the target he is locked to. The player can use more stealthy methods by avoiding detection and performing more discrete takedowns of enemies; he can hide above and below enemies using ledges and vents to surprise attack enemies from. It is possible to use weapons in fight and to use the environment to the advantage of the player by using it to injur the enemy.

The game introduces “Fear Takedowns” which allow the player to incapacitate up to five enemies at once however he must remain undetected to do so; making a fear takedown causes time to slow down significantly and gives the player time to focus on the next enemy in the chain.

The city is covered in enemies, watchtowers, aerial drones and more which the player can chose to deal with or leave alone. There are also various side missions the player can choose to pick up which often feature well known characters from the Batman comic universe such as the Riddler who provides 243 optional challenges for the player to solve. Being a detective, Batman can also investigate murders that have occurred all over the city; he uses his gadgets to scan the victim and locate clues.

Players can now drive the Batmobile in the game and can summon it at almost any point in the game; the car is bulletproof and features many abilities such as moving at high speeds, rotating on the spot and can also be used to attack enemy vehicles by firing missiles at them. Batman is not limited when using the Batmobile and he can eject himself from the car to glide around the city or grapple to a roof. The car uses to main modes which are “Pursuit” and “Battle”; Pursuit Mode is the main driving mode which can also be used in driving challenges which are found around the world while the Battle Mode allows the car to move in any direction including strafing and also provides the player with greater weapons access.
