Akira review
Near-Perfection in Anime form

When I first saw AKIRA, it was after reading a lot about how this film was truly revolutionary back in the 1980s upon its Japanese release. When it came out in the USA, I picked it up and watched it, and was totally blown away by it.
For starters, the quality of the animation (by 1980s standards) is fantastic-a lot of attention was paid to detail, right down to the graffiti on the buildings. The characters show great detail for a dark-themed sci-fi flick, and the soundtrack by Geinoh Yamashirogumi (a group of amateur Japanese artists) complements the action while never getting in the way.
The one thing I didn't like about the film was the way the story ended-while the plot is excellent, it does kind of leave you hanging a little bit, wondering what really happened. I would have preferred a definitive ending over what we get.
To me there's not much debate-this is by far the best anime film I've ever seen, and is almost perfect in every way.
