"...it would appear by avoiding going head to head with Nvidia in the high-end market, AMD might actually succeed by bringing value to this generation of mainstream graphics cards for the first time. Those looking at buying a sub $300 US graphics card should still turn to the GeForce 8800 GT, while those looking at spending anything less than $200 US should consider the Radeon HD 3850, no actually they should only consider the Radeon HD 3850! For far too long the performance difference between the mainstream ($200 US) and the high-end ($300 US+) graphics cards has been way too significant. With the Radeon HD 3850 finally bridging that gap, it is now possible to build high-performance affordable gaming systems!"
"Right now for the MSRP of $189, a 3870 is an excellent value for the consumer wanting high-end performance but not wanting to spend the money. Todays $200 video card was yesterdays high-end card and the performance and features of the GIGABYTE HD3870 based card are amazing for the price."
"In the end, the Gigabyte HD 3870 is a good card, and it is a good deal to be had at around $200, but competition is so tight around this mark -- especially now with the release of the 9600GT -- that this card doesn't really have that certain something that would make it stand out from the rest of the pack."
"Gigabyte has been offering their own take on various ATI and NVIDIA cards, by adding custom GPU cooling solutions, adjustable voltages, and Ultra Durable 2 components. The Gigabyte Radeon HD 3870 has its positives and negatives, such as lightweight design, high stability and low GPU temperatures, but without a variable speed fan or heat exhaust. The GV-RX387512H is still not a radical departure, and it runs perfectly with standard Catalyst drivers and fully supports OverDrive and PowerPlay features. Overall, the card offers very competitive performance in its class, and provides mainstream performance users with an economical gaming solution."
"The only real problem we can see with the card is at the moment the 3870 has the jump on the 8800GT in the price department. Its a little bit cheaper than the 8800GT and its a little bit slower most of the time. If the price premium on the GIGABYTE is too great and puts us into 8800GT territory then its going to be hard to buy the card from a performance perspective.
With that said though, if youre running a smaller box then you dont want something that draws so much power and heats things up considerably. If youre simply after a performance card that is extremely quiet then this could be the card to get."
