"AMD has made the 790FX chipset their high-end chipset and as such, the Gigabyte MA-790FX-DS5 is designed to work with the newest Phenom B3 CPUs. Gigabyte has done an outstanding job outfitting this card with the features that you need and the performance to boot. The inclusion of features like 8 SATA ports and 2 Firewire ports make this board ideal for the HT enthusiast needing those features. If you are looking for a motherboard to run the latest Phenom X4 B3 CPU this is it. The negatives of this board are few but include the lack of four video card slots for four-way Crossfire and the mediocre overclocking options. Make sure you use the latest version of the BIOS as the BIOS that came with the board, F3 does not support the latest Triple Core 8750 CPUs and had issues with the 9850 we use for testing our motherboard test platform with that BIOS as well. Updating the BIOS to the F6 version fixed the issues. Not a big thing, but it is important to be aware that if you want to use those CPUs an updated BIOS may be necessary before the board recognizes the new CPUs."
"...there are a few drawback as well. One of the memory slots - possibly two - will be blocked if you use oversize coolers. And the current 65nm Phenom limits its overclocking capabilities and memory bandwidth - I am sure the board is capable of more. The package is also a bit light on SATA cables - but that's nitpicking. Basically, the Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 is a good board for both business and gaming use - the benchmark results clearly showed that. Selling at approximately $200, it is a good value, and lets you overclock power hungry Phenoms without a great risk of frying VRM's."
"After playing with the MA790FX-DS5 for a while, I was thoroughly impressed with the stability and the ease of overclocking the board has to offer. The high quality components and the layout of the board are second to none. The 790FX chipset is coming into maturity and will only get better with time. AMD users will have an excellent upgrade path if they choose to ride out the current storm with the X2 and Phenom CPUs currently lagging behind Intel's offerings. With the pricing for AMD/ATi components currently very attractive and affordable, the choice is simple to continue the AMD path if you are willing to sacrifice a little speed to enjoy some more green in your wallet, and still stay competitive and utilize today's technology."
"We really like the Gigabyte GA-MA790FX-DS5 motherboard and the AMD 780FX chipset that powers it. This is as good as you can get for a high-end Phenom X4 platform, as it offers a nice combination of excellent performance and a great feature set. There are some layout concerns, but that's the same for any motherboard, and Gigabyte has also been quick with the BIOS updates, ensuring full support for any new AMD processors. A quality product mixed with solid support is a killer combination, and Gigabyte continues to impress with its latest motherboards."
