Dell SmartStep 250N User ReviewsPC

5.0

Not too terrible

The good:

It has a great screen, a wonderful keyboard and it is pretty fast and reasonably priced.

The bad:

The chip that was put into the SmartStep is a standard Pentium 4 chip and as a result it overheats continually when running large loads such as games, when the chip overheats, it either shuts down the system or it just locks up. This can be very frustrating.

Summary:

I really like this computer however the shutting down has got to end. I recently found a fix for this problem solved by someone on the internet (I think it is out of France) but he posted a very helpful fix to this problem. Unfortunately, use it only if you are skilled with computers, it is pretty technical and it will require taking out your CPU and thermal plate therin. His website is http://seb.closs.free.fr/articles/tutoP4_en.php I hope this is helpful.

Dell Smartstep 250N

The good:

It came when ordered. When it is not crashing it performs OK. Looks good in an advertisement when you are spending your money.

The bad:

Any demanding operation where the CPU maxs out the @#$% crashes losing anything you have done. I have found setting it on a bag of ice helps sometimes. Dell was able to fix nothing although the design is clearly flawed without sufficient cooling to handle the encompassed machinery.

Summary:

Dell service does not admit the problem inspite of the fact that there are hundreds of complaints published on the web. The last Dell I will ever buy!

Overheats and shutsdown

The good:

Good when it works.

The bad:

Runs extremely hot, shuts down within 45 mins due to overheating.

Summary:

Dell has been no help. Warranty is now up and it will cost over $1200 to fix. Still owe $1800 on it. Its now an expensive paper weight that is still costing me money.

Everyone, lets start a petition. If there ever was a computer that needed a re-call.. It would be this one.

Worse Product Purchased from Dell

The good:

The comments are consistent with all of the general forum and review comments. The laptop has a large screen, nice keyboard, every type of port, and it has all of the graphics and storage space for my specific use which is college. It has all of the "bells and whistles" - great if it did not shut down.

The bad:

The laptop would be worth its weight in gold if it actually allowed me to utilize the features without shutting down. It is a problem when I am in the middle of working on a project and it shuts down for no reason. This situation cost me time since I had projects that were due and I would have to use someone else's computer to complete the projects. Would not recommend - it is a great laptop when it is not shutting down.

Summary:

I have tried to send the machine back and my parents, wanted to see if it was possible to repair, because I needed the laptop while attending school in Boston. However, it was impossible, so they purchased another laptop in anticipation that the Dell reps and techs could repair the laptop. Unfortuantely, we received the same treatment no response and if we got a response it was someone from one of the outsource centers. We have found this to be extremely frustratings, since my parents have purchased desktops and laptops from them and all have been exceptional with the exception of this p...

The good:

can't thnk about it

The bad:

shut down by itself..... overheat..

Summary:

I want to cry out when the problem repeats again and again. I sent it back to Dell once and it seemed to be ok for 2 months and then occured again until now. I have tried to call Dell but they could never respond me. I don't know what to do now....so upset. I will never buy any Dell product again.
