To get an extra life instantly, hold C and press start at the start screen, then go to the main game, pause the game and press X.
To gain one medal instantly (10 medals will earn you a continue), hold C and press start at the start screen, then go to the main game, pause the game and press Y.
To get all of the Chaos Emeralds instantly, hold C and press start at the start screen, then go to the main game, pause the game and press Z.
