In case you are robbed early in the game and you haven't had a chance to buy alarms, when you see a man in dark clothing sneaking slowly down the street, quickly wake up your sims and get them to call the police. If you catch him, the police will come, you will be rewarded for catching him and get any things that were taken back.

When starting a new home, buy a bookshelf and sit your sims down to read some cooking books.
Build up their cooking skills as much as possible, otherwise they will make bad tasting food which will not satisfy there hunger, and they may burn the house down.

Never be Robbed Again
Want a fail-proof system to keep burglars away from your house? Use what I've dubbed "burglar alarm posts"! Go into build mode and build a wall right up against the sidewalk at both ends of your property. Then head to buy mode and put a burglar alarm on each of the posts. The police show up before those crooks even get to the front door.
If you're on one of those corner lots and you have four entrances, you have three options. The first one, and the only one that doesn't requrie the cheat box, is to put a burglar alarm post by the place in the sidewalk where the four paths cross, though depending on the house it may not work before he robs you (though the policewoman will show up before he gets away). Another way is to use the "move_objects on" cheat and build a burglar alarm post by each entrance beyond your property lines. Or with the same cheat, in buy mode you can click on the end of the sidewalk where the visitors appear and you'll pick up something called "*portal-pedestrian". Delete it and no burglars (or anyone else for that matter) can come in from that place. As you can't get those portals back, I don't recommend that method, or at least not on any more than the odd-placed sidewalks.

If you miss two days you will be fired.

Move stuff like the cars etc / Naked sims
To move stuff go into the cheat box and type move_objects on then go into buy mode and you will be able to select cars the mailbox even the sim (you can refill your mood bars by deleting your sim then click on his/her picture in live mode to bring them back with full mood bars)
Never be late for school/work again!!!
To never be late for a carpool or school again, do the following when a school bus or car comes to pick a member of your family up. Quickly activate the move_objects on code and pick up the garbage/can mailbox. Put the item in front of the vehicle. Remove it when you're ready.

Quickly Learn Skills
When you start making your adult Sim, you just have to do this for a little amount of extra skills.
- First just fill in a name for your Sim, a personality and a bio if you prefer, but do NOT make an adult already. Just make a kid, so if you want to have a woman make a girl and if you want to make a man make a boy. You do not have to pick out clothes and stuff.
- Then press the 'Done' button, so you see the head of your created Sim.
- Press the 'Edit' button. You'll go back to the Edit menu.
- Now you make an adult of your kid, Choose the wanted clothes, face; your wanted Sim. Press 'Done' again and in the menu screen (when you're ready, you can also make some other Sims) press 'Done' again. So if you'll move your Sim into a house, he/she will have some Skills already!

Roaches are worth gold!
I don't know if you've noticed this, but when the bathroom or sink, or some other thing needs cleaning, roaches will appear on the floor. If you let them be a couple days, then type "move_objects on" in the cheat window, then go to buy mode, you can resell this patch of roaches for up to 498 simleons! Isn't that wonderfu?

When adding an extra level to your house, the cheapest thing to do is choose cheap steps, then use cheap carpet.

Tips for new home buyers
When first building a house, choose good solid foundations and make a big house, but but the cheapest beds, toilets, showers, lamps, pictures etc.
Then, once you get more money sell you old crappy stuff and buy new top-of-the-range things. This way, you don't waste all your money at the start of the game, but soon you can live it up in style.

When the social worker comes to take your kid...
Ya know when you are working all hard to get the baby to grow up and that annoying message say you're neglecting the child? Well, when this happens and you see the social worker, QUICKLY pause the game and delete ALL the doors. This will result in with a new baby in the place of the old one and a box asking what you wish to name the baby.
