THE GOOD:
The realism is, well, very realistic, and it's Xbox Live compatible! Plus, the Franchise mode is very deep.

THE BAD:
It just isn't fun to play.

SUMMARY:
When I heard this game was Xbox Live compatible, I knew I had to get it. After playing it for a while, I can honestly say I was very disappointed.

The first thing I noticed was the neat, ESPN interface. A very cool addition to this game. Unfortunately, that is about as good as it gets in terms of appearance. The graphics are horrible, and are embarrassing in comparison to the other Sega sports games out there.

When trying to go online, I was often disconnected from the game because it had lost network synchronization. I had never experienced this problem in any other game I have played, so I was very surprised when it happened almost every time I started a game in this one. Not many people own this game either, so finding a game can be extremely difficult. The rosters are never updated, and it shows.

I could have put all of this aside if the game was fun. Unfortunately, it's not. Scoring is impossible, and at times I thought it was too realistic. I bought this game because I wanted to get away from the EA sports “style,” but now I just want it back. A 2.4 is generous for this game, and I don't think I can recommend it to anyone unless they really like hockey games and have a personal vendetta against EA.

THE GOOD:
Gameplay
Sim style
Xbox Live

THE BAD:
Minor Flaws

SUMMARY:
This is the best hockey game on the market right now. Much better than EA's NHL 2003. EA's hockey version is more of an arcade style game. While NHL 2K3 is a sim game.
The controls are very slick and fluid with great action surrounding your player. The AI on your team plus the opposite team is terrific. Its not easy to gain the zone and try to bust threw the "D", this always makes for a challenge. The configuration and customization is beyond many expectations. You have the ablitity to change just about every thing you want. The AI's skill in each zone, puck friction, rebounds etc. Another bonus is the fact that NHL 2K3 is online playable, only for Xbox though. It is very fun playing against someone you have no idea who there are. Meanwhile trash talking them while you score on a wicked slapshot from the point.
There are some minor flaws in the game. The poke check becomes frustrating at times. Always having the puck roll of your stick after you are poke checked. The presentation isnt that great, the commentary wears thin at times as well.
This NHL game is a step below the greatest hockey game of all-time, NHL '94 for Sega Genesis. Get this if you're a hockey fan because it is well worth it. Stay away from the other hockey games like NHL 2003, NHL Hitz and NHL Gameday.
