THE GOOD: Superb graphics Good new weapons and monsters Nice challenge near end Classic DoomTHE BAD: Not too long Multiplayer ain't great SUMMARY: Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is a port of an expansion pack for Doom 3 on PC. Now that we all know that Doom 3 for the Xbox was surprisingly good, Doom 3 : Resurrection of Evil needs to keep it up. Thankfully enough, it has.
In Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil you once a again play as a nameless, voiceless, nobody space marine and him and his squad were investigating down in some ruins. As they were looking around, the came across the strange artefact, which is this strange heart.....thing and when the nobody space marine touches it, everybody dies and once demons are on loose and it's your job to kill them and take this artefact back to Dr. McNeil who helps you on way.
Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil doesn't actually too differently than Doom 3. You run into rooms, kill demons, pick up ammo and health supplies and proceed forward. While this just sounds dull and boring the game does feature great battles and enough varied environments to keep you playing until the end. The game makes you want to conserve your ammo as this is where your enemies don't drop ammo everytime they get killed. Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is very dark game, once again. You will need to rely on your torch all of time and you will need to switch between your torch and your powerful weapons regularly, At least the torch is attached to a gun this time round but it is only for the simple pistol that you start of with. But least you can have a weapon and your torch out at the same time. In terms of weapons, all of the weapons from the original Doom 3 like the machine gun and the rocket launcher are in here apart the chainsaw and the Soul Cube. There are three new weapons. First is your double-barrelled shotgun which can take down a lot of your foes in a single blast and will remind old Doom fan of the double-barrelled shotgun found in Doom II. Second is The Grabber and this is a very interesting weapon. If you have ever used The Gravity gun found in Valve Software's Half-Life 2, then you know what to expect. You can use this to hurl boxes at incoming zombies or with enemies that like throwing fireballs at you, you can use The Grabber to grab these fireballs back at the enemy. Very satisfying to say the least. Finally, The Artefact which started this chaos can be used as a weapon. Well, not really. It is more of a powerup weapon rather proper weapon which fire projectiles at enemies. You get more artefact abilities as the game progresses. One let's you slow down time, one let's you have Berserk power which is like a one shot kill and last but not least invulnerability which very obviously has you invincible for a short period of time.
As for the graphics the game looks absolutely stellar. The monsters, environments, lighting effects, animation everything looks nothing short of fantastic. Light and dark is done incredibly well in this game. When it is dark it is very dark and this just adds to the creepy atmosphere which suits a game like this. Everything looks as good as the PC version which looks superb too.
The sound is also very, very well done. The guns have a punch to them, the monsters sound pretty cool, the voice-acting is not bad and everything sounds just great. In term of music there is none unless you count the “rocking” music in the introduction. In menu screens you will hear things like screams, creepy monster noises and things of that nature.
One terms of length, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil isn’t very long and is notably is a lot shorter than original. It will take around ten hours but id Software have put in extra game modes to expand the game’s length. These are faithful translations of The Ultimate Doom, Doom II and The Doom II Master Levels. These are pretty good ports but it can be strange play the game with the twin analogue sticks as thes games where originally made for the PC and they used the arrows keys to move around. You can get many hours of gameplay out of these classic games but newer gamers to the Doom series will probably not care and Classic Doom Gamers have probably completed these game to many time already. But sure, if these are classic and they have multiplayer mode like co-op and deathmatch for up to four-players on split-screen. Speaking of multplayer, the multiplayer in the actual Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is pretty disappointing. The brilliant co-op play from Doom 3 is missing here and the deathmatch is just exactly the same. You also can’t play in the same console; you have to play through Xbox Live or System Link if you have a bunch of Xboxes and TVs lying around. So if you looking for a good multiplayer shooter, You should buy another first-person shooter like Halo 2 or Unreal Tournament: The Liandri Conflict.
But even still, Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil is still a very good game with a great single-player mode and the inclusion of the Classic Doom game from ten years ago and cool additions. Just don’t expect the best multiplayer game ever released. Great value for the price. |
