THE GOOD: Gauntlet for the Xbox! A new Inventory system means you can choose where and when to use magic items you pick up. Over 60 well designed, massive levels broken up into different areas which must be unlocked by collecting coloured crystals. Each area contains about 6 levels which can be done in any order. Extra unlockable characters including Minataur and Medusa. You can level up your character on your own then load it into a multiplayer game and play with upto 3 friends. The Gauntlet voice remains "Blue Wizard is about to die!" GREAT. The inclusion of the "Robotron" control system is also a real plus. I'd love to see this control method (which uses one stick for movement direction and one for fireing direction) implemented in more games. Firing your arrows at a boss while dodging backwards and sidewaws, GREAT FUN. Make sure you have auto aim turned off during play as a trained chimp could complete the game with this feature enabled.
THE BAD: The graphice on the Dreamcast's Gauntlet Legends were equal if not better. THE most annoying thing about this game occurs during multiplayer action. To keep all players visible onscreen the camera zooms in and out. This is a good solution but poorly implemented. Not enough space is left between the character and the edge of the screen, so you can't see what is attacking you, or indeed if you are destroying valuable items offscreen. Then there is the preprogrammed rotation of the camera around the characters. This is an attempt to prevent the scenary obstructing the view but can end up causing an obstruction. Some of the camera movements don't seem to take into account that you may want to quickly go back (the camera won't rotate back) leaving you hidden behind the very scenary this trick was trying to avoid.
SUMMARY: This game could have been so much better with just a few minor tweaks.
1.) More space left between the players and the edge of the screen. Further zoom out.
2.)Player controlled rotation of the camera. Or at least more intelligent computer control.
3.)The Xbox is capable of producing graphics 10 times better than this!
I'm an RPG fanatic. This isn't an RPG which I did know when I bought it. This is however great fun, pick up and put down multiplayer action. If your looking for a solo adventure, look elsewhere. If you have friends to play with, buy this game.
