Better than my Computer! | 3.0 0 comments |
by iamjoe56 from kansas city, KS, USA | Dec 15, 2007 |
THE GOOD: It looks cool. It supports the best graphics I have seen. The sound is earth shaking and clear. The controller was a snap to adapt to. Support Music and DVD, plus with my HDD I can laod in my music!THE BAD: It runs a bit loud. The Power brick is huge. Hardware is pricey as hell, Wireless network adapter=$100. What the Hell? SUMMARY: This console is awe inspiring, it has a sleek tower and it blends into most any room. It is not as loud as some claim, but that is aside the point.
To get down to business, I am a game cube owner, my parents bought it, and I have been stuck with it for several years. Until just recently, this week, on Monday I brought home my Xbox. I plugged it in, and was blown away. First I want to talk about the sound. In this regard, this system DELIVERS. It has some of the cleanest and most crisp sound I have experienced on a console. Each gunshot in my copy of GRAW2 Rings out and never gets fuzzy. The accompany this great sound, are visuals that are equally amazing. Again, using my copy of GRAW2, the visuals come onto the screen clear, clean and fluid. I have not experienced even a hiccup on the screen for any game that I have played.
The controller is very easy to use, and was a snap to adapt to, it also allows much for interaction with the console. Things like the Xbox menu [which can be called up in-game] and the Dashboard are fluid and easy to use. The controller even turns the console on! [The wireless ones anyway] The blades all fit together well, and the functionality in each is impressive. Also the ability to set up profiles is a great help, as you can also designate which profile can have access to what things, I.E. Games, movies, and music. Another great thing about this console, I can load up one of my Disturbed Cds, and play it in the background as I run around in GRAW2 or any other game I wish. That all makes for a great gaming experience. Couple this with the fact that the 360 has a huge library and a large amount of superb titles, this machine is one of the best buys in the console arena.
All in all, this system is worth the money, it also delivers so many features that just make it better. Like loading music into your HDD and then playing it while in-game. So in my Opinion, this console scores a perfect 5/5. My only complaints are that the power brick is huge, and that some accessories are pretty pricey. Controllers are $40 [USD] minimum, and things like headsets, HDDs, wireless network adapters and the HD DVD drive. Are pretty pricey, all of them over $100 [USD] Excluding the headset. But none of this should make anyone NOT buy this system. even if the add-ons are a bit 'spensive, it is forgivable.

THE GOOD: Xbox Live--Fun, interactive, lots of features, marketplace is where it's at. Xbox Live Arcade--Street Fighter, Hexic, Billiards, and more. Large library of games so there's bound to be something that's you'll like. Fairly inexpensive for all it's gotTHE BAD: No built in Wifi. Can overheat easily if not ventilated properly. Seperate HD-DVD drive SUMMARY: The Xbox 360 has been around for about 2 years now and started off way ahead of its competition. Today, it's still having a good run. Despite all the complaints and cold remarks about its hardware problems and the dreaded "Red Ring of Death," this is truly an amazing machine.
Setup:
The setup is easy to follow and doesn't take long at all, unless you need a parent to help you and have to drag them over to fill some stuff out. Registering your system is fast and easy, and will ensure good customer service if anything goes wrong with your system.
The Xbox 360 Dashboard:
Flexible, user-friendly, and visually pleasing. You can customize the dashboard by changing the background using your own uploaded pictures, or the theme which is preloaded on your console. Themes can be customized as well, and more can be found online in the Xbox Live Marketplace. You can easily access your videos, music, pictures, and other multimedia things on the dashboard from your hard drive, computer (if you are connected to a network) or other portable devices (iPod, Zune, flash drives, external hard drives, etc..). You can also rip music from a CD straight to your hard drive. If you have your Xbox 360 connected to your PC through a network, you can access Windows Media Center from the dashboard and exchange multimedia between your PC and Xbox 360. However, your computer must have Media Center installed on it for this feature to work. You can go to the Xbox Arcade and play fun arcade games.
Xbox Live:
Probably the main feature that makes this console popular is Xbox Live. There are so many things to do in Xbox Live. To set up a gamertag is easy to follow and a quick process. Once you have created a gamertag, or recovered an old one you had playing on the original Xbox, you can change your gamerpic, edit your motto, and choose your gamerzone. The community is very large, so at any time of the day there's bound to be a lot of people online. You can go to the Xbox Live Marketplace and download game add-ons, demos, full arcade games, movies, trialers, full movies in HD, and much more. The options are almost endless. Also, with a new update coming up soon, you will be able to download original Xbox games from Marketplace.
The Controller:
The controller is a MAJOR step up from the original Xbox controller. It's smooth and fits in your hand very nicely. The design is very nice, and the battery life is good.
The Conclusion:
The Xbox 360 is an amazing machine, and don't be intimidated by the bad remarks it has been given, mostly due to the RROD. It's a powerful machine that is fairly inexpensive and is sure to give you a very enjoyable gaming experience. |

Almost Next Gen | 2.5 0 comments |

THE GOOD: ~ Xbox Live. ~ Xbox Live Arcade. ~ Some exclusive titles.THE BAD: ~ Reliability. ~ Limitations. ~ Hardware issues. SUMMARY: I'd just like to state before I start this review [As I will with all my console reviews] that I own each of the 3 next gen consoles, so I'm not bias in any way.
For starters, the 360 was first out of the blocks in the console race. It enjoyed a lucrative year bringing us titles like the life consuming Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion and arguably the best third person shooter around in Gears of War. Add into the mix their award worthy online system with Xbox Live and you've got what seemed to be a pretty much unstoppable gaming machine.
Before I go into the bad, we'll look at the good. Xbox Live is a brilliantly easy online system, accessible with an internet connection and for only €60/$40 a year you can have unlimited access to online gaming and all sorts of other features depending on what part of the world you live in.
The Xbox Live Arcade I have to admit, is the best thing about this console. For a few dollars you can buy some of your old favourites. Some revamped - Jetpack - some in HD - Worms - and some just they way they were - Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles. All of them though hold new achievements to gain, adding to your rep and score as a gamer that you show off to the world on your gamer card.
Cue the problems. From the gamer's side of the fence, it looks like the 360 was a rush job. Microsoft pushed and pushed for the 360 to be released a year before the competition, causing it all kinds of fatal flaws. The Cooling fan being in the wrong place for one. The console being primarily plastic for another. A cooling fan that doesn't work properly and a plastic console can only lead to one thing - heat and warping. A common problem that can - and most likely will strike each and every gamer at some stage in their 360's life. The 360 heats, the heat has nowhere to go because the fan isn't placed properly and the motherboard warps. Hence causing the dreaded Read Ring of Death, or RRoD. Meaning your 360's display shows 3 red lights, the signal which means your 360, for whatever hardware reasons, is beyond repair.
The 360 is also burdened with the lack of a HD-DVD drive, so it's stuck in the past with DVD format disks, meaning it has sub-par storage capabilities in this 'next gen world' we're in now.
So, from me, the outlook is grim. In terms of the future, the 360's isn't looking bright and unless Microsoft has something massive up their sleeves, I think the 360 is going to slink into the background as another one of the lesser consoles in the pages of history. |

THE GOOD: Xbox Live Dashboard is very deep and easy to use Graphics and sound are awesome! King of the Online play: period. The best control I've ever used Small and durable Silent Sleek and sexy!THE BAD:
The power brick and cords. DVD-9 will be a problem in the future The fact that the hard drive is detachable ruins it for those of us who have one Why can't I play my Madden games with the BC?!SUMMARY: You need to hand it to Microsoft. They came into the gaming world with no knowledge. Into a world ruled by Sony. And they almost went the way of the Dreamcast. However, thanks to Halo and some more better games, they hung in there. Now they are back, and better than ever! In almost every way, they fixed what was wrong with the Xbox and made the things that were good about it better. So how did they do? Find out.
The console itself has a white base color, giving it a simplistic look that works. It is also much smaller than the original Xbox. Though the 360 is sexy and good looking enough to eat, there is one problem: the cords are freakin' huge! Ever heard of the "power brick"? The power brick is the power adapter for the 360 that has the size and actual weight of a brick. And not just the power cord but all the cords are freakin' huge. Though the 360 is indeed smaller, the cords get in the way a lot.
However, the huge cords means that the system itself is great! Right? You bet your ass it is! The 360 comes with a 3 core processor, each working at 3.2Ghz. Top of the line people. Everything else is top of the line too: memory, graphics card, good amount of RAM. The works. The outcome? Beautiful graphics are produced and we have yet to reach the full potential of the 360. It's just warming up.
What makes the 360 truly shine is what made it shine before: Xbox Live. You know how I said they fixed all the bad and improved the good? Well the Xbox Live has improved by a great amount. You can go to the marketplace and purchase downloads for your dashboard, you can download trailers and demos, and you can even buy games from the Arcade! Granted, these games are as huge as regular games, but they are just as good and fun to do when there are no games out right. All sorts of games can be purchased from old school games Gauntlet to brand spankin' new games like Geometry Wars (my favorite). However, there is more to it than that! Yes, there is. You know what I can do? I can watch Anchorman on DVD and chat with my friend, who is playing Call of Duty 2 at the moment. The list can go on what Xbox Live has and it is still expanding!
Finally, there is the controller. If you remember the frankenstein of controls, you'll remember the first Xbox controller. That thing was uncomfortable, heavy, and big as hell, earning the title as worst controller ever. However, the 360 has changed and now has earned the title as the best controller ever! What did Microsoft do? They took the Type S controller, made it smaller, turned the Black and White buttons into two triggers, which get rid of the need to reach. It feels so very light and at the same time it feels so very stronger and sturdy. The wireless feature also gives you great control and eliminates cords for good. The battery life lasts a damn long time too. This controller rocks, hands down.
So the Xbox 360 rocks. It excels in so many areas that the Xbox didn't. However, there are some negatives to this console. The decision to not use HD-DVD format makes game storage on disks smaller. Also, the decision to have the developers develop games on the fact that everyone may not has a hard drive kills it for the rest of us. Besides those things, the Xbox 360 is an awesome machine that is to not be passed up. |

THE GOOD: As good as it gets(at least for now) in console gaming Flexible and Upgradable operating unit. Top quality graphics and sound Awesome features. Voice Chat with anyone while doing anything over the XBOX 360 whether it's watching a movie, playing a game or listening to music. XBOX Live Marketplace and Arcade makes the console a much more fun console in itself to use. Great accessories. Plug and play/w wireless controller, etc. Very user friendly Dashboard interface. Excellent gamesTHE BAD:
The Mic sucks. Voice quality is very poor compared to its predecessor. The Backwards compatibility system sucks.SUMMARY: It's one of the most if not THE most anticipated item ever in history. It produced campout lines of longing gamers both through 2nd and 3rd shipment across retailers everywhere. This is the XBOX 360.
It's the first console to come standard with the latest in digital Component Cables. Which have upped the graphics in games significantly. Taking gaming into the next generation. With much more potential than it's ancestor and muscle of the last generation, the XBOX, the graphics are expected to exceed by far, which it has. The resolution potential is much greater. You can now see detail which is much more sharp.
The games are as realistic as they come. With a more powerful graphics processor you can see it in the color and light and swear you'll half-think it's real.
The backwards compatibility works fine but is a very horrid implementation. They should have just had a totally separate emulator just for the XBOX instead. Just like PS1's was on the PS2. The whole trying to literally enable games to work while still on an XBOX360 emulator makes no sense and just really makes things more hard on us. Thing is quite sloppy too. Sometimes slows down the unit and sometimes not all features are available like some XBOX games work but not it's XBOX Live capabilities. And we need to wait for some games to become available. Screw that! Honestly if you still have an XBOX, play your XBOX games on that rather than the 360.
The mic also really sucks. The voice quality is really poor. Sometimes when its messaging in XBOX games, people can't even hear you at all.
The Dashboard chat is a nifty feature. You can talk with one other person over XBOX Live while dowing anything as long as your XBOX360 is on and you are logged online. What really sucks is it's only one on one chats. No more party-sized chats like the XBOX Dashboard. However that could change overtime since it is fully upgrdable.
The marketplace and XBOX Live arcade is solid enough to add to this console's value. Features some rather fun downloadable games to play and some features to decorate your XBOX360 dashboard and your profile with. Also a much much more convenient place to download demos and play them right away. More convenient than ever before. Great way to take games you might be interested for a spin.
Accessories are top quality too. An unmatched quality controller that kinda reminds me of the Deamcast controller which BTW was my favorite controller ever. All the buttons are positioned perfectly this time. The wireless and plug and play feature makes the experience much more convenient now.
The Operating System is more flexible this time which makes the conole allow itself to self improve overtime. First of which will be a Camera feature to be added.
The games for the XBOX360 aren't much now but you've got games like Call of Duty 2, Perfect Dark Zero and Project Gotham Racing which squeeze in a pretty good amount demonstration of what the console is truly capable of. And you can bet you'll all be seeing more of that. All that being just the infant generation of games, you can imagine the quality of the games that are going to come out of the XBOX360 in the coming years.
The Achievement Point system is another ingenious system they added. No sure they seem like just points. But as always ranks/points/etc always a provokative factor to games. I found myself motivated to complete my games more with this points system.
If you have an HDTV and a surround sound system, the XBOX360 should give them a pretty good workout. You haven't experienced your HDTV and Digital Surround sound system to it's fullest potential until you let them take on the XBOX360. |
