As Nero, players will continue to utilize "stylish combat" to defeat demonic enemies and bosses using the sword Red Queen and revolver Blue Rose. Nero also has access to the Devil Bringer, a demonic arm that players can use to perform context-sensitive throwing and pulling commands even during the heat of combat. Just as in previous games, defeating enemies is only half the fun; defeating them in such a way as to score the maximum Style Ranks (from Deadly all the way to Smokin' Sick Style) is the real challenge!
As players progress through the story through mission structure, they will also control series main character Dante as he wages his own battles against demonic hordes. Eventually players will discover how the fates (and paths) of Nero and Dante intertwine.
Devil May Cry 4 was the first title in the series developed specifically for gaming hardware succeeding the PlayStation 2, namely the PS3. The development team had the additional challenge of producing the Xbox 360 and PC versions alongside it, but this also provided them the opportunity to introduce Nero as the new main character along with his unique abilities.
