Crossover are often hard to pull off. Remember the unbelievably bad Freddy vs. Jason? And that spin-off didn't even get an obligatory game tie-in! But there's something about pitting face-biting aliens against space bounty hunters that works; the latest entry in the long-running Aliens vs. Predator series comes from Rebellion Studios, creators of the 1999 PC classic of the same name. During a recent multiplayer demo at Sega, I got to try out the new Aliens vs. Predator's fast-paced combat firsthand.
As is usually the case, AVP lets you take the role of an Alien, Predator, or Marine in a world where everything is trying to kill you. As a Predator, you have the classic "disc-blade" projectile weapon that, after you lock onto your opponent, can destroy them in one hit. But your weapons don't have unlimited energy; you have to use charge stations littered throughout each level to stay powered up. Fortunately, your invisibility mode doesn't drain any power -- once you're cloaked, you can stay hidden indefinitely. And of course, with Predators being far stronger than humans, they can easily leap to out-of-the way platforms and use their helmet's different visors to see either Marine or Alien enemies through walls.
HANDS-ON: Xenomorph, hunter and human taken for a brutal deathmatch test drive. ...
