THE GOOD: Animation and gameplay is very good. The best is special effects, especially at the super powers.THE BAD: While you are watching FMVs,sometimes game freezes. Also, character speed is so slow.Another thing is,there are only 10 characters. SUMMARY: Characters in X-Men are fighting in this game, arcade style,of course. Each character has got own powers and own attacks.
There are 10 characters at this game:Cyclops,Storm,Gambit,Phoenix(basically Jean Grey),Wolverine,Beast,Toad,Sabretooth,Mystique and Magneto. You can train with them at Academy, for learn they skills.
Also, there is Cerebro-database that collects all information about characters. You can watch FMVs there, check costumes and see all them records.
You will like this game, but I prefer wait for its second game. |

by Freak 2345 from , ON, Canada | Dec 24, 2004 |
THE GOOD: the graphics are ok,the sound effects are well done, also, the characters are cool enough because you are used to them, you get kind of a story mode, the cut-scenes are cool also, theres lots of modes and finally you can collect lots of extras like costumes and original comic books!THE BAD: this game is very repititive you just fight, some of the voice-overs suck(toads is the worst),some modes are boring(like academy mode) and finally it's just another fighting game. SUMMARY: Hey guys and girls! Heres another "retro review" Today i have Xmen:Mutant Academy. This game is pretty much average in every aspect. The graphics are ok and you get lots of extas( and when i say lots i mean LOTS!!).But some of the voice-overs are really bad especially Toads! Overall if you are a fan of the x-men i would recomend it but at the end of the day it's just another fighting game with the x-men license.
Grade:B-

The best PSX fighting game next to the sequel to this game! | 4.9 0 comments |
by Winged Dragon of Ra from Flume, , Second Earth | Apr 10, 2004 |
THE GOOD: Man, the levels, the characters super, special, and x-treme attacks. their attacks are way off the chart! there are difficulties to select from. there is the 2 player mode, the survival mode, and also, the original yet simple, arcade and training mode. there is always a time to inprove, and the one cheat is the best!THE BAD: A bit, only a slight off, the graphics, and the number of characters SUMMARY: Jean, Wolverine, Cyclops, Storm, Beast, and Gambit, you care my 6 best students, and do you best. by the way, destroy the mutant brotherhood for me, will you? and if your skills are not that good, go to the academy mode for practice
Toad, Mystique, and you, sabertooth, are going to join I, to conquer the world with our powers. but first, we must destroy our enemies and then proceed to prove yourselfs. the survival mode, i suggest, is the best to gain practice. |

The incomplete Arcade fighter | 3.0 0 comments |
by lkjhgfdsa from Marneri, Argonath, IANTA | Oct 8, 2003 |
THE GOOD: This game really includes alot of neat characters from the old X-men cartoon I used to watch as a little kid. I love it because it takes me back to the old days of Macaroni and Cheese, and Cheetos. There's lots of moves in the game that were used alot in the cartoons...But sadly for anyone that doesn't like remembering the good old days, or simply wasn't around back then, this game just doesn't have anywhere near enough good stuff.THE BAD: The game is extremely 2-d, to the point where I wonder if this game was actually built for an older system, but when the PS1 came out, they simply put the program in a CD (without editing it) and just threw it into the mix. The fighting is hard, and not very enjoyable, since you're limited to very few moves, not matter who you chose to play as. The arenas you fight in are all extremely small and cramped, meaning anyone who's claustrophobic will have a heck of time with this one. And then there's the lack of story, and voice acting, leaving us with next to no game at all. SUMMARY: All in all it isn't the glorious arcade fighter that I would've loved to see. Aside from the same great characters, and their old fashioned attack moves, this game has nothing to be proud of. We'll always have the old days...Here's looking at you kid. |

THE GOOD: With great graphics, superb moves and grear throws and flings.THE BAD: Well, nothing much, save that sometimes, the opponents really make you angry. SUMMARY: This game consists of great graphics with superb moves and throws. A lot of fun to play with friends and family. Go to Academy Mode to learn your moves and try out other characters to find out the best mutant in you. I think both Action and Xmen fans will love this game. It really makes a difference with all the superb 3d graphics and moves. With different kinds of gaming styles: Survival Mode, Arcade, Academy and Versus. Go through Cerebro to look for some special pictures and other movie clips in stored for you. This game is suitable for all ages. Give it a try, there's no harm to it. So enjoy a great swelling time in this great clash, XMen mutant Academy. Enjoy. TC signing out. |

Wolvie Says, "X-Treem...ly boring" *shink* *shink* | 2.5 0 comments |

THE GOOD: decent graphics. Some cool throws and super moves. Lots of bonus features and easter eggsTHE BAD: really boring and monotanous game play SUMMARY: This game is a real throw back to the days of Street Fighter II, the original. Throw back in that computer AI's are just as stupid and cheep as they were back in those days. I was sorely disappointed in the gameplay. It was less an exercise in control and grasp of fighting techniques as it was an exercise in knowing which attack the computer wasn't sure how to defend. The best example of this is Toad. The character is shorter than most and Cyclopes' eye beam passes over him when he ducks, so he doesn't have to block. Mystique's weapon, though, is lower and hits Toad. Toad just sits there and takes the attack over and over again, never even attempting to block. Jump attacks also seem to confuse some of the AI's so they block low instead of high. The trick is just figuring out how to cheep out against each character. Magneto, in his capability as an end boss, suffers from the M. Bison effect. He wasn't winning enough so they programmed him with the ability to break the rules. He can block when he's in the middle of moves. He can respond with a throw when you try to make an attack on him. He seems to be able to block while in the air.
Now that all that frustration is out of the way allow me to say that the game looks beautiful. Featuring both comic outfits and outfits that appeared in the movie both animated very well. The music isn't that memorable but the sound effects are great. It features the voices from the cartoon series, truly an amazing cast of voice actors. There are oodles of things to unlock: Movie photos, alternate costumes, and comic scans. The problem? You have to play the game a whole bunch to see them. Frankly the cost got too high for me to see all of them. For you true X-men fans, though, this game has enough neat stuff in it to keep you playing it, no matter how much you hate the game play. |
