This game is often seen as "not quite Final Fantasy Tactics/Tactics Ogre", which is an unfair comparison between two strikingly different games. It's true that Vandal-Hearts is, like TO and FFT, a tactical RPG, but that's where the similarities stop. I'm not claiming VH is, by any standard, better than the aforementioned titles - but it's different. Yes, that's the whole premise behind this game... it's
different.
You will note, straightaway, how the game makes use of pseudo-3D, using no more than two sides per sprite (back and front), then mirroring them when the camera rotates. The sprites are grainy and pixellated; and what's more, the camera zooms in on them as they perform all their actions, allowing you to freely count all the pixels per sprite at you leisure. By the end of the game, you'll feel intimately knowledgeable about just how many pixels your characters are built up out of.
