THE GOOD: The best aspect of Ogre Battle, to me, is that there are so many ways to play this game. You can follow a "Holier Than Thou" path, an "Ok, whatever" path, and a "Kill Them All" path (and everything else in between). With that said, the re-play value is high because there are at least 12 different endings, depending on your Alignment, choices throughout the game, and your overall Luck. The total control over your troops, characters, items, etc., adds to this old school blend of RPG/Strategy. Charcters and campaigns are awfully cool, too (C'mon, a Fighter named Garlic?...classic). Weapons and items found in Ogre Battle are also bright spots. Neutral character encounters are also very interesting because you can have the chance to recruit them into your army, and normally, those characters are valuable to your cause. The encounters with Neutral characters can be few and far between, so when you find them, try to recruit them. Taking over towns and finding special characters add to the overall playability of Ogre Battle. Another awesome game from Atlus!THE BAD: Most players twenty-five years old and younger will think that the graphics are awful. Well, this game was made initially for SNES in the early 1990's, so the grahics are certainly dated. However, the story and micro-management of the game makes up for this issue. But, some players will think that there is TOO MUCH mico-management because it may take awhile to find out where the tabs are to organize and manage your troops, navigate through screens, and travel on the map. Hey, it's hard to please everybody! And that's about it for The Bad. SUMMARY: First off, let me say that this game won't appeal to all players. With this in mind, I must say that I have never been a really big fan of Real-Time Strategy games. I gave this game a chance when I found it super-duper cheap($5.00). It's worth way more than that and has turned out to be one of my favorite PSX games. If you are an RPG fan, who also likes Strategy games, then this blend by Atlus should be for you. If you only like racing games or shoot'em ups, or you think that PS2 has terrible graphics, it's probably best that you skip Ogre Battle. |
