THE GOOD: Variety of dragons and battle equipment, involved breeding techniques, various battle options.THE BAD: Limited gameplay, limited dragon lifespan in most cases. SUMMARY: Fans of dragons and of monster-breeding games should really enjoy this title, as it satisfies both the compulsions of stat-mongering and creature-diversity.
There are multiple species of dragons that one can choose from;
There's the standard saurian type that resembles any typical long-necked, long-tailed, fire-breathing dragon from western and european history. The winged type are also typical to most western and european winged dragons, but as they evolve, can start to resemble birds or gliding dinosaurs. The natura type are earthen elemental dragons that resemble golems and the like. The beetle type are just that, insect-like, with up-turned torsos that allow them to battle much like a centaur would. The wasp type are again, just that, flying insects with swollen abdomens. The crustacean type are crab-like, with large clawed hands. The spirit type are a combination of different animals that tend to float above the ground. Finally, the evil type are living objects such as doors, cages, and coffins.
Not only do these types go through a number of randomly selected evolutions, but there are also two different special types that are possible after the last stage of evolution, and there's an area called the Memory Forest, where players can obtain dragons that are generated from the data on their PS1 memory cards. With this variety of visually appealing dragons, it's sure to keep players entertained for some time.
When it comes to raising your dragon, you have a few options to choose from as to how to do so. There's the training grounds, where you can pay for one of three different lessons to strengthen your dragons statistics. There's also the junk shop, where players can spend their hard-earned cash for stat-raising items, but caution needs to be exercised when doing so, because there's no guarantee that an item will be in stock, and each visit takes up a chunk of your day's play time. The more time you take up, the more your dragon ages. Finally, you can also raise your dragon's stats by battling at either the dome or at the bar, which is a great way to earn cash.
In addition to fighting at the dome or at the bar, you can also challenge friends in a two-player fight.
As far as game aesthetics go, the environments and battle backgrounds are as wonderfully detailed as the characters and dragons, and the music is an interesting blend of cultural sounds and vocals.
In summary, apart from the slight disappointment that the battle-ready longevity of the dragons doesn't last too long (unless they turn into one of the special dragon types), and that once you've completed the game and unlocked all the dragon types to your heart's content, there's not much to do beyond keep battling the same as always, this game is extremely enjoyable, and would be a great addition to any fantasy player's library. |

THE GOOD: For a playstation game, back then the graphics were pretty impressive stuff, though a lot of it was scenery artist, which gave it a nice touch. The small graphical battles between two dragons were very smooth.
the creative designs of the dragons give you a wide variety when having a dragon to train, love, battle and care for as they grow stronger. They also have their own type of element, which makes the game a lot more fun. To help your dragon grow stronger, you can buy them weapons and items of defence. Though as you continue on with your dragon, they can eventually die, so be sure to try your hardest when raising them.
The battle system was enjoyable, though confusing at first. You have a range of where your dragon can be standing, either close to the enemy/rival dragon or at a distance. They have a scratch like attack, a defence and an elemental attack.THE BAD: The battle system confused me greatly, it wasn't the best battle system I've ever seen, it could have done with something better and a little less puzzling.
As much as the game was fun....it gets quite boring, it's basically the same thing as you go on really. SUMMARY: This game is adorable in a few ways, the fact that you can make a dragon by choosing what you say in the test, when your dragon is born, you happily raise the little guy to become a big, strong beast.
As you play, you can experience the many different techniques and qualities of the different dragons you raise. ^^ |
