THE GOOD:
- Five of the best Jedi Knights from "Episode I" complete with frantic combination moves and Force powers.
- Three bonus characters including two non-Jedi and everyone's favourite Sith Lord, Darth Maul.
- Ten amazing levels filled with tons of vicious enemies, huge leaps, platform puzzles, a few vehicle sections and impressive boss battles.
- Great graphics, music taken from John Williams' film score and all the sound effects: top marks on presentation.
- Two-player co-operative mode is a brilliant arcade-style thrill as two Jedi fight alongside each other.
- Hidden bonus levels provide amusing distractions from the main thrust of the storyline levels and make for a nice reward at the end.

THE BAD:
- Jumping sections can be tricky to judge, leading to frustration on your third or fourth attempt.
- No two-player deathmatches, although the co-operative is so strong this really isn't a problem and would not be played that much.

SUMMARY:
The original "Episode I: The Phantom Menace" game on the PlayStation focused on telling the story of the film through interactive characters, basic action sequences and more conversations and multiple routes than your standard RPG. For those wanting to battle more like a Jedi than an Ewok in the "Episode I" environment, "Jedi Power Battles" offers a side-scrolling arcade game that delivers just that.

The story of the film has been watered down to brief paragraphs of text that explain why you're hacking through legions of battle droids: the rest is all about the fighting. You control one of five Jedi available and take him or her through the entire storyline, gaining points for taking down the different types of enemies. These range from your standard battle droids, which are worth +50, to giant toxic worms and Darth Maul himself that range in the +2500 scores. These points can be spent on making your health and Force capacity larger, more combination moves and more Force powers. By the end of the tenth level, your Jedi is kitted out with three different Force powers, around thirty combination moves and a health bar big enough to take a pounding from the young Sith Lord blocking your path. This time, you fight like a proper Jedi: lightsabers twirl, spin and slash, droids can be sent flying, the Force can do anything from heal yourself to trick enemies into thinking your're invisible and bombs can be thrown around at multiple targets.

When not destroying every single battle droid ever created by the Trade Federation, "Jedi Power Battles" offers the chance to leap across tricky platforming sections. These are well-designed and thought provoking but are quite tricky... well, some are nigh-on impossible to get first time around. Lots of time will be spent falling into a big black space, especially on Tatooine. An abundance of continue checkpoints never makes retrying difficult, but it can get annoying. There are two vehicles available to pilot too: an AAT Attack Tank that can be hijacked in the city of Theed and a STAP that can be flown at high speeds towards your fight with Darth Maul. These, in comparison with the jumping sections, are nice diversions.

The entire game can be played either on your own or alongside a friend, making the battles slightly easier as you share the workload (just be warned that if you're ace at jumping and your colleague isn't you may want to play something else). As a reward for completing the game with certain characters, bonus missions and playable characters are unlocked, including a survival challenge for the chance to win the ultimate one-hit lightsaber and the sinister Darth Maul to use, although why he's fighting himself in the last level is beyond me. Music, sound, graphics and presentation is all top LucasArts notch, including a great pre-rendered opening cutscene showing off the five main Jedi's best moves.

"Jedi Power Battles" is definately worth a purchase and full completion for fans of Star Wars and fans of impressive fight sequences in platform videogames. An entertaining hack and slash through the science fiction environments of "Episode I" has been executed brilliantly and, despite a few sections of trying jumping, is a wonderful arcade-style action game. Snap up a copy as soon as you can, and if you have a Dreamcast, try that version for even better visuals, more bonus characters and a few training missions.

THE GOOD:
Non stop action and using the force to guide you through the toughest times. Having the energy to move forward through difficult tasks and to complete complicated levels. The music matches the theme and the special graphics and effects make it look to engrossing at times.

THE BAD:
At the very end of the final battle, I may had a glitch on my game, when Ben was trying to get through the moving energy rooms that show a bright red layer of a shield of some type. I couldn't find a way through until I had to keep forcing the character to run through the wall and eventually he got in. There seem like no other way.

When you went to Tatoonie? to free Anakin SkyWalker, destroying the monster in the cage was not an easy task because of the time involved. If you kill too many of the wrong people, the game is over.

SUMMARY:
This game is full of non-stop action and based on the movie. If you had not seen the first movie of the Stars War log, then you may have a difficulty of understanding how to play the game. Its based on the entire movie only your the one acting out the main role. The music is beautifully done, and the graphics are rich in detail with computer technology, you almost seem to forget where you are sitting at.

THE GOOD:
The sound, the relation to the star wars episode I film and the length of the game. Also the unlockable characters and extra levels are something to play for.

THE BAD:
The graphics could have been better and the game play really sucks.

SUMMARY:
at first it was hard because of the difficulty getting used to the controls.
then i whizzed through the game and completed it easily.
ths game is a good buy and great for starwars fanatics like myself!
heres what i gave it

GRAPHICS: 3.0 : Could have been alot better.
SOUND: 5.0 : Original star wars theme tunes.
GAMEPLAY: 4.0 : Decent but could have been a bit better and easier to control.
LIFE SPAN: 5.0 : Bloody tricky. Bloody addictive. Enough said.

OVERALL VEIW: Brilliant game but requires some small improvements.

THE GOOD:
Five different Jedi, secret characters, great level design, multiplayer and wonderful gameplay.

THE BAD:
Easy Mode just like Jedi Mode and a near-impossible duel with Darth Maul.

SUMMARY:
Choosing from either Plo Koon, Qui-Gon Jinn, Mace Windu, Obi-Wan Kenobi or Adi Gallia, you start this game with a great level, filled with killer Battle Droids, Droideka's and annoying little 3PO units which are fun to kill.

Throughout the game, you are rewarded with new Force powers, lightsaber combo's and heath upgrades, but this does not make your task easier: the levels get increasingly tougher, with Naboo giving way to Tatooine, Courscant and then back to Naboo again. It's no use: the amount of new skills you pick up cannot make the game easier. This can be either challenging or annoying.

The multiplayer aspect, letting you play the whole game with a friend, alleviates some of this pressure, allowing you to split the amount of enemies between you. Making good use of this means you can complete the game in half the time, although the fact that one player can die if the other runs ahead impatiantly does get annoying from time to time.

The final duel with Darth Maul is the hardest part of the game: unless you can use someone like Qui-Gon Jinn and keep stabbing the evil Sith Lord, it is almost impossible to bring Maul's health down low enough to win, and when he hits you once, he hits you a million times. It can be done, but it takes time.

Secret characters include Darth Maul himself, Queen Amidala and Captain Panaka, while some secret levels include taking control of a Droideka and racing a Battle Droid on something called a Kaadu. The "Gungan Hunt" level is very funny: hounding Jar-Jar Binks around while he screams in pain is very rewarding!

All in all, a decent effort here to put a twist on "The Phantom Menace", yet it falls by the wayside when you can play such games as "Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace" and "Star Wars: Demolition." Buy it for the fact that you can be Darth Maul and stab Jar-Jar Binks.

THE GOOD:
The gameplay

THE BAD:
Too much jumping

SUMMARY:
This was one of my favorite games for the PSX despite its difficulty. I still like the Dreamcast version better simply because the easy mode is easy, but the Jedi Mode is still hard. I didn't enjoy the fact that you have to jump a lot in the game, and I hated it when someone shoot the character while I was jumping.

Bottom Line

This game is okay, but could have been better.

THE GOOD:
Different characters, 2 player co-op mode, secret levels and characters, detailed levels. Beatable with no enhancements.

THE BAD:
Very few areas where the game can be saved.

SUMMARY:
Who the heck rated this game poorly? You say you can't beat the game with Plo Koon, I've done it. You'd better do it soon though, he dies in Episode 2.
Though some of the enemies aren't straight from the movies, they very well could be. Terriffic in keeping with the theme.
