Dark Dom's Rating: 3.5/5
Metal Gear has been a massive series in the history of video games. It tells the tale of one man, Snake, and his various missions through a time line which us fans have followed. Strangely enough, Metal Gear Ac!d completely ditched the main story for a strange non-canon spin-off which involved... cards? This of course made people WTF and it certainly didn't have a good outcry from the public. Metal Gear Ac!d was my second PSP game I'd ever bought, and it let me down. Strange storyline, odd card system, mediocre graphics, it's like it was trying to be Metal Gear, but didn't quite make it. Metal Gear Ac!dē however, changed my opinion. I bought the game at a low price, and I was surprised. The graphics were changed to a trippy, Cell-shaded, LSD inspired theme which was exceedingly interesting to look at.
Woah... SNAKE?
The character models were completely remade. Out with the crazy storyline about some Winnie The Pooh dolls hijacking an airplane, and in with a completely new story which made Ac!d a game of it's own. First off, if you don't like fuchsia, lime, red and yellow, don't play this. You have to put up with wacky colours throughout the game. 500 Cards to collect, all with nice little fan-references to the series and even cards which refer to MGS4 which I feel was a nice touch. The game features a tutorial which gets you into the game if you haven't played the first one. The game isn't too hard to learn, but you need to get heaps of practice in order to build the ultimate deck. Irony that Konami does Yu-Gi-Oh as well as MGA?
Venus, the heroine. She's one cold bitch.
Gameplay is rather straightforward. You can equip items in order to power yourself up, or you can power up weapons. There are straightforward attack cards, and cards which require two of in order to attack. Grenades are an example of instant attack cards. You can use two cards per turn. Like most MG games, if you're spotted enemies pour out of every doorway to kick your ass, so it's best to kill everyone before you're spotted. That's what I do anyway. =| Venus is the heroine in this game, and she's one badass. Uses some bladed weapons to cut down enemies and feels no remorse for killing. None. She's very handy to have on your team to be honest.
The game itself is rather short, but you have over 500 cards to collect and some nifty features like Arena Mode, where you battle previous MG bosses (like Vamp and The Boss) in a 2v2 system. Along with that, certain cards unlock films in the gallery which can be viewed in 3D with the free goggles which come with the game. Most of the movies are some hot Japanese chick showing off, but I'm not complaining. There are also a few MGS4 trailers, which is cool.
Bosses are pretty rad too.
Bosses play quite a prominent role in the game. They're rather fun to fight, especially when they have themed decks. I'd tell you what they are, but I don't want to spoil anything. This badass, above, uses a rocket launcher to whoop your team. Status ailments are also a part of the game. Burns, sleep, poison, like any good strategy game, it's there.
In conclusion, it's a good game again for those Card-game & MGS lovers but it might not attract anyone else. I personally love it for the MG Library seeing as each card has some explanation which keeps me reading. The game is short unless you're a perfectionist and there aren't many modes or anything to keep the game going besides Normal and Hard. You'll probably play on Hard after completing the game on Normal. Normal is hard enough. |
