Perhaps the saddest story of video game development ever told. Originally announced as a title under development by the same team responsible for Shadow of the Colossus and Ico, The Last Guardian has gone through development team changes and what's rumored to be a cancellation leading to a project reboot. While Sony executives continue to claim the game is still in development, it's now rather a red herring when referred to by internet communities.

What really is The Last Guardian, though? Much like its Team Ico predecessors, The Last Guardian is a third-person action adventure game with a focus on heavy atmosphere and subtle, complex themes. It tells the story of a boy escaping from a large, labyrinthine complex and the creature he meets along the way -- a giant griffon with the face of a dog. At first the two treat each other in a hostile manner, but as the game progresses the two grow closer. Escape will require that the two work together.

Gameplay in The Last Guardian is rather clever. The player has complete control over the boy, who will need to climb and leap his way through a variety of platforming puzzles. There's also an enemy element to the game, so stealth movements, hiding from slow-moving guards, will also be required. The griffon is also significant to gameplay, as the boy can climb onto and even ride the griffon. However, the griffon is not controllable, it's AI controlled. The player can "influence" its natural movements, but will otherwise have to learn to work with the creature to progress.

Other types of gameplay revolving around the player's interaction with the griffon are also significant. There's mention of having to feed the griffon, to remove arrows from its hide, or dealing with its sleeping habits.
