The prequel's story unfolds across two generations instead of five like in Agarest War, though the "Soul Breed" dating sim feature returns allowing players to choose a bride for the hero and ultimately determine what abilities and skills the hero's descendant will inherit for the second half of the game. Characters can be further customized using the Card Skill system to upgrade their weapons.
New to the dating sim gameplay of Agarest War is the "Feel Link", which essentially unlocks new costumes for the heroine based on their relationship with the hero.
The turn-based battles are conducted on isometric maps with grid-based movement and range selection. Players can capture monsters and recruit them to their party.
The iOS release of Record of Agarest War Zero features touchscreen controls, MFi controller support, and iCloud save backup. Note that there is no English voice track for the iOS release, and all voiced dialogue will remain in Japanese with English subtitles.
