"If you have any familiarity with either series, a One Piece take on Dynasty Warriors is the most known of quantities; in the brief time I spent with Pirate Warriors, the game didn't offer many surprises, though, as I've said, Koei's long-running franchise makes for the perfect One Piece video game format, since the protagonists' powers finally look as destructive and weird as they do in the anime and manga. And, given the relatively small-but-rabid anime fanbase still thriving in the states, Pirate Warriors' release makes perfect sense as well: it'll only be available as a dub-free download on PSN. This gives fans exactly what they want, while removing the risk involved in paying for a dub and packaging/distribution. As we've seen in the retro space, this fansub-type approach works well for games that don't necessarily have broad appeal; let's hope that Pirate Warriors opens the doors for more quirky Japanese-only PS3 titles that might be too niche for the full retail treatment."
"Just like every other Musuo in the past 15 years, some of the camera views are not only awful they actually ruin some stages completely. I ended up having to buy a new controller after one boss fight thanks to the ridiculous forced camera angles. (The trials and tribulations of writing with a deadline). Multiple boss fights are artificially tougher than they need to be; you can either get chewed up once the fight moves to the edges of the map or just take every hit to avoid dodging to the periphery."
"One Piece: Pirate Warriors is a game that surprised me with how fun it was. I have enjoyed other entries in the Warriors franchise, but I feel that the core gameplay of One Piece: Pirate Warriors gave me the most entertaining time. It does contain problems that need fixing, but with the recent announcement of Fist of the North Star: Ken’s Rage getting a sequel, a One Piece follow-up is no doubt in the pipeline, and hopefully will build on what is already in place and remove the rubbish that brings down the overall experience."
"I've never really paid attention to Dynasty Warriors, as Chinese history usually isn't something that grabs my attention. Besides, I didn't think that I was missing much more than a whole lot of button mashing. Then Namco Ban..."
