Mega Man 9 marked the return of the Blue Bomber to his 2D platforming roots, complete with 8-bit NES style graphics. Dr. Light has been framed for a series of attacks at the hands of a new collection of Robot Masters, and Mega Man must return to action in order to clear his creator's name.

Players will tackle eight initial stages in any order they desire in order to defeat the Robot Master bosses and earn their special weapon, which another Robot Master just might be weak against! Then players must confront the true mastermind by challenging a final set of stages filled with their own obstacles and bosses.

This throwback to classic NES games extends beyond the presentation and gameplay right down to the controls themselves; even the promotional art was designed to evoke the misleading and infamous North American box art of the very first game in the series.

Mega Man character designer Keiji Inafune himself returned to helm the revival of Mega Man on home consoles which were current-gen at time of development (Wii, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360). According to Inafune, the game was designed to be closest to Mega Man 2 in spirit.
