PS2 Tomb Raider: AOD 2.8

With the massive success of Lara Croft on the PC it was inevitable she'd wander onto the PS2 eventually. She took her time getting there but that only fueled our high expectations of a next-gen Lara. Unfortunatly though making her breasts bigger and adding more polygons to make them smoother didn't stop the game becoming what has to be the biggest let down of all time.
Usually when I write reviews I insist on completing them first, but no matter how hard I tried to force myself to complete this I just didn't want to. It wasn't due to lack of skill on my part though, it was due to lack of interest and boredom. To put it simply this is not a fun game to play at all.

Why I hear you ask.
Well first of all there's the...

CONTROLS
I thought the controls would be a dream from the PC days but god was I wrong.
Like a lot of games pushing the left anolog stick all the way forward makes Lara run. But there's a catch...she has to get up to speed first. Which means when you first push the stick all the way forward Lara first walks 6 or 7 steps before she starts to run. Usually by the time Lara starts running you've already reached your destination. Accidentally bump into a wall or object while running and Lara comes to a stand still which means having to get her up to speed again.
Everything has to be precise too. If you want to climb into a window or up a ladder you have to position her right in front of it, stop and then push forward again to make her climb.
It's just extremely irritating how a simple task can become such big thing to do. Other games manage it seemlessly so why can't Lara??

GRAPHICS
While the graphics are better then the Tomb Raiders I played on my old PC they're still nothing special. The graphics are far from pushing the PS2 to it's limit that's for sure. The FMV cut-scenes however do impress. Nothing we haven't seen before but still quite beautiful.
The In-Game Cut Scenes however really disappoint. Core Design are not known for their great graphics though, take Project Eden for example. They could've done a lot better for their star character Lara though.

STORY
While the story tries hard to surprise you with twists and turns it's all pretty predictable to say the least.
She's being accused of crime she didn't commit..bla...bla..bla. Definitely nothing original to see here.

GAMEPLAY
They've tried to add an element of variety in this installment. Instead of simply following the story from A to B you are now given options at certain part of the story. Apparently the path you choose to take has an effect on the game.
Every so often during a conversation with any one of the characters you meet along the way you're given the option to choose how to answer. I tested this at the first conversation in the Apartment and yes, if you reply negative to all the options you don't get the notebook unlike when you be nice to the lady.
This may seem like a good idea but god it is soooo boring to do. Conversations are already boring and long without having to keep the controller in your hand so you can just press X. I'd prefer to just let them talk while I go and make a cup of tea.

They also tried adding an RPG element too. The more experience you have in certain tasks the better you are. For example if Lara needs to shimmy along a ledge but she keeps falling short try dragging a crate a few times to get her strength up.
It's a nice idea but very badly incorporated into the game. For example early on in the game you need to make a jump to get to another platform. However Lara can't make it. So you have to go back outside where a helicopter is shooting at you just to move a crate a few feet so Lara becomes strong enough to make the jump.

OVERALL
As much as I hate being negative in reviews especially when it comes to a game I loved when I was young I'd be lying if I told you this was brilliant.
Even the biggest fans of the series might struggle to enjoy this.

THE GOOD:
Everything

THE BAD:
The bugs

SUMMARY:
Lara returns for a 6th outing on the home consoles. YaY! She's on the run from the police and to find the murderer of her mentor Werner Von Croy. Lara starts in Paris accused for murder and without her backpack (no, not the famous brown backpack!). Everythings changed (because she doesn't have her backpack, you see? ) from the graphics to the controls.
Lara looks stunning and so do the FMVs. The graphics are top notch. And I love the new controls. The analouge sticks are particularly easy to use and you have more contol over Lara. Plus being able to contol the camera is a blessing.
I must admit tho' that Lara has a lot more animations like stealth and hand-to-hand combat. She has a lot, but only manages to do some of these well. Her usual shooting, adventure and puzzles are brilliant but the stealth is useless and while hand-to-hand is fun, it's not useful either.
The levels range in difficulty and lenght. Some from way out fun (The Louvre and Bio-Research Facility spring to mind) while others are just a waste of space (Margot Carvier's Apartment and Neptune's Hall anyone?) but they all require some amount of skill... maybe except Margot Carvier's Apartment and Café Metro . But these two levels introduce us to a new ability in the game - the ability to talk to people. While you usually always get the same outcome, the amount of information you get towards the overall story varies. The nicer you are the more info you'll get. The nastier, the less. This ability works well in some places but not in others. It doesn't really affect the game too much.
Another new adition to the game - the upgrade ability. Like the talk ability you'll come to the same outcome. Eventually you'll get all the upgrades, sometimes it takes longer. If you're more explorious you're gonna get them faster. If not, you'll have to wait.
The storyline is confusing. Until you figure it out. The storyline is excellent in my opinion, with lots of twists and turns it keeps you guessing, right to the very end of the game. It was brilliantly done.
The only major bad thing I can think about is the bugs and glitches, but every game has them. This game is just more open about it, LoL! You'll encounter slowdown, super flying guards when you kill them, disco hair and a few others, but they shouldn't effect your gameplay in anyway. And some of them are truly hilarious.
Overall this game is a great edition to the Tomb Raider series and worthy to an Action/Adventurers collection. A must buy!

THE GOOD:
Wikid outfits, much improved graphics, cool people to talk to (even a prozzie) new weapons, new moves and you get to werner von croy die ha ha!

THE BAD:
hmmmm yes, loading can be annoying but it giv u time to av a bite of a choccy bar and sometimes it can build suspense. anyway i dont no y every1 is so pissed off about it? its a 5 second load screen? do u all have school to go to?

SUMMARY:
reading some of these reveiws i think some of them are brilliant opinions good and bad and some are a bit exagerated.
for instance, the "constant frustrating annoying etc loading screens" last a meer 5 seconds.
controls, have you people never used analogue before? it took me about 10 minute to get used to it and if ur a bigger fan of tomb raider than me, ull be quiker!
camera angles, obviously u people havnt noticed u can change the camera angle if u just move the analogue stick round to the desired angle. have a go... im not lying!

Well i think thats the most common bad points sorted out, now to the gud bits....
This is brill game to play with a mate. I play mine with my mates n boyfriend all the time, i usually controll n they remeber where stuff is and direct me. it really is fun.
the game is massive and there is so much to do and loadsa new people to talk to, the new guys quite dishy too! i dont think eidos has done a bad job, change is good, if they hadnt changed it people would have got bored and it would be like playing the same tomb raider game over n over but with new levels, the whole thing would be so predictable! The only bad point i cud put to n e tomb raider game is, eidos is showing no signs of making more tomb raider games which has me more dissapointed than the people who have bought this game and hated it. If u like tomb raider, i think u shud get the game regardless. If you dont like it, thts no biggie jus take/send it bak? easy as pie. no use gettin mad n smashing ya ps2 up! hope this has been useful, Shawty. www.kinkykuties.4t.com

THE GOOD:
-Graphics
-Music
-Animation
-Story
THE BAD:
-Ocassional slow downs
-Numerous load up screens
-No Vibrate
SUMMARY:
Ok I just picked up this game today for $14.99 at Best Buy. Frankly I have been a little weary about purchasing this game because people pretty much thought it was terrible. Well I mean $15 I felt might as well give it a chance because I have been wanting to get this game ever since I heard about TR coming out for the PS2. Frankly I'm not that big of a Tomb Raider fan, I never really played the games much, I played Revelations for the Dreamcast and liked it enough but my memory card corrupted and I never felt like starting again. Anyways, when I put this game in I had no expectations..in fact I expected it to suck...totally wrong. Sure it has its gliches and the manual is even wrong in some places, but the Greatest Hits version comes with a little piece of paper that tells you what the manual is screwed up on. The biggest thing was there is no vibration option, which was werid and I always like but oh well...

Overall the game is good, totally different than the previous games, and in my opinon it is better. You can talk with people, pick what to say and even change the storyline. You can choose what to do and that will also change the storyline. There is actually a little bit of depth to this game. The graphics are gorgeous, especially the rain and wind effects. And the music makes it sound like you are in a Tomb Raider movie. The Controls are a bit stechy at first, but once you get used to them you will be fine, save a lot, just in case you make a mistake, you can save wherever.

Really my only complaint is the loading screens, they take like 5 seconds and its a loading screen everytime you go into a building or move to another part of the city. Other than that I like it I can put up with the occasional slow downs and no vibration, I'm not really going to analyzed it a whole lot because I got the game for $15 bucks, and its worth that. So if you like Tombraider or adventure type games give it a try for $15-20 bucks you can't go wrong.

THE GOOD:
Interesting story...Lara...Graphics...Extra character..enemies..interaction with other characters

THE BAD:
Some glitches and slow down

SUMMARY:
I have been a major TombRaider/Lara Croft fan for quite some time.I have all the games and love them all, but i must admit i was a bit confused as to whether or not i should buy TombRaider:AOD after hearing all the negative comments people had been giving the game.Luckily, i received it as a gift on my Bday.Newayz.Since it is on the PS2 now..the graphics are great...there are some glitches though and some slow down every once in awhile, but it doesnt take away from the game. The levels are even more interesting...you go from city rooftops..into mansions..museums..mental hospital..and yes even some tombs(many have lava, fire,or are flooded with water). The story is darker than any other in the TombRaider series. It revolves around Lara being framed for a friend's grisly murder and while trying to find who really did it, she is trying to find some black magick paintings that hold the key to bringing an ancient demon to life before a group of evil people by the name of the Cabal do.In the game, you are introduced to a whole new character, Kurtis Trent. You only play as him in 2 levels but he has cool psychic powers that enable him to see enemies that may be lurking in the next room, or help him find the password to a lock.Now..the enemies are also better. They are smarter..and some are just plain creepy. In TR:AOD you are also able to talk to different characters (including a hooker...mob boss..etc)..the things you say to them determines your path.TR:AOD is a great game that any TombRaider fan will love...or it may turn many into TombRaider fans.

PS2 Tomb Raider 'the angel of darkness' 3.5

THE GOOD:
Although Tomb Raider 'the angel of darkness' differs alot more to other Tomb Raider games, it does has its good points; excellent graphics, involved storyline and new abilities enabling Lara to move like a real person.

THE BAD:
However, there're are some bad points too the game. One of my main ones; her pistols, I have finished the game and was severely disappointed when not coming across her biggest trademark; twin pair of 9mm pistols. I was sick of all the one gun weapons and then when I saw on the mini demo at the beginning of the game, it showed Lara shooting with her pistols, but I never could find them. If anyone does knowm=, please be kind enough to email me with the solution, please.

SUMMARY:
Ok, the game in itself isn't that bad. I've played a few games and though the graphics were awesome and when i went back to replay the old TRs I found it the graphics too appalling to play. Another big thing is when of if you want to replay the game, you can choose a different path whether it being interacting with other characters of choosing a different door, you can find yourself doing something new. The worlds in this game are huge and there is so much to do. A few flaws i didn't like are; the flickering of bad dead bad guys, the difficult contols, the lost abilties eg... the roll in the air, and the whole new stealth mode where you dont even need stealth at all in the entire game except for maybe the first level but even then you can still kill the guy no prob. But overall i feel the game is worth the effort and the next one,(sopposedly due around Christmas) will have ironed at the crinkles and Lara will be back and even better then before (with her PISTOLS!)

THE GOOD:
Very exciting story, great characters, and cool weapons. Also very challenging. Also, MUCH better graphics

THE BAD:
Alot of Lara's signature moves/weapons arent in this game...
Plus this game started to delay, and then another delay, and once again another delay...

SUMMARY:
At first, this game gets a little getting used too. But a little later on, when you start getting into the game, you become to get used to it. At first I was a little disappointed. I dont like the upgrades, they piss me off. And she doesnt have her double pistol with infinate ammo.

OK, done with the bad things...
This game has a really interesting stroy with really interesting characters, which makes this a really interesting game...
This is challenging, and I like it that way, that means I dont beat it in one day. This game and some twists and turns, and some parts you woulda never expected some things to happen.
Another good part...
There is a new character Kurtis Trent. He is somewhat slow, but is a good character. You would have fun playing as him.
Now since I am a major Tomb Raider fan, I bought it. Ever major tomb raider fan should. If you just started playing this game, some parts will be confuzing, but you'll understand a little.

I would buy this game if I were you, because i find this game really good.

THE GOOD:
Boobs.

THE BAD:
Boring, random slowdowns, it crashes alot, it's not even finished, the enemies suck, the camera will drive you nuts, the game just all around sucks.

SUMMARY:
Eidos should really be ashamed of themselves for this pile of crap. Like every other tomb raider game: this one sucks. But this is possibly the worst of them all, it's badly put together and just not even done yet, even the intruction manual is screwed up! It tells you controls that aren't even actually in the game! The control is terrible (as usual in the world of tomb raider) Lara still turns slowly, is hard to line up with things and seems very clumsy to be in a video game. The enemies are so stupid it's funny, sometimes they'll just walk around you in circles not even attacking you. The games graphics seem really dated, they look like DC calibur visuals. It took them four years to make this!? Please, for the sake of your sanity, avoid this game!

THE GOOD:
Graphics

THE BAD:
Jumping, like normal

SUMMARY:
I have played every one of the tomb raider games and have loved them. There is something different with this one and I do not like it. My only cheat or advice that I have is stay away from this game. This has gone to far and everything they did was the wrong theory. It is now about the movies and media. I love my movies and I love my media, but I want my games to be separate. I was happy to see the movies out for Tomb Raider, but I was upset to see that the next game has been taken into a new direction of its background to also attract the people that only liked the movie. If you are a true Tomb Raider player, you will understand.
