TimeSplitters: Pretty much perfect | 4.9 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Brilliant Story mode Vast array of characters to unlock A fearsome arsenal of weapons Non-stop hilarity
THE BAD:
The bots aren't very good at tactics The Story mode could have been longer Still can't jumpSUMMARY:
It's time to split!
Game types: Single Player Multi-player Arcade Challenge Map maker Online play
Sergeant Cortez is back in a race against - and through through time. He has successfully retrieved the Time Crystals, and has set up a time machine of his own. With the aid of the "voice in his head", Anya, he plans to go back through time and trace the origin of the vicious TimeSplitters and save the world from annihilation.
The third in its series, Future Perfect is pretty much exactly that; perfect. It has a vastly improved story mode, in which you can travel through 6 time periods, battling robots and zombies and henchmen and big, ugly, time-travelling monster things, who are known as TimeSplitters. Cortez has also upgraded his Temporal Uplink. In TimeSplitters 2, it was basically just an electronic map that Cortez carried around in his pocket. In Future Perfect, not only is it now wrist mounted, but it has a brand new feature which lets you move objects from a distance. The ultimate lazy mans tool! Why go pick up your ammo, health or amour, when you can simply suck it in to you with this trendy wrist band! The story mode wont really challenge your skills or patience much, the story is compelling and funny. Each time period has you doing something different too! In 1969, you'll team up with the swinging superspy, Harry Tipper, as he attempts to stop a Bond-type villain from launching a missile from a moving train. In 1994, you'll team up with a short-skirted girl (complete with a T-shirt that reads "slut") to infiltrate a zombie-filled mansion.
The coolest part of it all, is that there is meet yourself gameplay. Throughout the story you will be interacting with your past or future self. Sometimes it can be as basic as handing over a key. Others you will have to provide cover fire to yourself, ensuring that he survives to, in turn, provide cover fire for his past self. The interactions between past and future Cortez are usually pretty inventive and funny too. You can also play the story mode with a second player, which makes for some quality co-operative play.
The game also has many other single player features. Arcade League is where you can go up against bots in a variety of matches, with the sole purpose to earn trophies. These trophies, depending on whether they are Gold, Silver or Bronze, can unlock bots to play against in Arcade. The Challenge mode also has a lot of fun side games to play in single player, such as racing robotic cats, throwinig bricks through windows, and a lot more. Some of these activites are fun and others make you want to rip your hair out from frustration. But in the end, patience will get you the trophies you need for multiplayer Arcade mode. There are 150 characters to unlock in all, with their own special stats and skills.
The multiplayer mode offers a wide range of gameplay modes to choose from. There are deathmatch type games like Thief, where when a person/bot is killed, they leave a coin and by picking up that coin you get a point. There is also Vampire, where you must kill others to prevent a meter from draining, which will kill you if it runs out. There are team games, such as Capture The Bag and Assault, among others.
All of these matches can be played against bots, or other people. The bots are somewhat simplistic, and dont really focus on what they are supposed to be achieving sometimes(in Assault for example), and get distracted with wanting to kill other players/bots. You can raise the stats of the bots, to make them more difficult to beat, but in the end, it is better to just play against people. There is split screen mode or online mode.
The soundtrack for Future Perfect is quality and one of the best soundtracks on any first-person shooters today. The sound effects, however, are somewhat lacking. The weapon sounds could be better, and you never know if someone is creeping up behind you, as there are no footsteps. Combined with the lack of "bobbing", it makes the player feel like they are being wheeled around the level. The dialogue is incredibly powerful, and Cortez outshines most other characters in the game, in both what he says and how he says it.
TimeSplitters: Future Perfect is overall a great game with tons of replay value, both in multiplayer and botmatches. Though the graphics could have been better, it makes up for it in the humour throughout the game. This is one of the best First-Person Shooters released on the Playstation 2.

Futuristic Review | 4.2 3 comments |

THE GOOD: Plenty of characters to unlock and play as. 13 game modes to play. A variety of weapons to choose. Nice storyline concept. Online play. Mapmaker feature. Arcade league/ChallengesTHE BAD:
Too few levels to play in arcade. Not that many vehicles.SUMMARY: Welcome to my review of TimeSplitters: Future Perfect for the Playstation 2!
» Plot
Back to the year 2401, Cortez (you) steers his spaceship back towards Earth with the Time Crystals he retrieved from the previous missions. Unfortunately, a laser hits the ship and causes it to malfunction and crash into the side of a mountain. When Cortez comes back into consciousness, he is found by other soldiers and removed from the wreckage. They give him a gun and escort him back toward the base. Some fighting ensues but they manage to make it. Inside the base, Cortez hands over the Crystals so that they could be placed in the Time Machine. Cortez is then transported back to the year 1924 to find and destroy the TimeSplitters before they were ever born. However, Cortez doesn't realize that he's about to embark on a journey through numerous time periods to finally succeed his mission.
» Audio
The music is great; each level has music that corresponds to the time period. There is a large selection of tracks that are playable in Arcade mode as well. The sound effects are amazing as well. Each weapon has their own unique firing sound, which means that they all do not sound like the same weapon. The vehicles also have nice sound effects with the roar of the engine and when they crash into walls and stuff.
» Visuals
The graphics are alright, not good or bad, but it could have done much better for a PS2 game. The characters don't look that much detailed as they should and most of the time they manage to blend in with the walls or other objects. The guns, however, do have good detail.
The levels are quite nice but also could have done better. Many glitches cause some things on the level to look very weird like a wall suddenly turning different colors or just disappearing completely.

» Controls
The controls are intermediate, meaning they aren't that hard to learn but do require some form of mastery. They are responsive and great, but sometimes the aiming can be a little off. You can only use the Analog sticks to move, which is good because just using the directional pad would have been disastrous. Other than the aiming, TS:FP has some great controls and a nice control scheme.
» Gameplay Aspects
Time for get down to the good stuff.
Storyline Concept
I really like the whole time-traveling aspect they had going on there. On some parts of the level, you'll meet your future self who will help you get through this and that, then later you find a wormhole which puts you in the spot of helping out your past self doing the same thing you just did. On one level there are four of you helping each other through a very tough situation. It's a fun concept that I enjoyed a lot when playing Story mode.
Arcade League/Challenges
The Arcade League was a fun experience to play. Each of the levels were divided into three groups: Beginning, Honorary and Elite. The farther you progressed, the harder each level got. Some were flat-out difficult to complete and required a huge amount of retries.
Challenge mode is a lot like the Leagues except you do crazy things like break dishes with bricks and some other stuff. Nonetheless it was entertaining to complete all of the Challenges.
Mapmaker Feature
Sometimes it can get a little boring playing the same old maps over and over again, which is why the Mapmaker feature was implemented. You can create a map of any size and shape with all sorts of items, health packs, armors, weapons and vehicles. You can adjust the light colors and make them flicker or pulse. You can even have it indoors or outdoors, it's entirely up to you. Maps are also available to download of the internet if you don't feel like making any.
Game Modes
A total of 13 game modes are available to play on TimeSplitters: Future Perfect. Of these are Virus, Bagtag, Capture The Bag, Deathmatch, Gladiator, Assault and more. All of them have options that can be changed to make the most out of each match, and at the end of a match, stats are displayed to see who stood out as the best player. Play with a friend or take it online to ramp up the gameplay.
» Final Thoughts
Overall this game is easily considered the best of the series and I still enjoy playing it a lot. Though some things could have been improved, this game deserves a 4.2/5 and I recommend trying this game out. |

THE GOOD: + Loads of Characetrs to unlock and play with + Good detail and Graphics + Lots of depth + Great ares to play + OnlineTHE BAD: - Glitches - Aiming can be a little dodgy - Too small areas but they are good - More missions SUMMARY: Timesplitters: Future perfect is probaly one of the best shoot em ups on the PS2. With lots of characters to unlock and play with it takes you month to play with them all. As for depth, it never stops. Even when you have completed the story you can go on and try the challenges!! But the missions are short and there are not many of them. Most of the gameplay in the missions is outstanding but its just the lenght and how many missions there are that let thus game down. However I stand by my word and say its the best shoot em up on the PS2. |

THE GOOD: Lots of weaponary Better jokes Much improved story More characters to unlock You can see your hands Proper reloading More less everything else
THE BAD: Easier Far easier SUMMARY: It is the return of one of my favourite games of all time. TimeSplitters: Future Perfect is almost perfect. Story's been tweaked, all of the weapons and everything.
The story picks up where TimeSplitters 2 ended. Space marine, Sgt. Cortez, is on his way back to Earth to deliver the Time Crystals. But everything is still not happy. TimeSplitters are still attacking and Cortez also discovers another human using time travelling too. The story is so much better. There is more characters, cutscenes and jokes that can actually work.
During th game you actually meet up with other versions of Cortez. The future and past thing is hard to explain but you get to play in both roles and it works pretty well.
The weapons in TimeSplitters: Future Perfect are great. Weapons like the Tactical 12-gauge shotgun and the Plasma Autorifle have been put up in power and everything is really good. Dual-wielding weapons is so fun it is enough to make you cry with joy. Cortez also aquires a new Temporial Uplink but now it can be use to thrust objects around and get items that are maybe out of reach.
The graphics are amazing. It looks stunning. PS2 is getting old and the graphics are getting outdone by the Xbox and PC but these graphics can compete. (But will still probably lose.)
The gameplay is still remarkable but the difficulty has been toned down. The story mode is leads you through like if you were a new born puppy. Still fun but people like me will find the game too easy.
I highly recommend TimeSplitters: Future Perfect to anyone who has thumbs. |

THE GOOD: A massive (and I mean massive) range of weaponry, including some secret guns and projectiles to unlock. An absorbing story mode. An action packed multiplayer with many maps and characters to choose from. Online gameplay is a dream to behold. Mapmaker allows you to create your own story missions that are almost as good as the single player ones. Unbelievable detailed graphics.THE BAD: Why oh why has the monkey returned? Story mode is a little short. Too easy in some places. Hard mode and medium are incredible difficult to tell apart. SUMMARY: Many thought that the second game was gaming heaven, and would never be beaten. They were wrong. The third is one of the best (if not THE best) games I have ever had the pleasure of playing. Single player is incredibly fun (if a little short) and you will play it time and time again. It's finally online-enabled, and you better believe it's great. Mapmaker is one of the main reasons I bought this game, and I wasn't disappointed. You can put in vehicles, countless items such as gun posts and weapons, many tiles and lights, and up to fifty enemies to kill. In every way, brilliant. |

Superb, just not quite deserving a full 5/5... | 4.5 0 comments |
by __S_i__ from , , England | Apr 11, 2005 |
Plenty of people hated Timesplitters 2. Just as many loved it, one of which being me. So after having played it pretty much constantly since it's release, I was hugely looking forward to this. And well, it's great. It's still very much a TS game - if your reason for hating it before was the comedy and the lack of seriousness then the addition of blood and the occasional 'damn' in the story cut-scenes aren't about to change your mind. You're still greeted by dancing dinosaurs and robots with goldfish bowls for heads on the character selection screen. But what's wrong with a non-serious game once in a while? Beats playing another WW2 game if you ask me...
Anyway, on to the game itself. The story mode is longer and actually contains a story this time, which is nice. And nice is pretty much how I'll sum it up. It's okay, argually 'better' than in TS2, but I actually prefer the TS2 one. Fine there was very little story, but the levels were much more enjoyable and varied so so what? They're longer now yes, they look nicer yes, they relate to the story yes, but are they as varied style and gameplay-wise? No. Each level feels very similar - you're fighting different people but you never really need a different approach to each one. Don't get me wrong, TS2's story mode was poor, but at least I enjoyed it more and was more than happy playing it through a second time on hard (which was damn hard, no longer). I'll leave the story mode there though since I know a lot of people will disagree with me and claim it to be miles better than before.
The single-player arcade and challenge modes are back again, and if you owned either of the previous games that's either great news or it isn't, only you know whether or not you enjoyed them. Just know that once again they're where most of the unlockable content is to be gained. To those who've never played either, the arcade leagues are basically just specific deathmatches set up for you to compete in. Either by getting a certain number of points/kills or finishing in a certain time you'll get a medal. I really enjoy them, they add a massive amount of play time on top of the story mode (especially if you go for platinum medals). The challenge mode is similar, but it doesn't involve deathmatches, instead some pretty diverse and random events, the most bizarre being remote-controlled cat driving, charging up the batteries on dancing cyborg monkeys and even curling the bloody things (you know, that winter sport with the brooms...). Odd, but great. And occasionally very hard.
And so onto the multiplayer. And where the game in my opinion has taken a step backwards. It's still great, there's once again a huge amount of variety on offer (although flame tag has been removed to many people's annoyance) and is by far the best reason for recommending the game. But it's just not as perfect as it was in TS2. There's now an aiming cursor on-screen so all the people who complained about the lack of it before can now be content, which is all very well and fine. And they've added melee attacks (which are well balanced damage-wise). But they've arsed up the controls. Some people hated the TS2 controls for various reasons, but they've made changes which as far as I'm concerned are for the worse. Grenades now have their own weapon slot as well a seperate button on the controller. Nothing wrong with that in itself, but it means there's no room for alternate fire. In order to access it you have to press up on the directional-pad, which you can't do whilst simultaneously moving. Not to mention the fact that it's slow as hell to switch. And for some odd reason you can't move this to say L1 - it has to stay on the d-pad. It means weapons such as the remote mines are near useless in a fast paced match since by the time you've moved your thumb to push up, someone's killed you. Not good.
But I don't want to end this on a bad note. I've given the game a 4.5 and rightly so. The arcade and challenges are great as ever and most importantly so is the multiplayer. I've bitched a little about it yes, but what I've said doesn't detract much from it, it's just annoyed me and I wanted to mention it. The multiplayer is awesome and makes the game more than worth buying, it's the kind of game you may well end up still playing with mates in a couple of years time. Or you could go for another WW2 game and be done with it in a weekend... |

by jamman from , michigan, Untied States | Apr 7, 2005 |
THE GOOD: -Improved graphics, guns, and gun sounds -Story mode much easier to understand -Online is sweet -Multiplayer even better than ts2THE BAD: -Short story mode
SUMMARY: Timesplitters Future Perfect is one of the most exciting shooters around. It is by far the most fun game i have played in a long time. I may even take this over halo 2. The games story mode is fun but a little on the easy side and is fairly short. timesplitters 3's strenghth is its multiplayer. This is hours of fun playing with your friends via system link or online. there are still bots that you can add to play with. The game will take a long time to beat though, there are many challenges to keep you busy for a long time. These challenges will unlock more of the 150 characters there are, and cheats. This is the game to buy. |

The Best FPS for the PS2 so far | 4.5 0 comments |
by matt_gamer87 from Vancouver, BC, Canada | Apr 6, 2005 |
THE GOOD: -Good Storyline -Longer story mode(13 missions) -More weapons -More customizing in mapmaker -More room in Mapmaker -Split Screen Online Play -Lots of Characters and Cheats -Aiming Mode completely Fixed from TS2 -Long Missions
THE BAD: -Not very good cheats -Some challenges can get very frustating -Cant customize the D-Pad controls -EVEN MORE room in Mapmaker would be good -Nothing exciting when you finish the game
SUMMARY: Id have to say this is my most favorite shooter ive played for any system,im addicted to it.Even when you finish the game 100% it doest really get boring because you have the following options to do: Play online(Infinite Replay Value),Complete Story Missions on Hard(of course can be really hard)Make more maps in mapmaker(including story maps),Earning Plaitnums for Challenges and Arcade Leagues(if you have the patience),or just playing all the diffent modes in Arcade with unique weapons. The weapons in this game have all been greatly upgraded from the ones that were in TS2 like the plasma autorifle, cause now it is the most powerful weapons in the game(in my opinion). The only weapon that i found not to my liking was the rocket launcher because of the decrease in speed and damage, other than that i enjoy all of the 40 so weapons in the game.Story mode is a heck of alot more fun and understandable in this game than the previous with 13 very long missions, with bosses in between. The difficulty in this game is perfect on "Normal" mode, not too hard and not too easy. There are 150 different characters each with there own animation and statistics. The cheats in this game disapoint me,theres nothing too good, for example:Fat characters,big/small heads, cardboard characters, rotating heads, human gun sounds.I was hoping for infinite ammo(like TS2)or infinite health. The customization is really good for your controllers and arcade mode just like for TS2,all the same.Online play is very easy to setup and play and can be exciting and hard as heck sometimes. There are lots of challenges and arcade leagues and lots of them are pretty fun where others can really piss me off when i cant get that gold i want.I think ive covered almost everything and i would have to recommend this game to anyone who wants a good customizable shooter with a really good storyline and online play. This would have to be the best of the series in every way.Buy it you wont regret it.E-mail me at matt_gamer87@hotmail.com if you want anymore information or tips and help in the game |
