TIMESPLITTERS 2
Oh no! Not another PS2 Review! Well deal with it.
GENERAL INFO
Let's get this out into the open. Timesplitters2 (TS2) is a weird game. Original, but weird. Oh yeah, it's a First Person Shooter by the way. You play as a kooky dude named Seargant Cortez. You and your female compainion gatecrash a party upon the spacestation owned by the Timesplitters, and evil race of of beings that can travel through time with the aid of a Stargate type thingy, which is apparently powered by 9 time crystals. Just as you bust in and start capping heads, the Timesplitters escape through the stargate thang with the time crystals in hand. While the connection is still active, you jump into the force field, travel throyugh time, and set out to retreive the time crystals, thus removing the stargate's power source and ending the Timesplitter's reign of evil forever! [Deep breaths] Told you it was weird.
LEVELS
You have to travel to the 9 times zones where the crystals are being held, namely:
Siberia, 1990: A very Goldeneye-ish level set in a military base in and near a huge dam. Heaps of things in your way, including soldiers, cameras, drone guns, aliens, hybrid mutants, special forces, and zombies. Chicago, 1932: In the time of the gangstas, you get to travel through a nostalgic nostalgia, armde with tommyguns and vintage sniper rifles. Everything in a gangsta movie, but in a game instead. Notre Dame, Paris, 1895: Kooky castle rampage armed with a shotgun sound good to you? If so, you will have fun blowing away zombies and undead preists in this cathedral setting. Tokyo, 2019: The first futuristicky level in the game. A bit of stealth to begin with, tailing a hacker to the hacker HQ, doing a bit of espionage, and then shooting up the lower levels of neotokyo. Planet X, 2280: Yay. You crash land your ship on the supposed Planet X, and shoot up all the aliens and UFO's down there. I dont like this level much because of the placky, Halo-esque plasma guns. Atomsmasher Facility, 1972: Austin Powers meets James Bond. Diffusing bombs and killing henchmen in yellow suits. Swarms of henchmen in yellow suits. Wild West, 1853: Back to the time of the cowboys. Armed with a pistol that's power rivals the shotgun's, you need to bust your friend out of jail and shoot stuff up. (No fun on co-op for Player 2; they are stuck in the cell for the first part of the mission.) Aztec Ruins, 1920: Indiana Jones style boulder scene, crossbows, pygmies, ancient temples and innocent monkeys to kill. What more could you want? Robot Factory, 2315: A nasty level set in an industrial area, where killer robots (think Terminator, but skinnier) spawn out of mid air to slice your spleen. What's more, the end of level boss is an insane kid at the wheel of a 4-armed multi weaponed killing machine. Creepy.
After you have completed each level, and retreived each time crystal, you must return to the present (ie, 2401) and back to the timesplitter space station. Now you have to set the self destructo thingy and escape with your life. Each of the levels suit their time zone very well, from the gritty urbania of Tokyo to the canyon walls and mine carts of the wild west. Although you cannot save mid-mission, you can restart from a checkpoint positioned about halfway through the level, provided you reach it. The level design, while slightly flawed, is imaginative and rearely boring. The environments are not destructable, at least you can smash windows and blow up furniture and computers, but it is nothing major. I think if Eidos jacked this area up a bit, it would enhance the gameplay and give the player more descisions when it comes to tackling a certain situation. To get the time crystal in the level, you need to kill the level boss (no surprise there). The bosses can range from a single character on foot, to a chopper, a group of golems, or an insane kid at the controls of a 200 ton mincing machine. Hrmm. Time to get another thing out in the open. Timesplitters 2 is NOT a serious game. The visuals, while generally very realistic, are slightly cartoony, and the environments and objectives become more and more ridiculous as the game goes on. This by no means dampens the game's fun factor, but it may not appeal to some. The difficulty levels drastically change the missions. I just expected better AI. Instead I got extra objectives, extra parts of the level became accessible, enhanced enemy strength, optional objectives became compulsory, AND better AI. Lovin' it.
IN SHORT : LENGTHY AND IMAGINATIVE BUT OCCASIONALLY FRUSTRATINGLY DIFFICULT.
WEAPONS
Now this really is an area that makes or breaks a game. TS2 both makes and breaks itself here, but it is more make than break. I'd say about a 4:1 make to break ratio. As you could probably guess, the weapons vary greatly depening on where and when you are. Weapons include... (With short descriptions)
Luger Pistol: A small, crap gun. only good for capping unsuspecting baddies in the face or beheading the undead. Silenced Pistol: A small, crap, but silenced gun. At least using this won't have every baddie in the level running after you. Essential for stealth missions, this gun will kill in one shot, provided a headshot is acheived. Garrett Revolver: One huge mofo of a revolver. Essentially has to power of the shotgun, but with increased accuracy and bigger clip size. Double Barreled Shotgun: Great for wiping people's faces off. Okay at a range, but best where all guns should be used; point blank. Almost qualifies as an effective sniper rifle. Tactical 12 Gauge: Same as above, but with wider pellet spray, shorter range, and larger clip size. Soviet K97: Think AK47, but with a grenade launcher attachment. Doesnt even come close to the kickarseness of the MP5 from Half Life, but is a good companion all the same. Companion as a gun, you sicko. SP610 Machine Gun: This gun owns. Fires bullets so fast that it sounds more like a vacuum cleaner than a gun. TommyGun: Do it gangsta style with this beast. Less accurate that the Soviet, but with more grunt. Minigun: Fires bullets very rapidly, very accurate, quiet, big belt size, but is prone to overheating. When it overheats, it stutters and the ammo flow comes less quickly. Needs time in between burts to cool. Lasergun: Shoots lasers. Duh. Has big gap between shots, but you can hold on fire to sharge up a shot. Holding alternate fire projects a sheild to the front of you. You know what a crossbow is. Best thing is that you can recycle ammo by grabbing bolts from dead enemies and walls. Perfect for taking out those stupid bloody monkeys. Good at a long range, but you need to aim higher to compensate for gravity. Sniper Rifle: A silenced rifle with a variable scope. Surprisingly, only kills enemies in one shot if a headshot is acheived. Vintage Rifle: Same as above, but louder and older. Fists: If you run out of ammo, just bash someone. You can kill people with one blow if you punch them in the back, but only if they are unaware of your presence. Weak kidney's I suppose. Brick: Simple concept. Throw brick at enemy. While it has a short range, the brick is reasonably powerful. Only available in multiplayer though. Damn. Rocket Launcher: Launches rockets. Infinite range, but the splash damage is REALLY disappointing. So disappointing that the head guy of Eidos Interactive should be kicked in the nuts. Homing Rocket Launcher: Same as above in terms of splash damage, but with the advantage of being able to lock on to your enemies. Scifi Handgun: A handgun that shoots lasers in three round bursts. the lasers bounce off walls and nearby objects about 5 times before dissapearing, meaning that you can bounce them around corners at people, but at the disadvantcage that you are likely to cop some of the rebound. If you fire madly at a group of 6 enemies who fire madly back, you have about a million lasers whizzing around bouncing off the walls. Deadly stuff. Plasma Autorifle: A perfectly accurate, fully automatic plasma rifle with a sticky grenade laucnher attachment. The actual grenades stick, not the launcher. If you hold down fire for too long, the thing overheats and you have to wait until it cools before you can fire anymore.
As you can see, the range is fairly decent and varied. Also available are doubles of weapons such as the pistols and the mahine guns, which makes for lots of fun. More conventional weapons and less laser weapons would be great though. Oh, and the splash damage on the rocket launchers need some SERIOUS work. Another problem is that the weapon sounds are neither loud nor meaty, leaning more toward a "wacky placky" sound. The tommygun sounds like someone kicking a metal bucket repeatedly.
IN SHORT : GREAT VARIETY, BUT SOMETIMES LACKING GRUNT.
MULTIPLAYER
TS2 has a very extensice multiplayer section, but with a couple of faults. The mode selection is great. There are plenty to choose from, such as...
Deathmatch - Kill everything that aint you. Team Deathmatch - Kill everything that aint you, or your team members. Points you earn go to the team total. CTB (Capture the bag) - Steal the enemy's bag and bring it back to your base. You can only score if your bag is at your base. Elimination - Each player has a set number of lives. Once you use them up, your out of the game Virus - One person starts off infected. Last person to be uninfected wins. Pass on the virus by body contact. Flame Tag - One person starts off on fire. Spread it around to harm as many people as possible. Gladiator - Only the gladiator can score. Kill the gladiator to become the gladiator. Assault UT-style capture the enemy base Zones- Run over a zone marker to claim it for your team. The more zones your team controls, the more points you gain. Shrink - Competitor's size is based upon their rank in the round. Come last, you are ultra small, and consequently have less health and attacking power. Vampire - Your health constantly runs down. Kill someone to gain more health. Bag Tag - You get points for holding on to the bag. If someone else has it, kill them and take the bag. Theif - You don't get points for kills, but instead get points for picking up the token an enemy drops when they die. This means that although another player got the kill, you can quickly run in and nick the token. Monkey Assisstant - Told you this game was weird. If you are coming in last place, a pack of 6 monkeys armed with homing rocket launchers beam down from outer space to help you. Freakiness.
While all this is good the lack of levels drops it down a level. I mean, there are about 12, but when compared to a game like Red Faction 2, which boasts about 40 levels, TS2 looks inferior. You can customise all sorts of thing before the match. Things like difficulty, kill limit, time limit, scoring method, one hit kill on/off, weapon set, bot set, and background music are all tweakable to your liking. The range of multiplayer bots and player models is second to none. Once you have unlocked them all, there are well over 100 to choose from. Choosing a chracter model does not only change the way you look. Each character model varies in three areas; accuracy (ability to use the weapon accurately), agility (how quickly they can run), and stamina (max health limit). Each character usually has a differnt balance of the 3, being high in stamina, but low in agility, or vice versa. Some however, are all rounders, good in all areas, or just plain crap, having low accuracy, agility, and stamina. The ones that are particularly good usually need to be unlocked in a challenge or league game. you can pick your own bots, or go with a preset, and same with weaponary; go preset, custom, or recommended. Another thing that sells TS2 is CO-OP PLAY!!!!11oneoneone. Everyone love co-op. Well done Eidos.
Apart from the custom multiplayer rounds, where you set up a match, there is league and challenge mode. League is a set of pre-determined rounds, which vary in mode, weapons, enemies and levels. Depending on how you do in these levels, you are awarded a Platinum, Gold, Silver, Broze, or fail. Some levels require a gold to get the unlockable, while some only need a silver or bronze. The unlockables can be either a level, cheat, or character model. You haven't truly finished the game 100% until you have got every unlockable, and beleive me, huge case of easier-said-than-done syndrom here. There are three leagues; amatuer, honourary, ane elite. Some of the levels are frustratingly hard. For example, one level pits you against a hoarde of enemies armed with shotguns. You have to kill at least 60 of them in 4 minutes to get the gold medal, and trust me, they can hold their own and do not go down easy.
This concept will be praised by hardcore gamers, but the casual player may find thit too much to handle. Then there are the challenges, which are subtly different, and have a more arcadey feel to them. In one level, you are in a room which you cannot leave (you die after 3 seconds outside), and a hoarde of undead minions pour into the room and attack you. Toget the gold, you need 40,000 points. To give you an idea of how hard this is, a perfect headshot will get you 75 points. Again, you are awarded medals according to your performance, and are awarded unlockables according to your medals.
IN SHORT : VERY, VERY DEEP MULTIPLAYER BUT FRUSTRATINGLY HARD AT TIMES. LIKE THROW-THE-CONTROL-AT-THE-WALL FRUSTRATING.
GAME MECHANICS
Graphics - Smooth, but sometimes cartoony visuals. Great special effects, such as fire, rain, etc, great lighting effects, and good background level design. I have not yet seen a single graphics glitch. Sound - Excellent voice acting, but the guns sound a little bit tinny in places. Otherwise, all the background sound effects are excellent, but the music needs a bit of work; a bit too kiddy for my liking. Lifespan / Gameplay - This game will either last 10 seconds, or forever. Casual gamers will probably through the single player, but probably not bother with the unlockables. But if you are like me, someone who has to finish the game in every single aspect before he is satisfied, it will have a very long life. The single player game is great fun, especially on the higher difficulty levels where more of the level is accessable and more objectives are present, and the fact that there is co-op makes it a whole lot more awesome. The multiplayer, as you would expect is great fun, and the challenges and the leagues open up a new area of play. Good stuff.
THE VERDICT - THE GOOD, THE BAD, AND.... THE BAD.
Good
- Co-op mission play! - Good, challenging single player. - Huge range of character models. - Very in-depth and versatile multiplayer. - Comedy. - Great graphics. - Wide range of guns. - Good adrenalin rush in some places.
Bad
- Cartoony visuals may not appeal to all - Very difficult at times - Weapon sounds need an upgrade.
As you can see, the good outweigh the bad by at least double. Leafing through playstation magazines, I see good things.
TimeSplitters 2 - Official Playstation 2 Mag - 10/10 TimeSplitters 2 - Play Magazine (UK) - 94%
For all of you who own a PS2, and love a good FPS, get up and get this game NOW. You will not be disappointed with this one. Great value for money. (Especially for me who picked it up half price!)
IN SHORT : PS2 OWNERS THAT ARE FPS FANS NEED TO GET THIS GAME NOW.
YOU'LL LIKE THIS IF YOU LIKED.....
- Half Life - Red Faction Series - Goldeneye on N64 - The first two Quake games.

Very Fun FPS game | 4.6 0 comments |
by Dark Elite from , , Australia | Jul 16, 2004 |
THE GOOD: ~The graphics ~The game play ~The many game modes ~FunTHE BAD: ~Story is a bit weak ~A bit to cartoony for some SUMMARY: The PS2 has another great game for you guys to play, it is also very addictive. This game at first did look a bit dodgy but I looked at what it got out of the Official Aussie Mag and it got 9.3 /10 which is really good. I got the game thinking that it would just be an average game, but I was wrong, this game is awesome.
The game play is the major asset I look for in a game, as a game could have crap graphics but it is fun to play. This game however has really fun game play that will last you for a long time. There are many different modes such as Story mode, Arcade league, Arcade custom , challenge mode and map maker mode.
Story mode can be a single game or you can take 4 of your buddies and kick ass. There are only 10 missions though for you to choose from but they will take you across different time periods like the 1630's right up to the 2460's. There are some cool levels but the story line is weak as all you really have to do is find these time crystals but they get you to do all these other objectives. You might be on Earth for some of the missions but you might be on some alien worlds. On the easy difficulty there isn't much to the levels but when you go on harder difficulties the levels increase in size dramatically.
Arcade league is one of the most fun thiungs you will ever do in this game (actually you might play this mode more than the story line). There are many challenges in this mode as you have ameteur league, honarary league and elite league. Obviosly it goes from easy to hard. This mode will keep you occupied for quite some time. The different modes in this are: Death match (kill all), Team deathmatch (kill all on the opposing team, Vampire (you need to kill in order to live, you can chnge the blood lust level), Thief (Kill people and collect their tokens), Gladiator (kill the Gladiator to score points), Monkey assistant (If your losing, monkeys will appear and help you), Assault (Infiltrate a base with infinite lives and on a team, very hard), Regeneration (Your health regenerates all the time), Flame tag (Some one is on fire and you need to run away from that person or kill them with the least amount of time) Virus (Some one has the virus, like gang up tag) And more.
Arcade custom is the same ezcept you can have system link, aslo you can of course customize your settings.
Challenge mode is a mode where they may pit you in a room where you can not escape and wave after wave of infinte zombies attack you and you need to score points and survive. Awards are give out like bronze, silver etc. These give you bonuses such as cheats and new characters.
Characters are really unusual in this game as you can be a trooper to a mafia guy to a ginger bread man to a snow man to an alien and to a riot officer. There are so many characters for you to unlock and some of them are quite funny.
The cool thing about this game is that it comes with a map maker where you can make your own levels, put enemies in it and customize the light settings. This mode doesn't allow you to create out door levels but hey you can't beet a 5 by 5 metre room with 9 other bots in it with flame throwers or even rocket launchers. The music and sound are great (kind of sounds like Goldeneye). The thing is about this game is that they kind of took things and ideas from other games and shows, like Star gate and Perfect dark.
Overall this is an enjoable game that is worth your money so I suggest that if you love FPS games, then get this. |

THE GOOD: Plenty of weapons<br>Over 100 playable characters<br>Tons of modes and stuff to get stuck into<br>Fantastic multiplayer<br>Good single-player aswell<br>Story mode's music is good<br>Very good graphics<br>Laugh at people in the gameTHE BAD: Hardcore gamers only<br>No jump button<br>You'll get bored. How?<br>Needs a war level<br>Story ain't great<br> SUMMARY: This game is fantastic! This is the best first-person shooter on the PS2.I've never played Timesplitters 1 but I felt I needed to buy this game. Why, because the graphics are colourful and crisp and playing this is brill. Just whipping out a shotgun, shooting the zombie's head and then his head flys off! Great. Compared to games like Red Faction or Medal of Honour this game beats them by a few miles. Story mode is good fun if you alone but it only has ten levels. Multiplayer is superb. You and a mate running around a Chicago nightclub taking down gangsters in co-op mode is cool. Deathmatches you never get bored of with a mate because there are intense battles but very fun at the same time. The also has a arcade league mode where you do lots challenges to win awards like new maps or characters. Challenge mode is more of the same thing but it's x3 harder. Now a map editor! Flip! This tool helps you make levels of you're but its tricky making a story mode in them though. Modes are all out the way now on to weapons. There are lots of weapons in store such as the flamethrower, tommy gun, plasma autorifle and way more. This game is brilliant. The niggles aren't worth mentioning. It appeals to everyone. Run as fast your legs go to your games shop. NOW! |

Here we are, the second in the series, is it better then before? The simple answer is yes! You may be wondering how they have improved on such a good game, it will all be explained!
The gameplay is great with 10 story levels that range from Siberia to a Robot Factory that span across a large time area. 10 levels may not seem much but play it on hard and just the story will take a sleepless weekend. Stick it on easy and you will polish it off in an hour or so, but that is know fun is it? Once you do manage to complete the story there is then the challenge mode, which has well over 50 increasingly harder things to complete which some are so stupid that you will be playing them for hours. Simple thing like smashing 20 windows in less than 30 seconds using a brick! You would think no fun, but there is!
Now after all the challenges there is more, only 3 arcade leagues with 15 matches in each. In these it is another simple but fun tasks such as kill 40 people in three minutes on your own or sometimes in a team. Or there are matches where you have got to run around an arena avoiding monkeys that are on fire, touch them and it is over!
Doing all these stupid (but fun) tasks is not pointless, finish each on in a certain time and you may unlock one of over 100 secret characters that are hidden in and around the game. Or you may unlock a new level, a multiplayer game mode or even cheats what ever it is going to take you along time to find all of the many secrets the game has hidden away in it.
Maybe the best thing about the game is the multiplayer option, which can be a simple Deathmatch to a cooperative assault on an enemy base. You can change almost everything about the gameplay and better still use the characters that you unlocked in the main game all with there own special abilities. There is even an option that lets you play the story missions cooperatively doing this makes them more fun and easier.
Even with all features the graphics are almost flawless, some of the best on the Playstation Two which is hard because there is some good competition. The graphics are more cartoony then realistic but they compliment the style of play brilliantly; it gives the feeling that you need to rush and of panic. The sound is not brilliant but it is very varied so it takes along time to get annoying.
The lifespan depends on what level you play it on (Easy, Normal or Hard.) Play it on hard and it will take you ages or play it on easy for a quick finish but more replay ability. Then the challenges, leagues and the multiplayer give it near infinite replay ability.
This is one of the Playstation 2’s best games it is a must. Almost perfect in every aspect of gameplay.
10/10

TimeSplitters 2 Review | 4.8 0 comments |
by Captain Lumpy from Falmouth, Cornwall, England | Aug 11, 2003 |
Lumpy here. Been playing this game in excess of 2 weeks now and still thrilled to bits with it. A sensational environment and radical tuneage really set the mood for the story missions or for one of the many arcade games. Not only does it run smoothly with an awesome storyline the mind boggling array of game types it has to offer is... well mind boggling!
From the classic 'Deathmatch' and the strangely named 'Capture The Bag' to the insane 'Flame Tag', the deadly 'Virus' and the humourous yet lethal 'Shrink' there is a game mode to suit everyone's needs. And the mini games are fun, if a little inappropiate. In the middle of an intense shootout you can decide to start playing Anaconda if your whim so desires.
Add to that a wide variety of fun challenges (who doesn't want to shatter stained glass windows in a church and not get into trouble for it?) and a well designed reward system that allows you to unlock new characters, levels and cheats, ultimately persuading you to keep playing till everything is yours.
A co-op story mode entertains and four player options enhance this game's greatness even more, along with the stupid and weird recognition gained via the awards. Of course getting 'Most Cowardly' when fighting your mates does nothing for your street cred.
Finally throw in a map making tool, which is simple and easy to use and guaruntees hours more fun on this great game. Quite simply it is brilliant. If you like First Person Shooters, but this game. If you like different gaming challenges and experiences, but this game. And if you have the creative bug just itching to be let loose - BUY THIS GAME!

THE GOOD: - Graphics - Gameplay - Weapons - Characters - Co-op Story mode - Music - 117 playable characters!THE BAD: - Short story mode - no jump function - not enough maps SUMMARY: This game is just about perfect... its sooo close but there are only a few things that lag it right behind perfection.. The story mode is fun but the problem is its short. Could use a jump function and more maps though either way.. THIS GAME KICKS ASS! It is soo much fun to play it with friends.. good amount of weapons is a good thing oh yes and the comic mischeif. This game is fun entertaining although it may kind of diss a couple of games if you notice, but this game is still good.. This game is all good but if theres a TS 3 be assured i will try it out first hand. |

THE GOOD: - Graphics - multiplayer modes - the weapons - the time periods, like wild west, gangsta chicago, far future - the challenges are really fun and well..challengingTHE BAD: -the story is....well theres not much of it, and they promised a cool story - i want more weapons(even though the ones they included are cool) - some challenges are really impossible - the story mode is way too short and simple SUMMARY:
This a great game if you have alot of frieds over and you want to kill each other in a game, or maybe you just want to play 2 player co-operation you could do that too. Though there is almost no story in the game, at least the fun challenges kind of make up for it. IF your looking for more of a single player first person shooter, get Nightfire or REd fAciton 2. This game is best enjoyed with 2 or more people. |

THE GOOD: Everything! Mostly I would say the multiplayer mode. It way better than Halo's multiplayer, cause' TS2 has more stages and weapons and is much more enjoyable when playing with friends! Also, the MapMaker. This cool stage building tool was a really good idea!THE BAD: Hmmm... I would have to say the actual story in the one player game. It could have been alot more exciting with a more detailed story. They have us jumping from one level to the next with a differant story for each one. Not very nice indeed. SUMMARY: Basicaly, this is a great overall game! Don't worry about it being too easy to complete, cause it'll take you ages to get absolutly everything in TS2. The graphics are a joy to look at, sound and music are wonderfully crafted, and the stages couldn't be better! It is obvious that alot of work has been put into this game, and it's well worth the money if you are planning to shell out some dough on a next-gen console game. I say BUY IT, and buy it now or you will definatly regret it later! |

Best FPS | 4.8 0 comments |
by _bLaze_ from Right behind you, , | May 20, 2003 |
THE GOOD: Replay value, weapons, characters, multiplayerTHE BAD: Story Mode's not great SUMMARY: Timesplitters 2 is one of the best FPS' there is in my opinion. The other PS2 FPS' such as Quake III and Red Faction can't compare with it. There are a lot of cool characters and levels to unlock. There is a vast amount of awesome weapons to choose from. The replay value is amazing in TS2. There is so much to do and unlock. Even just playing a good old Deathmatch never gets tiring. The story mode isn't the best, but still decent and fun to play. There are a bunch of fun game modes. Like Deathmatch, Team Deathmatch, Capture the Flag, Vampire, Flame Tag, and a lot more. It's especially fun if you have 2 or 3 friends come over and play multiplayer. Story Co-op is fun, but an all out fragfest is the best.
