Trust No-One | 3.2 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Interesting plot premise, exciting battle system.THE BAD: Difficulty in exploration, lack of information on how to complete missions. SUMMARY: Anyone could be an alien. Could be the guy in the next room, or the one standing next to you. Or it could be YOU! Just kidding... OR AM I?
Seriously though, The Thing had some great promise, but suffers from a few serious flaws.
To comment on the more positive aspects first, I will say that the premise of the movie was a great idea to translate to video game format. You must be vigilant, and work to gain the trust of your squad members and that of the strangers you meet along the way, because they're just as paranoid as you are. You can earn this trust by healing them, giving them weapons, or performing blood tests on yourself in front of them to prove you're not an alien. You must be prepared, however, that all your hard work could very well be in vain, because though their fear and mistrust is totally convincing as a typical human, the instant a seven-foot monstrosity bursts out of their skin and comes after you, you'll know it was all bull pucky.
The battle sequences are exciting as well, and whenever you and/or your squad is attacked by aliens, the camera zooms slightly and changes to this nifty fish-eye perspective. Your squad members will also act very realistically, darting from here to there, crouching, attacking, and shouting out various expletives.
Speaking of realism, your squad members will sometimes lose their lunch when they see a dead body, or become incredibly spooked and will require you to calm them down or remove them from the area in question that's freaking them out, otherwise they could very well want to off themselves out of pure fear.
However, one of the downsides to this game is that there are no readily available on-hand maps to speak of, just the occasional one posted to the wall that you'll either have to memorize or copy down on paper. This makes exploration very tedious sometimes, because in the winter landscape, it's hard to tell where you are, where you're going, or where you've been, I can't tell you how many times I wandered around an area for ten minutes at a time cursing to myself, wondering what the frigg I was supposed to do next. Not only that, but you can only be out in the cold dilly-dallying around for so long before your temperature drops to dangerous levels and you start losing health, so you must find a building or enclosure to take shelter in before you can go out again.
Though they give you direct verbal instructions most of the time as to how to complete your next mission, knowing how to do it is another matter entirely. For example, in the first stage, you're ordered to drop C2 explosives in two key areas, but if like me, you assume you just need to be in the rooms and drop the explosives anywhere you please because you have no information to tell you otherwise, you're going to completely miss the translucent red squares on the wall where you're actually supposed to plant the C2.
The environments are a tad on the dull side, but I will forgive the decided lack of color due to the fact that you ARE exploring a remote winter wasteland.
In conclusion, this game again, had some great promise, and if it had been created for a next-gen console, I bet they could have worked out a lot of the bugs to create an even more fantastic title, but as it stands, you need a lot more patience than I do to get through it all. |

THE GOOD: -Great storyline -Time comsuming -Definitely takes you out of the real world -Requires 100% strategyTHE BAD: -Irritating at times -Very jumpy -Exceptionally hard SUMMARY: I loved this movie from 1982. Loved it. Kurt Russel was the man. So when I saw it for 9 bucks at movie gallery, I had to pick it up. (I actually broke my commitment with myself to only buy a game when I beat the last one ).
At first I was just confused; I had to pay attention to fear and trust, and once I started to act funny, my characters started yelling at me. Very realistic. Once I got the hang of the easy stuff, I started to realize how hard the game was. It takes a ton of strategy and you can't just shoot your way through. You must develop a very good system. For example, the only way I could beat one "thing" was if I fired at it with a sniper rifle from the balcony, got it to chase me, created a barrier of fire so that it had to go around the room to get me, fire at it with a shotgun for a while, then go down the stairs and finish it off with a machine gun. THEN, I had to lead it into a room, run around the table, close the door, wait a second, open the door and toss a few grenades in it. THEN I had to get it with a flame thrower. Took me maybe a day for that one.
The Thing is, however, an acquired taste. You can't expect to be immediately addicted. Takes plenty of time.
One more thing: Don't play it at night. I made that mistake and was walking along looking at a dead body, until the head exploded and a spider "thing" jumped out at my face. I almost filled my shorts. |

THE GOOD: ~Your interesting team members (T.M) ~Check up on T.M's emotions ~The graphics ~The atmosphereTHE BAD: ~Replay value ~Can't choose levels, unless you make a save in a different slot each time, (confusing) SUMMARY: Now this should be a game to get for your PS2, as it is a very intellegent game. At first I had never heard of the movie, it looked like an interesting game so I hired it out, and yes it was quite interesting, more than I thought, though it's not the most action pact game out there.
The Thing's story line is like the movie's, not much to it, but lots of killing and blood, that's all I'm saying. Your T.M's have an emotional state where you can check up on all the time, if you go into somewhere really creepy and dark and most of your T.M's have died, well most likely your T.M's will lose it and start shooting around the place, if you want to cool them off you can take them outside (where there may not be any danger) or just use drugs.
Your T.M's may get infected along the way but most don't say, as then they need to be killed, soon enough the monster within them unleashes and eats them, then they turn on you. SOme are brave and will shoot themselves. Interesting hey.
The atmosphere is really creepy looking and you may jump up from your seat sometimes as the shocking parts will get you. Weapons are cool, along with some handy gadgets. While you are playing the story kind of unravels.
The game has been constructed beautifly and is a great game, though if your one of those gamers where you like to play games after you have finished this is not the game, as it does not have good replay value, also you can't choose your levels, if you want a game just for a quick rental, then I suggest this game. Rent before you buy as some will like this game while others won't. |

Here is a game that was from a movie that came out in 1982 and made only a little over 3 million in the theatres. Yet it's a cult classic for horror fans. Another little trivia fact about the film. If you have seen the movie you should realize that there are no women in the entire movie. The closest thing to a woman is the voice on the computer when MacReady is playing chess. As for the game, it takes place right after the movie ended. Which I loved, since you get to see the area where the men were at and you even get to see a few familiar faces! The Creatures in the game are just like they were in the movie. It's amazing how much detail was given for this game. John Carpenter must have been proud. Since this is of course a horror game, it has plenty of blood, gore, and swearing. There were a few scenes where I looked on in disbelief. Thinking to myself "Did I just see that right?" Without ruining the scenes, let's just say that it was pretty graphic. The soldiers who help you on your missions are not robots. They can be frightened, or they can turn on you, or even become a 'Thing' right before your eyes. The game could easily be turned into a script for a second 'Thing' movie. Which I don't understand why John Carpenter hasn't even thought of making another film. They way horror movies are today, his film could be much better than say "Freddy VS Jason" was. He could go off of the game, or do something new. Which would give us fans another 'Thing' game to play. Presentation It's great! From start to finish, the action never stops. From searching out the destroyed outpost to sniping out guards in the snow. It isn't just a game about killing the creatures. You also have human enemies against you. The game has a very well written plot for gamers to follow, so you really can't get bored with the game. Unless you don't like horror games. But if you don't, then why are you playing this game? From using several different weapons, (Flame Thrower is great to use) to having to keep your men sane and alive, to trying to outsmart the creatures (In certain levels). This game is perfect for those who either loved the movie or just love horror games. I'm in both categories. 10/10 Graphics Very clean and detailed graphics for the game. The outside environment looked very sweet with the snow and the wind making things barely visible unless you were close to them. The detail given to the creatures is awesome! And the blood shown when someone died was also done very well. 10/10 Sound The music for this game is just like the movie. It's almost as if John Carpenter wrote the music for it. It sets the mood really well and gives the game a movie feel to it. Can't say much against the music. And the sounds for the weapons were also very realistic. 10/10 Gameplay This is your basic survivor horror game. You need to kill to survive. And you need to keep your teammates alive as well. Since you need a soldier for opening certain doors, or you might need a medic to heal you. Or to make it easier for you, just having an extra man to shoot the creatures. But be careful. They can turn on you if they think that you are a 'Thing'. Or they might freak out and go crazy, which is funny to watch. Or they might become infected and turn into a 'Thing' and attack you and your remaining men. The soldiers add an extra fun factor to the game since they can do several different things on the levels. 10/10 Lasting Appeal This is another game where once you finish it, that's all. No extras, or hidden items to try and find in another run of the game. But since I love horror, I played this game more than once. Movie fans will love seeing the levels and noticing the little hints in the game that were in the film. Especially the ending. All I can say is WOW!! 10/10 |

'The Thing' - Avoid it like the plague | 1.0 0 comments |
by mojothemonkey from Aber, , Wales | Jun 28, 2003 |
THE GOOD: Absolutely nothing.THE BAD: Absolutely everything. SUMMARY: 'The Thing' is quite possibly nay, definitely the worst game I have EVER had the misfortune to play and, believe me, I've played some absolute shockers in my time. When the game eventually loads (after waiting a few light years for it to do so that is), you won't know whether to laugh or cry.....although crying is advisable if you've just wasted £40 on a game that, quite frankly, is as much fun as poking your eye out with a rusty tent peg. How this game ever made it past quarantine, let alone onto the shelves, really is beyond comprehension, but it just goes to show that miracles can and do actually happen!!
By today's standards, 'The Thing' looks and plays like it's been programmed by a team of paralytic chimps on a weekend bender. With graphics no better than a 16th Century flickbook and controls similar to that of an F1 car in a vat of butter, this game isn't even fit enough to grace the Spectrum let alone the PS2.
"So what about the good bits?" you must be asking. Well, if the truth be told, you'll be hard pressed to find anything that even comes close to stimulating the joy cells in your brain. Fiddly actions, jerky movements, badly designed inventory layout, and a bug-ridden trust/fear engine, are but a few things that add to the frustrations of playing a game which promises so much but, infact, delivers nothing at all. The most bizarre aspect of this game comes in the form of bloodtesting team members to determine whether or not they have been infected by the alien gene. Samples that show up as negative will, more often than not, prove incorrect as the donator will simply mutate before your eyes and proceed to chew on your jugular vein. This leaves you wondering why on earth bloodtesting kits were included in the game to begin with if they don't even serve their purpose.
Gamers, especially those who are fans of the original motion picture, will be truly disappointed with the effort (or lack of) that Konami have put into 'The Thing' and should avoid it as they would a blood sucking extraterrestrial. The game will not only spoil your illusion of the film, but will also freeze your brain faster than an Antarctic chill ever could. As for its '15' age certificate, this game couldn't even scare a pre-pubescent child let alone a teenager. So please, for your own sanity, heed the warning and DO NOT BUY THIS GAME. If you are unlucky enough to receive a copy as a present, BURN IT and bury the evidence in a very deep hole so that it will never see the light of day again. |

THE GOOD: NOTHINGTHE BAD: EVERYTHING SUMMARY: This game could've been great but somewhere it just went wrong. The controls are terrible and it is just way to hard. Dont buy. If you want a similar game, buy Socom: Navy Seals. If your really desprete for this kind of game, wait till it gets cheaper or buy it on Ebay. This game tries way to hard to be like Navy Seals. Please dont waste your money. |

THE GOOD: pretty much everything.THE BAD: the cameras are a little funky sometimes SUMMARY: 'the thing' is probably one of my all time favorite games ever because it has a realness to it that most games lack quite a bit. one of the main factors that makes it real is your team mates actually freak out and shit (i thought it was hilarious the first time i saw one of them barfing because there was a corpse right in front of him lol). i personally think the graphics kick ass and i think its weird that people's expectations for good graphics keep getting bigger and bigger because i still compare graphics to old super nintendo games so i dont know i think they're amazing but wutever. i also think the things are scary as hell when they come after you lol. |

The Thing "worth it" | 3.0 0 comments |
by Ugochukwu from London, England, United kingdom | Jan 13, 2003 |
THE GOOD: Good athmospheric View and a good sound system.THE BAD: graphics, not that good looking but it was OK. SUMMARY: The thing is heavy and cool, talk about horror games like silent hill 2, resident evil and alien triology. i think this game rocks and kicks ass. they good aspects of this game is the enemies A.I and their capability to transform into "things" (Zombies)at any time , which scares the hell out of "The thing" fans.
you might be walking with someone during the game and later on that person will decide to transforms into something unimaginable, reviling the persons real ID. which i find suprising.
Cool story line and so much fun. |

my proper review of The Thing | 4.7 0 comments |
by moviebuff2002 from , , | Oct 27, 2002 |
THE GOOD: graphics, camera style, control, keeps the films mistrustTHE BAD: different style to film, SUMMARY: 'The Thing' is one of my favorite movies ever, so I was naturally cautious when I heard the news that they were going to make it into a video game. After all history has not left much promise in this regard with most film licences being horrible rush jobs, and this films style wasn't exactly the most video game friendly. However the more I looked into the game the better it started to look, and when it was released to very good reviews I decided to give it a try. What can I say but even next to the films high standards 'The Thing' turns out to be a fantastic game.
This is all down to 2 area's, the first being the games big selling point, the trust fear gauge which as anyone who has been looking into the game will know is the way in which you have to work with different people in a team, and that because the monster can take on any form no one trusts anyone else. Now I have to admit that I was initially disappointed in this regard because as the game started it seemed like everyone trusted me and everyone in my squad was a thing. Thankfully though this is limited to just the early levels and as you move through the game you meet people who don't know your character and so have a lot less trust in you. At one point after I took a gun from a soldier, he panicked and killed himself. I have to admit that I was more than a little surprised by this so from then on I started taking their feelings into consideration which added a whole new dimension to the gameplay. That was fine but I still had no idea which characters to treat well. I did realize that some of these people were human but because of the shortage of blood tests there was no way of knowing who. Sometimes I would even start trusting certain teammates which made me feel genuinely disappointed when one of them morphed into a thing as soon as I turned my back. This is all good news but of course the danger in this is if the game relies on this gimmick alone, but since I've already told you how fantastic the game is then you know that this is not the case.
So how exactly does 'The Thing' play? That's the question that you must all be wanting answered and it's important to answer because this is not the resident evil clone that we were all expecting. There's no dodgy camera angles, plenty of ammo and not a monster in every room. I know that this doesn't sound like a survival horror but what they've done with 'The Thing' is to build an all new form of survival horror by being influenced by movies like 'Aliens' where there will be a dead silence, before all out mayhem and thousands of creatures start attacking from all directions. This new form really helps to build the tension as after an attack you desperately search for fresh ammo, and a save point before the next attack happens. It may not sound anything like the films style, but like I said the film wasn't really suitable for a game. Anyway 'Aliens' was nothing like 'Alien' but everyone welcomed the changes in that as you should here. 'The Thing's' new style works really well and it is definitely the best action game on the market.
