THE GOOD: There are proper, Simpsons-style graphics here, which really outstrips Hit and Run's; 2D in 3D works a treat.
Hilarious cutscenes, parodies, lines, levels, etc. All delivered with the real Simpson's voices!!!
A great plot, which combines randomness with sense, if possible... Though the story starts by pure chance, our favourite family start acting accordingly and the adventure carries itself.
Proper Simpsons Weapons and Abilities, that are cool, fun, but most of all, useful- No more random kicking/ punching like that in Hit and Run!
If you enjoy easy games, this is the one for you- Your health regenerates all the time, there are Help Messages every corner, and the enemies are idiots. This is leisure gaming at a new level.
Great co-op, this is a top notch game for playing with someone else!
Plenty of references to the show, which leave you smiling as you recall the good old episodes that you have seen years ago.
THE BAD: The game is well too easy, and most of the challenge is in finding the collectibles. This is really stupid, and can leave you sailing through levels with ease- The only difficulty I met during the whole game was the final boss, and that was a mini-game!!! The Simpsons are really slow, leaving you grinding your teeth with frustration as you attempt to blast through the level under time pressure. This can also be annoying when you're searching for collectibles, combining hopelessness with snail-speed.
There isn’t too much replay value, and the small bit there is relies on collecting. Unfortunately for those who like a challenge, most of the Time Challenges are simple.
Sometimes the controls can be dodgy- I found that jumping onto poles was difficult, especially if there’s a risk of falling to your death.
Some situations are complicated hugely by camera angles- Seemingly easy jumps and the like are made hard by the view given. Sometimes you wonder what EA was thinking when they programmed them.
There is a serious unbalance in the characters- Homer and Bart have twice as much powers as Lisa and Marge, and even more levels- Marge only has three!!!
In my opinion, this game was made for co-op. Luckily, I had a brother to help me but I can’t imagine trying to juggle two characters at once, especially when the other moves for itself.
SUMMARY: Okay, firstly I have to say without a doubt that this is the best Simpsons game on the market! This is The Simpsons Game!!! EA have given a weak video game franchise a makeover, and have fixed its problems, and added what makes the Simpsons truly great. You finally have the trademark features at your disposal, from Bart’s slingshot to Lisa’s Saxophone. Unfortunately, there isn’t much free-roaming like that in Hit and Run, nor is there driving of any sort, but the game does well enough without it.
The story line is good, with jokes to rival the TV shows and twists to confuse and amuse. The game would be too easy for many, but the collectibles will baffle any gamer, no matter how experienced. At least that makes for some replay value, but there just isn’t enough first-play value. Despite its faults, this is still a good game- Intoxicatingly fun and overpoweringly funny, The Simpsons Game is a must for any fan.
