THE GOOD:
Good commentary
Graphics are very nice

THE BAD:
When punting the ball they run a little funny

SUMMARY:
Alright, I played both Madden and this. Which is better?

ESPN Football! Alright so in Madden you can set Hot Dog prices. Do I really want to do that? This is about football not about a super deluxe hotdog price!

But back to the game.. The ESPN presentation is just like on TV, and so is the ESPN music. Also before the game starts while its loading it shows each teams stats, and who they predict will win. Does madden do that? Nope. Also, at half-time you get a half-time show talking about the hightlights of the first half. Does madden do this? Nope.. Also a prime time show! Madden has none of this..

Now how about Stats? In Madden I really see stats as something useless (Offense=70 Defense=90, overall =90--for example). In madden the bucs defense seemed to not do any better than any team. Why? But in ESPN the Bucs defense is actually better. When playing as the Bucs its much easier for me to sack the QB as my defense overwhelms lesser teams. In madden its not like that... Its almost like all teams are equal! Same goes for offense-- teams with good offense do better in the passes, runs, catching it, etc (catching depends on WR)

Overall, much better than Madden.. Only reason why people think Madden is better is because they haven't played this. Nowdays anything with "Madden" on it is automatically "called" better-- even though its not true!

PS2  Football Game of the Year! 4.7

You can say that I'm a loyal fan of Sega Sports. But that doesn't mean I'm a fanboy. So I rented ESPN NFL twice with my free rental coupons before finally picking it up at GameStop yesterday.

Gameplay: 10/10

Last year's NFL 2K3 had it's share of problems. Would those problems be met this year? They sure were. Many gamers including myself were frustrated by the amount of dropped passes last year, those are gone. If it's a catch that you should get, you'll hang on. But if there's a hard hit, and it's questionable, you may or may not hold on to the ball.

It's also a lot easier to sack the QB this year. When you were able to break through the line about once or twice a game last year, the QB would usually just shake you off, that's not happening this year, as often.

Did Brady fumble? Or did his arm move forward? Not happy about the call? Throw the red flag and challenge the call! The challenge system works a lot better than I thought. And if you view the custom replay, you can't challenge anymore.

How could I forget the running? Though it's fun to just run over everybody with Ricky Williams, it's too easy. I could easily rush for about 300 yards per game if I wanted to.

There are two new modes that have been introduced this year, the Crib, and First Person Football (FPF). The Crib is basically a cooler version of Madden cards. When you complete milestones like say return a punt for a TD, you'll unlock bar stools or something similar that you can decorate your crib. It also keeps stats of almost every stat that you can think of.

FPF is revolutionary. It has never, ever been done before, until now. FPF puts you inside the player's helmets, and it's just pure madness from there. The gameplay is fast and confusing, but that's what makes it fun.
Franchise mode is still the same, except they added an e-mail system that alerts you of trades, injuries, and other important stuff.

Graphics: 9/10

The animations this year are excellent, except the running animation. They look rather stiff, and look funny, but it's fine. The tackles look fluid, and they even included gang tackles finally. They have included several cutscenes like the fans, cheerleaders, and sideline action. Though the players and fans look incredibly real, the cheerleaders and referee's could have used more work.
The ESPN presentation is just flat out fantastic. Makes you feel like you're actually watching ESPN.

Sound: 9/10

Although the soundtrack is not too great, it is very big. Includes hits from previous Sega games and such. You will also recognize the familiar ESPN tunes. Play-by-play is done by the same two people. Seems better than last year. They ditched the sideline reporter for some reason though.
You also have Chris Berman to do the Pre-Game show, half-time show, and NFL Primetime! No post-game show for some weird reason. The sounds during FPF are also great, hear the trash talking of Warren Sapp after getting sacked!

Online: 9/10

There were many problems last year like the whole infamous pausers. This year the included a pause clock and did everything they can to prevent cheaters. Although it lags sometimes even when using broadband, it's still fun. PS2 users can also create online leagues. FPF can also be played online. Roster updates are also available.

Replay: 10/10

Not much I can say, Franchise will keep you busy for a long time, not sure, but I think it lasts 40 years. Playing against friends is great and online gaming is fun.

Overall: 9/10

EA fanboys really need to see the light and at least give the NFL 2K series a chance. That's all I'm asking for. You don't have to like it, or admit to liking it. Just give it a chance.
