THE GOOD:
Good Visuals
More options than you'll know what to do with (Literally!)
Deep Franchise Mode
Good Streetball Mode

THE BAD:
Takes a bit of getting used to.
Not as easy to pick up and play as 2K2.
Still has some strange, annoying glitches.

SUMMARY:
Where to start with Sega's NBA 2K3... Well I should probably start by saying that developer Visual Concepts has made an improvement on 2K2 in most areas. But not all.

The first thing people will notice is the totally re-worked front-end, now sporting the ESPN layout and color scheme thanks to a license aqquired in the off-season. This new layout and color scheme has a surprising effect in Franchise mode, as it helps to immerse you even more so into the game.

Game modes offer your everyday season, playoffs and exhibition game modes, and the street mode also returns this year, beefed up with several new courts. The Franchise mode has had much work applied to it and now offers the most comprehensive and in-depth simulation of a basketball franchise found on any console.

A myriad of options help you determine what rules, presentation and general difficulty you wish to apply to the game. Then there are the additional 'Gameplay Sliders' which are designed to give the user complete control of the games difficulty dependent upon their skill. These settings take a while to adjust properly, but once you get them right you'll notice the difference in realism and overall fun of the game. Recommended settings can already be found on internet sites, and these can be used as a basis for you to adjust to your own ability.

When you actually get out on the court, you'll find that the visuals have improved vastly over last years offering, much due to the fact that 2K3 has been developed solely for the true next-gen consoles, and not for the now defunct (And unfortunately so) Dreamcast.

The easiest comparison to use with 2K3 is EA's NBA Live 2003. While EA have the reputation for stunning graphics, they've always been lacking on the gameplay aspect, in all their major sports titles other than Madden. Nothing has really changed this year. While EA's Live 2003 offers superior visuals, 2K3 offers the gameplay. Not to say that the visuals in 2K3 are bad. Not by any stretch of the imagination. Player models are pretty (As pretty as hulks like Shaq or Ben Wallace can be) and stadiums adequete. The whole front row is now modelled in 3D, although not to the same detail as the on-court players for obvious reasons. If you look closely, you can even see each teams mascot at the end of the court, although they usually look disappointingly static. As the game goes on, players begin to glisten with sweat, particularly obvious on the bald heads of MJ or Vince Carter. The uniforms seem to have some movement in them, for once looking as though they are not safety-pinned to the plyers skin. While the effect is not blatantly obvious, if you're the type that looks closely you will see.

Gameplay has changed in several ways from last years game. While the general controls are similar, many new animations have been included which ads a new element to the game. These animations also add a new way to play the game, as on certain shots (Layups and Dunks, mostly) you can alter your shot mid-way to get the ball round any defenders that may be hounding you. You can also now find your player diving off the court to save the ball, lobbing it back onto the court and occasionally falling into the front row.

Passing remains slightly awkward, as the game still tends to randomly throw the ball to any player if you try to use the D-Pad to direct your pass. Icon passing works far better and enables you to run plays more smoothly and efficiently.

The defensive end of the game has changed more significantly, as the AI will exploit your weaknesses with a ruthlessness never before seen in any basketball game. Blocks have become a little easier since last years effort, but still maintains realism by not allowing too many. The AI will challenge you with crossovers far more now and will spend more time looking for the open man.

The sound is easily described as 'enough'. The soundtrack is merely mindless beats that repeat themselves in the background, but they do the job well enough. A killer soundtrack isn't top of the list of priorities in a basketball game anyway! Commentary is pretty good but does sometimes get on the repetitive side. Having said this, the commentators do analyze your play and pick up on your strong and weak points, normally being correct in the points they make. On-court sounds are pretty good. You'll hear all manner of squeaking shoes and grunting players, but you'll also hear them talking, almost constantly communicating with one another. Its a nice touch and helps you to get more involved.

Overall, 2K3 is a fantastic game for anyone who wants true basketball, and is willing to fiddle with the intricate difficulty settings (Or Gameplay Sliders) to achieve an accurate simulation. Once this is done, you won't want to stop playing.

THE GOOD:
new cross over moves, life like sweating, Dope graphics the gameplay & the graphics make this the best game 4 basketball in 2002-2003!! 4get starting five and nba 2 night why the hell did they even make those games!

THE BAD:
as good as the game may be there are still some faults, big faults.

SUMMARY:
All in all this game is nearly perfect. New cross over moves franchise mode and all the new shit in 2k3. No, i've went with the live series all mi life and decided to make a change. To the 2k series. Fluid moves, crazy facial graphics bring it to life and so does the franchise mode it feels like you're in the office of jerry bus in Phil jackson's suit & tie and it feels like you're in the jersey of Kobe Bryant! The downside, game sometimes freezes in franchise mode. Then every game u played all the trades u made are deleted and you start where you saved last. The rosters are not updated so don't expect to find yao ming in this game. For you chinese gamers don't expect 2 find ZhiZhi Wang on the clippers. Two more postive things to 2k3. You can change the players skills! So u can make shaq a lousy free point shooter to a fat reggie miller with the best free throw skills. If you gamers think you're going you're going to play franchise with better players don't even think about it. The better the players skills get the higher is salary. In franchise there is a salary cap. Game play sliders change the shooting percentage of the game. So you can put for your team's three pointers all the way up and you will never miss a shot and you can put your opponents three point slider all the way down so they can make any crap from three point land.(hey, it's a game your allowed to cheat). Hope this helps in making your choice for a hoops game!

THE GOOD:
great overall gameplay, graphix, realism, it just beats all the other basketball games, until nba2k4.

THE BAD:
no key for taking charge, rosters not updated, intro movie isnt that great but who cares?

SUMMARY:
Awesome gameplay, graphix, commentary, scores are realistic, the ability to double pump in the middle of your shot is a great addition an already superb game.Diving for the loose ball, glistening sweat, these are just some of the additions that make this edition the best basketball game in the market. the only hitches are the lack of a "take charge key", and the inability to keep up with updated rosters.Intro movie isnt that great but who cares?

THE GOOD:
Graphics are HIGHLY DETAILED. The ESPN liscense adds some new detail to commentary. Cross-overs.

THE BAD:
Player movments are robotic. Shooting system is THE WORST EVER in a basketball video game. Missing 5 shot in a row 7 feet away from the basket.

SUMMARY:
ARRRGGGGGGGGG!! Visual Concepts have taken a turn for the worse. So let me start with the ESPN liscense. Because of it, commentators actually point out things that you have been doing on the court. You start making 3's and at the end of each quarter the announcers will commend it. Half Time Stat reports are actually fun since some no-name person says it for you. Graphics are as good as life itself, YOU WILL BE ASTONISHED BY THE GRAPHIC DETAIL of the characters. But graphics don't make a game good. The controls are as terrible as moldy milk. The fake pass is rarely used, crossovers are improved but utterly useless since its impossible to score a jumper with an average player. The instruction manual says to release the ball at the top of your JUMP. But when I go into practice mode, every time I do, it says bad release. You have to release the ball right when your players toe's leave the ground. Allen Iverson and Kobe are the only ones that can shoot. You will only score 11 points a quarter if your lucky. A new thing called "Game Slider" lets you customize the shooting percentage your team shoots. If you slide it all the way up, your team will never miss, NEVER. Slide it down, a ladder couldn't help you score, Which leads you to wonder, am I missing shots because my player sucks or is it because the "Glame Slider" determines my players ability to shoot. Frustrating when you miss 8 straight "WIDE_OPEN" baskets with your star player. It will lead you to simulating 14 game seasons it becomes so annoying. Off season is nothing speacial at all if you inspired to win the championship. Whats the point to going to the first round of the playoffs and losing so your stuck with a sucky draft pick. Pick up NBA2K2 and play that some more. Its good for you. NBA2K3 is for torturing German Nazi's.

PS2  Better Than Before!! 4.4

I am going to tell you this straight up, I have never EVER anticipated a game as much as NBA 2K3. Maybe it's my love for the sport, or that the series just overall owns. But 2K3 is what you call, a let down.

Gameplay: 7/10

The gameplay for this game is way better than before. We have the ability to customize the basketball players attributes to whatever we want. I don't know who would do that, but we can! The Franchise mode is probably the best I have ever seen in a video game. The Franchise is very graphical and resembles a lot like NFL 2K3. We have the option to hire and fire coaches to our liking. Each coach has a rating in three different categories that will affect the gameplay of your rookies. The better the coach, the more expensive they will be. The Franchise not only includes an excellent drafting system, but it includes the Lottery. Nothing special, but it's nice to have. Scouting college players is probably the most challenging thing in Franchise. You have to invite players to workouts, and that costs money. Once NCAA Basketball 2K3 is released, NBA 2K3 games will have the ability to IMPORT the college players from NCAA!! The game even includes Training Camp to help boost up your players, and the Pre-Season. Street ball has taken a big jump. All of the original courts are back and reworked. The courts look excellent with much more details. However, no new courts were added. We now have the option to create our own unique street team! There were two major things that really hurt the game. The first is that the Create a Player mode was a huge disappointment. It is exactly the same as 2K2 except we now have the ability to choose the player's college. The second is that the game sometimes "freezes" in Franchise. This was a huge bug in 2K2, and unfortunately, its in 2K3. The rosters are pretty accurate, all of the rookies are there except for Yao Ming and Melvin Ely. But Melvin Ely is already in the first Downloadable Update Roster. Yeah, that's right, we can download new rosters.

Graphics: 9/10

The graphics are definitely the best of all the 2K series games. The players now even have the ability to SWEAT as the game progresses. The players will start to look "shiny" once the game develops. This year, VC has also included "player shoes". Yeah, you heard me. Iverson will be wearing his Reeboks and McGrady will be wearing the "T-Mac's". VC has done a great job with the players faces. Shawn Marion now, actually looks like Shawn Marion. The hairstyle even changes. Iveron will sometimes have corn rows, and then he'll have zizzags the next game. Ben Wallace will have corn rows in one game, and he'll let is hair fro out in another. The game also includes the Lakers new white colored home jersey. I was quite disappointed that classic jerseys were not included. And the thing that really upset me, were the facial emotions during dunks. EA Sports and Live are definitely the winners in facial emotions. I have also noticed that the tattoos are off. Most of the players tattoos are faded. I can barely see Marbury's. Kenyon Martin is missing all of his tattoos. Shaq doesn't have his Superman emblem, and Bibby his missing the huge crucifix. What happened VC? The animations are extremely smooth this year. They players don't slow down when they do the "under the leg" dunk. The goaltending glitch has also been fixed. Shoot the ball and make it. Watch the replay and watch the ball go through the net. It is one of the most amazing thing's I have ever seen. The players hands actually touch the rim this year! VC has also include shoe.

Sound: 8/10

The play-by-play announcing is done by the same two guys from last year. With the new license with ESPN, the ESPN guy is here to give you the Daily Wrap Up, Half time report, and the Post game show. There are still some old lines from the original, but there are plenty of new lines. The fans seem to be more in to the game this year, and the music over the PA is great too. The greatest thing is that when you create a player, as long as their last name matches a real life current star in the game, their name will be said. The only problem is that the PA will call them by their jersey number.

Controls: 9/10

The controls are a little bit different this year. The game now has fake passing, and the pivot moves. They have also included icon switching for defence. Pressing the R3 will result in the fake pass, and move it in a direction will make your player throw the ball towards there. Shooting has never ever been tougher. We can now dive for loose balls when the roll out of bounds. Very useful if u ask me. The problem last year was high shot percentage, my shot percentage has decreased by about 10 percent. Making a good three pointer will take perfect timing and lots of practice. I make about 3/10 from the three point line a game. The players also seem to miss dunks a lot more. Some people will miss wide open dunk by themselves. The good dunkers like McGrady, Carter, Richardson, and Marion will miss because of the difficulty and if someone is in the way. That is why they have added the option to change your shot!! Let's say your off on a fast break with Carter. Shaq is standing right in the lane. You got up for the jam. Shaq jumps up to attempt the block, which he will probably get. Press square again and Carter will switch hands embarrassing Shaq. The cross over button is the same except with MANY more dribble moves. Here's a new addition to 2K3. Marbury is dribbling down the court. He does a quick cross over on Fisher getting by him with ease. Kobe jumps up to pick up Marbury. Press the circle button again and watch Marbury spin around Kobe breaking his poor little ankles.

Challenge: 10/10

The game has the same three different difficulty levels: Rookie, Pro, and All-Star. Those who played 2K2 should be able to play at the Pro level. I started playing All-Star after about 3 games. Guess what, the game now has "Game Sliders". We can now customize the game however we want. Let's say Ray Allen won't stop making those 3's. Just go to Game Sliders and lower the "3 Point %". Let's say Kobe Bryant keeps on bricking his 3's. Just higher the slide. So the possibilities are endless.

Replay: 10/10

Not much I can say, Franchise will keep you busy for a long time. The Franchise will last for 30 seasons. Have fun!

Overall: 9/10

The game is overall good. I said above it was a disappointment. I guess I just expected way too much.
