Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater | 4.8 0 comments |
by Delexo from Peterborough, , England | Apr 24, 2008 |
THE GOOD: An intriguing, move like storyline. A good mix of fast and slower paced action to suit all gamers. The immense detail into the whole game graphically. A large variety of camouflage to use to stay hidden from the enemy. The sound is very lifelike, from birds squawking in the distance to humans treading on ground.THE BAD:
The camera can become very fiddly at times. Past knowledge of the game may be needed to understand it fully. The storyline is more designed for adults rather than minors. Newcomers to the game may find it hard to enjoy it.SUMMARY: With the hugely successful Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty on their record, Konami have a tough task in improving upon perfection. Many will be surprised to see that the latest metal Gear Solid is set before Sons of Liberty which leaves many lose ends not tied up. So, will the new Metal Gear cash in on Sons of Liberty’s success? So far, it looks to be a yes.
Hideo Kojima is well known for his spectacular plots and Snake Eater certainly lives up to that. You play as Naked Snake and you find yourself in the heart of a dense jungle in the Soviet Union. The game is split into two parts, the first being short introductions on events, where you have to help rescue a scientist who has been working on a new type of tank that is able to fire missiles. However, things do not go according to plan for Naked Snake and his mission is a failure. The second part, which is a lot longer, finds naked Snake back in the jungle, back to rescue the same scientist. The plot is rich in intriguing mysteries and will keep any Metal Gear fan entertained. Though it does not answer all the questions Sons of Liberty left us with it certainly gives us more knowledge on the events that we know happen later on. The detail to the backgrounds of each character will leave you speechless. The amount of effort, time and dedication put in to every individual character is quite breathtaking.
Snake avoids his enemies by blending in. Snake Eater’s gameplay is probably one of the best on the Playstation 2. It’s relatively simple, analogue sticks to move above, square to shoot, R1 to aim/first person view and X is the action button. It’s very smooth and you’ll rarely have pauses in the game as you wrestle with your controller trying to work out how to aim. Taking aim at a enemy requires you to go into First Person View which requires you to think tactically and not just run straight into the open with all guns blazing. This makes the game become very hard (especially during the latter parts of the game) as the enemy AI is very clever. It’s best to stick to what Snake does best, being sneaky and taking out enemies one at a time but sometimes, you’re left with no choice.
The sound in Snake Eater is something that usually gets overlooked, but certainly not in this review. Everything sounds so lifelike; from the sounds of the enemy guards trudging their way through the long grass to the sound of the bullets hit someone in the chest. It will send shivers down your spine. The voice acting on the game is also, extremely good. Many old faces (or voices as the case maybe) return such as David Hayter, who voices Naked Snake, Josh Keaton who provides the voice for Revolver Ocelot and various new stars. The quality is strong and you’ll certainly be given that 60’s authenticity.
Now onto the eye candy, the graphics on Snake Eater are second to none. They really are a piece of artwork which should be cherished. Bloods pours out of a dead guard’s chest as he lies crippled on the floor after finding himself on the wrong end of a well directed snipe. Every gun looks as if it has just been taken from the factory it has made in. Everywhere you go, you’ll be lost to a world of stopping a staring at your surroundings and wondering how the hell did someone makes something like this so beautiful. You’d have a tough time deciding whether this was reality or not, that is for sure.
The simple camo index tells you how easy to see you are.
As stated earlier, you play as Naked Snake. Many fans disliked playing as Raiden in Sons of Liberty, calling him too camp for their liking. And they’ve got exactly what they’ve wanted this time around. Naked Snake’s is exactly what you’d expect from any action hero. He’s got the moves, the girls and even a bandanna. It’s obvious you cannot get much better than that. Onto the more serious topics, Snake’s character is very intriguing. He doesn’t trust many people, preferring to keep himself to himself however he learns a few lessons during his time in the Soviet jungle.
Lastly, onto the lifespan. With various ways to complete the game and a lot of difficulty settings to be played on, it has a very lasting appeal. It’ll certainly keep you entertained for a good 3 or 4 months. Snake Eater’s solid gameplay will make you come back for more and this is just another reason why Konami have had such a successful game. Fair play to Hideo and Konami for making a very addicting game.
Overall, Snake Eater is certainly a game for any Metal gear fan. Though newcomers to the series may find it hard to understand exactly what’s going on, it’s worth your time alone just for the gameplay. Simple controls mixed with some intense actions. It certainly is a game for any Playstation 2 owner. |

THE GOOD: - Storyline - Graphics - The new Cure system - Camouflage - Amount of GameplayTHE BAD: - The camera views SUMMARY: Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is an absolute must-have for any Action/Strategy game fan. A riveting storyline, amazing graphics and the amount of game-play and strategy making required for this game are what make this game one of the few games that have received 10 out of 10 in most gaming magazines. Introduced to this new installment of Metal Gear Solid is the cure menu and also the camouflage option. Throughout the game, if you get shot, you have to dig the bullet out with your knife, if you fall from a high tree or hill you will break your leg, and if an enemy soldier stabs you or slashes you, you will need to stitch yourself back up. In this aspect of the game, it is quite realistic. The other important feature to the game is the Camo Index. To help you in sneaking through the jungle, you can change your camouflage to suit the environment. Say you are in the mountains that are mostly dirt and rock. You can't sneak around without being seen in a jungle camouflage. You can then go into the Menu and change your camouflage to suit the environment. This is a really handy feature, since you're not in an enclosed building like in the other MGS games.
There are many more features throughout the game that you will have to find out about yourself by getting the game. I give it 5 out of 5. This is a must have for anyone that is mildly interested in action games. |

THE GOOD: -Characters
-Graphics
-Storyline
-Ties Together Questions From The Other Metal Gears
-WeaponsTHE BAD: -Absoloutely Nothing SUMMARY: Alright guys let me start off by saying this is my first ever review, and second that I only review good games so you know what that means. Yes Metal Gear Solid 3 Snake Eater is a terrific masterpiece, this it one of the best games I have played in the whole series. Let me go into the main story of MGS3:SE where you start your journey, you are a mercenary by the name of jack A.K.A. (Naked Snake) hired under the supervision of fox to infiltrate through the jungles of Russia to rescue professor sokolov from creating a doomsday device capable of leveling entire nations. But as you go to rescue sokolov the plot thickens as past allies turn on you, and as you are faced to assassinate your mentor, rescue sokolov, and destroy this doomsday device A.K.A. (The Shagohad). Yes that is the main plot, and might I include that this is a prequel to the MGS series that will answer questions left unanswered from the previous metal gears. Ok now we can go on to what new has been added to this legendary series.
We now have a new fighting system called CQC A.K.A. Close Quarters Combat, which allows you to dismantle your enemy with stealth and raw power. Next in line is the health system which has been added to show any injury snake has sustained during combat, or during own personal mistakes. With this new health system you can cure any injuries snake has received so that he can recover full health and be ready for the journey ahead. Third in line is the camo system, which allows you to blend in with certain environments to hide against enemies and certain bosses. It is shown in the upper right hand corner of the screen on how well you are hidden from enemy sight. Fouth in line is a stamina system, which acts as endurance to how much energy you have to fight. It is below the health bar, and will diminish over time as you walk around, get hurt, eat poisonous food, or if you wear certain camouflage. Fifth is which I mentioned in the fourth is food. Yes you are able to hunt animals, fruits, vegetables, mushrooms, and depending on certain plants you shoot you can get health supplies to help heal your injuries. The food basically recovers your stamina bar depending on the type of food jack likes, and can be used to even kill or knockout enemies depending if you throw a snake you got non-lethally, or if you throw a mushroom that induces sleep. That covers the huge supply of new features added, apart from small one I may have forgot to include. Now as for some minor up grades the graphics are nicely improved, the weapon arsenals are bigger, a great cast of characters, and the bosses are tougher. As for flaws, I did not find any but alot of people complain about the camera views. They are different then MGS and MGS 2, but they aren't too bad. Finally the major upgrades, the storyline is definitely a major upgrade because it is just so good, it can leave you sad, happy, or simply amazed. I also included that it ties everything together because it answered alot of questions that they had left unanswered in previous metal gears. Now on to my final opinion. You should definitely buy metal gear solid 3 snake eater because you will be renting it again and again because it is so good. |

Really good, but the story is so good, that I'm left wanting more background | 4.9 0 comments |

THE GOOD: The story is really deep and interesting. The characters are all fantastic and fascinating. The voice acting is superb, and the graphics are the best you can hope for on PS2. The many movies in this game make it feel like a movie with a video game slipped in. (in a good way). The weapons have a nice variety, but this really isn't a game about guns. Sneaking, and using your suroundings is the fun part of the game. Obtaining and trying out ever camoflouge and mask is also lots of fun, especially because your character continues to wear what you put on him just before a movie sequence, during the movie.THE BAD: My favorite character (won't say who) turns out to be much less innocent, and young, ect. as I thought, but the ending is still incredible. The Cobras, a team of bosses that have a great potential backstory, get very little explanaition, aside from the basics. SUMMARY: If you are capable of playing games with moderatly complex controls, you must try this game! |

Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater | 5.0 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Graphics, Story, Characters, Music, Voice-Overs, Overall Sound QualityTHE BAD: Nothing really SUMMARY: Wow, I can't believe I haven't written a review for this yet. First of all, I'd just like to make it plain and clear that this game more than lived up to all the hype that continued to build as the release date came closer. First of all, the change in environment was brilliant by Hideo Kojima.
The jungle could not have been pulled off any better. The designers really put a hell of a lot of effort into it, and it really shows. From individual blades of grass to the sounds of birds chirping and other strange animals making noises off in the distance, the environment designs and sounds are practically the definition of perfection.
That isn't to say that the indoor areas haven't been improved from Metal Gear Solid 2. The indoor areas of the game look just as good and realistic as the jungle. Tiny little cracks in the walls, rats, and bugs crawling on the walls are just a few examples of how much detail and effort went into making this game.
The story. . .Man oh man the story. Well, if you've played a Metal Gear Solid game, and even if you haven't, you'll probably know right away that Metal Gear Solid games are practically known for their amazing stories. The third edition in the Solid series is definitely no exception. With one huge plot twist followed by another, this game has a story that will definitely stay on your mind hours, even days, after you've beaten it. And with, easily, the saddest yet most inspiring ending I've ever seen in a game, this ending will definitely at least put a lump in your throat.
As for characters, well, although the previous games went into depth with more characters, the characters who do have their backgrounds checked in Snake Eater are amazing. But, one specific character will easily take the title of Best Character in Snake Eater. Anyone who plays the game will know, so if you'd like to know who, play the game, and once you've finished, you'll know. I guarantee you.
Music, as always, is great. But hey, what else do you expect from the Metal Gear Solid series? I can't think of a better song to put in the ending credits than StarSailor's "Way To Fall". After witnissing one of the single greatest endings in video game history, "Way To Fall" is just perfect. And not to mention all of the in-game music. Of course, near the end, when all the action really hits its high point, the music does too. Harry Gregson Williams did an absolutely perfect job with the music in this game, of course, after Sons Of Liberty, perfection is exactly what I'd expect from him.
And last, Voice-Overs. Basically, if you've ever played a Metal Gear Solid game, you'll know right away, it has some of the best voice work you can ask for. David Hayter, as always, fits Snake perfectly with his deep and gritty voice. And the others all do exceptional as well. Josh Keaton as Revolver Ocelot and Lori Alan as The Boss are two of the best in the game, right at the top with David Hayter as Snake.
In conclusion, I'd just like to get one final message out, if you haven't played this game yet, you have got to, now! I've just explained a couple of the game's strong points. I can guarantee you will not regret it. Once you play this game, you'll instantly be sucked into the Metal Gear Solid world, just like I was when I first played Metal Gear Solid 2.
Final Rating: 5/5, easily. |

THE GOOD: Almost all of it, the Camo is pretty good, the weapons, the areas, the animals etc.THE BAD: Well, sometimes it takes too many shot to kill someone, like lets say you shot them four times in the leg, you have to shoot them in the chest 4 more times to kill them. One more thing, when you shoot the machine gun, it goes all over the place so you can't even aim much. SUMMARY: This is really good game, You have to cure yourself when you get shot, you have to catch animals when you're hungry. You get alot of weapons, there are a lot of fun things to do. There is a new CQC, which is really good. It allows you to grab and throw them down, it allows you to grab someone and use them as a shield, you can make them tell you secrets, and you can slice their throat or break their neck..... there isn't anything bad really about this game, there are cool traps that you have to look out for and there is Cool bosses like the fury which is awesome. This game looks so real, you won't believe it.... there is some funny stuff like throwing people off a moutain lol. So I'd give it a 4 out of 5 because some times it will get boring like when you break out of prison.. it's worth 40 bucks but it's about 20 now.... There is a new one with extra coming out soon for 50 though.... All I have to say last is, it's one of the best games I ever played, awesome graphics, cool weapons, cool animals, good boss fights, the new camo index, the CQC, the areas, and the story. Its very hard to find anything bad about it, you can take 2 different ways, the stealth way and be sneaky and hide alot or just run through it and blast away which is hard to find both of those in one game.

THE GOOD: -Graphics
-Camaflouge System
-Food system
-Story is Great
-More Stealth moves and Close-Quarter Combat
-New environment
-Cure System
-Its Metal Gear!THE BAD: Out of the many, many times that I have played this game, I've only found one bad thing, the camera view, but it will be fixed in subsistence. SUMMARY: Graphics - 10/10
These graphics are awesome. One of the best I've ever seen for the PS2.
Sound - 9/10
The sounds are great. The gunshots, the bushes, the footsteps, everything!
Gameplay - 10/10
What can I say. Anyone who has played other MGS games will love this. It is so much better. There are some new moves for CQC(Close-quarter combat) You can threaten enemies and they tell you tips and such, you can slit their throat, throw them on the ground, and even use them as a human shields so that other enemies wont shoot at you while you can shoot at them. Now you have to hunt and eat to survive. And also cure yourself whenever you are injured. And there is also a camoflauge system to blend in with the environment so that enemies can't see you.
Replayability - 9/10
There are many things to get and unlock which keeps you playing over and over.
Story - 10/10
As always, MGS always brings great twisting stories that you never expect what is going to happen.
Overall - 10/10
What can I say. THIS IS ONE OF THE BEST GAMES I'VE EVER PLAYED EVER!!! If you like stealth games and similar ones, or you just loved the previous MGS games, this is the game to buy!! Though I would wait for MGS3: subsistence which is the same game but with new and better features. |

THE GOOD: - Graphics - New, different environment - Storyline - Awesome stealth-action entertainment - Able to blend into environments better - New food system, where you have to fight for survivalTHE BAD: - Cutscenes are sometimes long and boring - Camera problems can be a pain - You have to occasionally worry about your health/stamina which can be a pain when you're just trying to have fun SUMMARY: At first, I never really liked much shooting games at all, but I did sort of have a thing for stealth gaming and shooting at the same time. I was coerced into trying MGS2, and frankly, I was quite surprised what I found. That being said, i then decided to try out Snake Eater without hearing much from it, just because I liked the previous ones a lot. When I tried this one though, I didnt think it was as good as past games like Substance for instance, but it still had its strong points here and there.
First of all, the story was just great. I liked it a lot and that combined with the gameplay, just kept me going and wanting to play more and more. The graphics were also amazing because they make the game look real at a new level, and it gives the game a better look. There is also a new environment, which is the jungle where you have to kill snakes, and other things like that for food, which gives the game a better nature feel to it.
On the bad side now, the cutscenes. They really sucked because sometimes I got bored there sitting and hitting the "X" button till everyone finally did shut up. Once they even gave me such a headache that I felt like I was playing Xenosaga or something. Other than that, the environment thing was okay, but it often got on my nerves. I was used to the regular feel to the MGS series, but now that you had to be careful of what you eat and when you eat it. You also had to watch your stamina bar, which kind of made me dislike the game itself just because of that element.
All in all though, its a solid game. Its still quite fun when you get into it, so I would say its a.. rent or buy, depending if you like shooters. |

THE GOOD: An excellent plot as usual, unique game unlike any other action game, great graphics, many things that can be used to your advantage, many weapons, CQC (close quarters combat), strategy adn stealth ar a big part.THE BAD: literally nothing! and im trying to think of something that is bad but i seriously can't think of anything bad..............................................nope, nothing. SUMMARY: this is another great, unique game that captures teh feeling of a CIA field agent. using stealth strategy throughout the game to complete it well is a great aspect of the game. many different weapons with different uses. eat wild animals, cure your gunshot wounds, and sneak past the enemy to survive this encredible action game. there isn't really anything bad about this game. and its kind of strange to say such a thing because it is rarely said by anyone. GET IT! |
