THE GOOD: - You make a team from scratch - Play in 6 of the best leagues in Europe - Manage everything within the staff, from members to salary - Full Match or Quick Mode: How to watch your gamesTHE BAD: - Bad commentator - Can't jump the long introduction sequence SUMMARY: Let's Make a Soccer Team is a good soccer manager game from Sega. You basically make your very own football club, and take the lead as Chairman. But, you also have a rival, with his very own club, who will try to take the league trophy from you.
FIRST STEPS
The very first thing you do in this game, is selecting your own name, your home league, your home city, your team colour, secretary, and attacking style. After doing this, you are briefed on the fact you have to win your next three matches in a play-off, or your team will be sold and it'll be Game Over. When you have won these matches, you can edit your team kit, emblem, and club name. For the first time, you meet your rival. He has bought his own team, and will forever compete with you in the race of becoming the world's best club.
GAMEPLAY
Seeing as how this is a manager game, you will not be playing the matches yourself. Therefore, the only thing you can do (which is way harder), is control your club's very single action. This includes training, finding players, developing merchandise, and manage your staff. This is a very well done part of the game, and there is surely nothing you'd miss. When a match is on, you have to select your line-up. Your standard line-up is managed in training mode, but you can edit anything before a match starts. You have to choose a captain as well as those to take set-pieces. How your team plays is affected by anything you do, even who is on your bench as substitutes.
Your staff:
Your staff is the most important part of the game: The outcome of every match depend on them. But the players aren't your only staff. You have the manager, assistant coach, physical coach, goalkeeping coach, and youth manager. You can have four ACs, PCs and GCs. The recommended and default mix is 2 ACs, 1 PC and 1 GC. To obtain players, you either have to find free agent players on the transfer list, find purchaseable players on the transfer list, or make an offer on any other player in the world. If you do the last, you will receive a mail later from the owner of the player, who will try to negotiate, accept or decline. Note that players bought will come to your club in the next transfer window, but free agent players will arrive the next week.
Training:
Training, which is vital to keep your players improve, is an important factor. To set the training schedule, you access the training screen and set it from there. Note that you don't have to access this screen to train: Players train by themselves whenever they are set to do so. Training has pros and cons too: The pros are, of course, that your team will have better results from it, but the cons are that they will become tired over time, and they may get injured too.
Finances:
To get money, you have to win matches. Your money is spent paying salaries, building facilities, and buying players. It is also used to develop merchandise; merchandise is sold to fans and is your gain. The number of merchandise you can develop varies depending on your facilities, more precisely your financial office. You may develop kits and flags among other merchandise.
GRAPHICS AND COMMENTATOR
The graphics could be done better. The crowd does indeed look like cardboard, and the players may appear unnaturally built, but as it is a manager game, graphics are not the most important part.
The commentator, Alan Green, is, as him name applies, green at the field of commentating. He often describes another match, says that the most perfect goal was an awful shot, and says that a shot which was way off target is the best shot you'll ever see. He is one of the reasons to change to Quick Mode. However, you can swap between different commentator languages, for example German Jurgen Bergener.
AUDIO, MUSIC
The 90's-like music this game features, varies from being a relaxing tune to being your most hated soundtrack. Sometimes, it makes you wanna sleep, other times, it makes you wanna break the disc and throw the pieces out of the window. There is a wide collection of songs, and you can listen to any of them under the Options section.
OVERALL
This was my first manager game, and I thank it for making me like the genre. I recommend this game a lot, because it is both funny and it has that factor which makes you wanna go on for another season. I have only one thing to say, Let's Make a Soccer Dream? 3.7 for this good game. |
