Grand Theft Auto Turns 3D | 5.0 0 comments |
by BF Gangsta from Hartlepool/C, , England | Feb 2, 2006 |
THE GOOD: Everything about this game is great, one of the very few games that lets you free roam an entire city using; cars, trains, boats. A great story and a legendary mute character.THE BAD: Nothing much to say here, mabye how you only get ten weapons, but you really can not complain about that, when all you realy need is ten, and each one does it's job perfectly. SUMMARY: This game will go down in gaming history, it is one of the best games ever made. You follow the story of Claude (Fido) Speed, a mute nameless character (until GTA 2 and GTA: San Andreas, help us find out his real name), who has been betrayed by his very ex girlfriend, she puts two bullets in your face, but you manage to survive, but things get worse when you are facing time in prison, anyway, you manage to escape the friendly services of the police and make a new friend. You now have a whole city to explore, Liberty City, the worst place on earth, and can blame it, car jackings, murders, loads of high name gangs at war, and you are in the center of all that. You can choose to take missions from these gangs or explore the city, you must however, complete each mission to progress to other missions and unlock more parts of the city (unless you use cheats and tricks). When you play this game, you will notice a living city, that turns to day and night, the weather changes, people and cars are always on the move, and it is up to you to jack one of these cars to get from place to place faster, but watch your wanted level, the more people you kill the more wanted you become, you will deal with cops, S.W.A.T, the F.B.I. and even the Army, luckily there are a few ways to clear your wanted level. Also be on the lookout for a ton of extras and side missions, collecting hidden packages, stunt jumps, vigilante missions and ambulance rescue missions. This game is huge, and you will spend months on this game, get it now. |

THE GOOD: Innovative, fairly well executed, beleivable, nice cheat codesTHE BAD: Realism problems, among other things SUMMARY: Aside from Mario and Pokemon, Grand Theft Auto is the biggest gaming phenomenon of all time. Gamers are rabid about it. Critics praise it at every turn. Celebrities like Dave Chappelle and Redman name-drop it. Policitians like our good buddy Joe Lieberman damn it to hell. But is GTA III, the game that started it all, worth the hype?
In a word, no. It's a solid game, but it by no means deserves the Gold Award EGM gave it when it first came out. You play as a faceless crook who escaped from prison, and wants to revive his career in organized crime. This means waging war with rival gangs, doing driving and shooting missions (among others), avoiding the police, and optional missions to earn some extra cash.
First, the good stuff: The game itself is enormous and sprawling, spanning 3 well-designed city subdivisions with countless streets. The free-roaming game design and mission-based gameplay (which is what earned it the critical acclaim)is an excellent idea. It's fun to simply drive around and explore for hours on end. The mafia movie feel of the game and storyline adds a really nice cinematic touch. And the real-world touches like the hilarious NPC one-liners (In the navy!) and radio stations make everything very immersive.
But the flaws come popping out of nowhere when you least expect it. Everything in the game feels really vulnerable. It's a bit too harsh on realism and dying. (maybe for realisms sake?) The sports cars, in a word, suck. They're far too flimsy and easily damaged, and if you use one to escape from the cops, it'll most likely blow up before you manage to get a good hiding spot. The game gives you all these wonderful weapons to play with: baseball bat, pistols, uzis, grenades, Molotov Cocktails, 2 types of machine guns, flamethrower, sniper rifle, and rocket launcher. Unfortunately, if you actually try to USE any of these to try and kill people, you'll take too much damage too fast, or alert the cops and trigger a nasty chase. To get the maximum amount of fun out of the game, you HAVE to use the cheat codes (which I'm betting is the main reason people still play it). Oh, and you also can't swim or explore the insides of most buildings, for reasons unknown. Which is ridiculous for a game that prides itself on realism.
Everyone should play it, if only to see the game behind the fuss. Just remember, don't believe the "best game ever" hype. |

THE GOOD: Good graphics Good weapons It is GTA Decent missions Brilliant drivingTHE BAD: Shooting Will you play this nowadays? SUMMARY: Grand Theft Auto 3 is the first Grand Theft Auto game to reach the Playstation 2. It started of on the PC and was good. But now has the progressed any further?
Yes, of course it has. The biggest change is the fact you now have 3D graphics rather than those chunky 2D graphics. You now play in a third-person perspective and you can get a better feel of the city and the random violence.
It Grand Theft Auto 3 you play as a mute character named as... I don't know. His name is never actually mention but people say he is Claude, Fido or even Grand Theft Auto: Vice City's main character, Tommy Vercetti. He is just about ok as a main character but the that he doesn't talk can irritating at times.
In Grand Theft Auto 3 you pick up missions from various people. These missions may include taking out somebody, picking people up and taking them to certain destinations or even picking up an item and bring it back in one piece. The missions are incredibly varied and all of them are fun. The driving is excellent while on the other hand the shooting is funtional.
To drive a vehicle all you have to do is to walk up to it and hit the triangle button. Your character will throw out anybody inside the vehicle, jump in and drive around Liberty City. Another interesting aspect of Grand Theft Auto are the coppers. If you commit a crime when a cop is watching you then the police will go after you. There are six different levels of justice. From police just wanting to arrest you to the military getting on your ass.
The shooting is ok at best. You lock-on with R1 and shoot with the circle button. But the camera is crazy and you can't see who is shooting at you or anything like that. There are a decent array of weapons such as pistols, M16s, uzis and more. You can buy these from gun shops too.
Grand Theft Auto 3's lifespan is great the missions are tough and there are loads upon loads of secrets to find.
Overall Grand Theft Auto 3 is a great game which has a few bugs in it here and there. Just get it and be happy. Even if you are blowing up police cars with a pump-action shotgun. |

GTA III | 3.0 0 comments |
by Drop To Zero from Obernburg, NY, USA | Dec 30, 2004 |
THE GOOD: Good weapons Rag Doll effect cheat kicks assTHE BAD: I don't like the environment, I don't know why. I just don't find it as moving as SA or VC. I don't like the cars. I don't like the storyline at all. The soundtrack is awful. SUMMARY: I think they made this into a test run cause the game really wasn't that good at all. It did envolve into something great today, but this particular GTA I didn't like.
The city - Liberty City - it looks a bit like New York. Now, you'd expect me to like it since I'm a mark for people, movies, and games that take place or come from New York. But I just didn't like the environment. It didn't really have..excitment. I don't know how to explain it. Now the storyline, you start off as the typical guy with no name and no tounge. So yeah, it gets kinda boring when your guy doesn't talk. I silent but violent character is good, but no talking gets boring. The storyline, it's just confuzzling if you want to put it that way. You start off and go to some guy named Luigi. After him you start doing work for people of the Mafia. The storyline continues till where you part from the Mafia and start to do missions from the Yakuza, and then you do more stuff. Eventually, you get to where you have to confront the main baddie in the game - Catalina. I didn't get the storyline at all. It just seems he's going to a bunch of people to get some money, and then all the sudden confront the main baddie. There doesn't seem to have any flow. And word of advice, keep the radio off, the soundtrack absolutely sucks. |

Probably the most over-rated game in the PS2s history. | 2.9 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Pretty good graphics. Very long story, and somewhat decent setting.THE BAD: Awful soundtrack, Autos and other mobiles are definitely unrealistic when it comes to handling and everything. Glitches. SUMMARY: There is no question that GTA III is a definite one to own in really anybodys collection, although it didn't belong in mine. In my opinion this is really just another shoot-em'-up, beat-em'-up game that has been done too many times to count. The graphics are absolutely fantastic, but too many glitches, and too quick of a time stretch hurts this game in many ways. Even though there is a wide selection of radio stations that suits most genres, some of the songs are awful, and the commercials are ridiculous. Some really ridiculous missions as well. GTA3 is a worthy game to pick up and rent, but I don't think this would be a smart idea to buy. |

Transition to 3D done very well | 4.7 0 comments |

THE GOOD: New 3D world done very well Missions Tons of things to do besides the missionsTHE BAD: A few annoying glitches that can prevent 100% completion SUMMARY: GTA III was the first Grand Theft Auto game to be done in 3D instead of the old top-down view. Some people, including myself, were sceptical about just how well this transition would work out. As it turns out, it was done extremely well and this game turned out to work very well and was highly enjoyable.
The game starts out with your character (dubbed Fido by many) being transported over a bridge by the police when an explosion destroys the bridge and sets you free. You are then given a simple task of driving to a location with another person to start you off in the GTA world. Not an exciting first mission but it does allow you to get a good feel of the way the game handles. Soon though you move onto bigger and better crimes.
As far as weapons go you only find basic ones such as a baseball bat and pistol to start off with. There is a shop called Ammunation where you can buy weapons, but at the start they only have a pistol. Later in the game you get access to machine guns and a rocket launcher which come in handy when you need to destroy things in a short amount of time. There is also armour and health located around the city as well as adrenaline which slows everyone else down to give the effect of you speeding up. It’s almost a “Matrix effect.” As you collect hidden packages you will find weapons starting to appear outside your safe-houses. For every 10 packages you collect another weapon will appear. This is very handy as you can stock up every time you save a game. The more packages you collect the better the weapons become that appear. Also doing “vehicle missions” will put other items out there. Pressing R3 in a cop car, fire engine, ambulance or fire truck will activate special missions which vary for each of the vehicles. Doing well enough in each of these will give you access to other items such as armour and health outside your safe houses.
There are still killing sprees you can go on, called “Rampages” in this game which can include things from destroying a certain amount of cars to killing a certain number of people in a short amount of time with a certain weapon. There are also car ones where you need to run down people in a certain amount of time as well.
At the start of the game you can only access one island of the 3 in the game. Eventually, through a mission, you work your way to the second one and, again through a mission, over to the third island. Knowing your way around is important as many times I was being chased by the police and needed to find health or weaponry but got lost. Once you know your way around things become a whole lot easier and working your way towards mission objectives becomes a lot easier when you know where you are going.
Besides the main storyline missions there are also side missions for you to do which can usually be accessed via a payphone. This usually gives you a bit of extra money to spend. In the stats menu you will see various statistics such as number of people killed and how many missions you’ve done as well as some more unorthodox ones. The percentage completed one is right at the top. Doing things like completing missions and finding hidden packages will push this nearer 100%.
There is one glitch in the game which randomly occurs but is extremely frustrating as you only find out what it is near the end. A clan called the Purple Nines sometimes does not exist in the game but they are only on the third island. Since one of the later missions includes killing them you can’t do it of the glitch occurs. If this happens you can’t complete the game 100% which is very annoying. It happened to me once and I was so frustrated I haven’t actually played this game since. I got to 95% complete but once I found out I couldn’t do it I gave up on the game and it’s been gathering dust ever since. Another thing is that cars randomly disappear at times. Just because one went past you, doesn’t mean that it will be there when you turn to see where it went. Also when you get a rare vehicle, there seems to be some sort of code in the game whereby that vehicle suddenly pops up all over the place and about 20% of the population suddenly drives it. This can be frustrating at times.
But that is only a few glitches in an otherwise brilliant game. There are just so many things to do in this game that you can play it over and over again. Whether you want to try more missions or just kill people randomly and take on the cops there’s usually something to do to suit your mood and all in all I was extremely impressed by the way this game turned out. |

Trendsetter. With Style. | 4.5 0 comments |

THE GOOD: At the time, the graphics were second to none, the sheer size of Liberty City was huge and bumbling as an actual city would, and the game caught the daily miserable gripes of the people in it. The missions were creative, stylish and even had betrayals, which was flat-out awesome. Also, the outside of Story missions were fun to do, Taxi, Firetruck and Police missions were some of them. The music is still some of theb est I have ever heard in any game. Overall one of the greatest games of all time.THE BAD: GLITCHY! So many glithces, so little space. I remember falling trough blue hell, heard of Dodo's who made it to the city in the sky, a lot of unfinished places in the game. The story was also a bit side-winded, and the gangs who hate you would always shoot at you. SUMMARY: My nephew introduced me to this game in 2001. At the time, I was against the Grand Theft auto series, and wrote it off as a passing fad. Little did I know I would hog my nephew's controller for nearly 6 hours. It was THAT good. I just loved going around town, shotoing people left to right, driving your car everywhere, it was just a lot of fun. I also got myself in the Story Mode, and loved it so much, it was unlike anything I had ever seen before. I immidiately bought the game, and playd it non-stop until Vice City came out over a year later. I know now it was never a mistake to like this series, and it has some good ass years to come. I don't need to recommend this game to anyone, because everyone has it and shares the same opinion as I do =) |

Fun first 3-D GTA game | 5.0 0 comments |
by Transagent from , PA, | Jul 19, 2004 |
THE GOOD: a lot of thingsTHE BAD: some things SUMMARY: for the first 3-D GTA game was a huge sucess it had everthing that was so awsome. It was mouth dropping. Well your fido who got in jail and was traveling on the bridge in a transport police vehicle but then the bridge blows up and you escape with another guy his name is 8-ball and you go to your first place luigi's club and thats where you get started. So this game has everything you go on the streets and kill innocent peds or get a hooker and bang them and your health goes up. You have a vast choice of weaponary to kill. you go on a lot of missions and do different stuff for different leaders of gangs. Jacking cars and killing peds is everyday life to make money. The cars are awsome, the graphics are dull but thats how there are since there in the city. I have nothing else to say about it and overall this was the begining of the 3D GTA launch. It has started well and ended well. |

Double_En's Grand Theft Auto III Review | 5.0 0 comments |
by Double_En from Toronto, ON, Canada | Jun 4, 2004 |
THE GOOD: - Loads of Missions - Loads of Cars, Boats and 1 Plane - Terrific Storyline - Fun Side Missions - Good Voice-Overs - Chatterbox (Radio Station) - 11 Different WeaponsTHE BAD: - Bad Aiming System - Grainy Graphics - Glitches - Some Missions Too Easy or Hard - Main Character is a Mute (Doesn't Speak) - Dodo is extremely difficult to fly - Most songs on the Radio suck SUMMARY: This game is the first GTA made for the Playstation 2. It is defantly the type of game you want if your into guns and cars and skillfull missions. GTA III brings you awesome Graphics, Tons of Brand new Cars and Boats and such forth, It gives you an option of about 11 different types of weapons for you to use on missions or kill that annoying pedestrian across the street, Be it by bare hand or the all powerfull Rocket Launcher. This game doesnt feature motor bikes, or bikes all together, no ice cream selling missions, not very many races and the main character is a Mute(Doesn't Talk). This game is pretty good prequel to Vice City even though in the time line Vicy City happens before GTA III. GTA III takes our Main Character with no name but we call him "Fido" through Liberty City based on parts of New York and such forth. You take missions throught out the course of the game from People in the Mafia, Yakuza, South Side Hoods, Yardies, and battle againest some gangs such as Triads and Columbian Cartel |
