Seeing things other people don't see | 4.5 0 comments |

The plot of this game is simple enough. Miku, a college girl, goes to Himuro mansion seeking her missing brother, who, in turn, was searching for the novelist Junsei Takamine and his two colleagues, all three of whom disappeared. Takamine had heard some of the legends associated with the mansion and had thought they would make good material for a book. Unfortunately, neither he or his colleagues lived long enough to write it.
The plot is fascinating, as you and Miku seek to solve the mystery behind the disappearances. The various clues and notebook scraps you pick up, and the way Miku links these together almost make this as much as a detective story as a horror story. You do need a modicum of intelligence to solve the mystery, but the plot is so involving you are dragged forward almost against your will.
Miku is only a young college girl and has only a camera at her disposal. With skill and care you can get through the entire game without getting hit, adding a touch of realism. There are no shops to stock up on healing items or more film, so you must plan your actions with care. The game will always make sure you have film - if you run out completely you can pick up some of the most basic, weakest type from any save camera - but it is far better to plan in advance what sort of film you wish to use, especially since it is available in various strengths and amounts throughout the game.
Without using a guide you will have almost no clue as to when a ghost or spirit will show up. This makes walking through the mansion particularly nervewracking. Some spirits will only appear for a few seconds, and you do not have to do anything about them. You can however, take photos anyway, earning points to upgrade your camera based on the quality of the shot. Other ghosts are more hostile and must be defeated. You can damage them by taking photos, and there are various ways to ensure you do more damage, such as 'zero shots', which usually occur just before you are attacked. Most fights can either be played out by randomly taking as many shots as you can until the ghost is defeated, or by taking the best quality and most damaging shots you can. The latter strategy is far more nervewracking and tricky, but it does result in far more points per shot (you can get over four thousand with this method, while the most I've ever managed to obtain by snapping as fast as possible was barely in the two hundreds mark) and less film used (two or three shots as opposed to six or seven).
This game is very spooky - a few times I've kept my boyfriend awake all night after playing it, keeping an eye out for various ghosts. The screensaver, which consists of bloody hand prints filling the screen is terrifying the first time you see it, and the feeling that something is going to jump out at you at any moment will have you screaming at the slightest sound.
The graphics are pretty good for the PS2. The game is visually pleasing, and very effective. Although the screen is kept in darkness for much of the game, what you can see only adds to the pleasure of playing. The cut scenes are fantastic too. Not amazing, but definitely not disappointing.
Many games suffer when the mystery is finally revealed, the answer not being as interesting as what many people were imagining, but this game gets it spot on. The ending is amazing.
In summary, if you like a good mystery, enjoyed Koudelka or even just plain want to be scared, definitely get this game. |

THE GOOD: Several Creepy and bone chilling ghosts Storyline is interesting,Touching and amazing Graphics are very good and make the ghosts very scary The weapon you use (Camera) is very uniqueTHE BAD: Puzzles are way too easy Not enough herbs or medicines Game is too short(I wanted to enjoy it longer) The game bosses is very hard SUMMARY: The game is more creepy then gory actually. But there's lots of anxiety you feel as you explore the mansion. Your main character is Miku who goes in the mansion to search for her brother Mafuyuu who hasn't come home. Mafuyuu went in the mansion to search for someone who's he close to which is a novelist named Takamine who went in the mansion with his two assistants to get help on working his book. The Himuro family that lived there did Shinto rituals but now the mansion is in ruins for several years.
Miku uses a camera as a weapon as she explores the mansion. Her mother's antique camera has the strange ability to exorcise ghosts, absorbing their spirit energy with each photograph. Miku's only defense against the ghosts is her sixth sense and her ability to take clear, swift photos of the ghosts as they appear. However, she only has a limited supply of film, but you'll find several films throughout the mansion.
This game is way different then the normal survival horror because it's more like mystery/puzzle then a normal survival horror game. I get so frighten at the ghosts that I shoot film frantically making me waste film because I forget that the camera doesn't do physical damage like the other horror games. The bad things about the game is that there isn't enough herbs or medicine so it's hard to find more of them in the mansion if you wasted them already. This is what annoyed me, also the ghost bosses are really hard but some of you people like challenging games. One other thing is the puzzles are way too easy and you don't even need to ask for help or look in a FAQ to figure it out. So I suggest you get it if you are a fan of these kinds of games or you just wish to try out these types of games. It's well worth it. I give it a 4 out of 5. |

THE GOOD: nearly everythingTHE BAD: nothing for now SUMMARY: graphic are OK on the ps2 but better on the xbox but other than that its a griping game that requires patients and a bit of brain power. ghouls and ghosts well ghosts and you can only fight them with a camera if you see the game you should buy it if its your cup of tea because its one of those games that you don't see the shops a lot kind of a rare game but that's where i live Buy It you'll get your moneys worth but has some slight glitches like because the game view is set so a certain position u could be bumping into walls. not for the weak hearted that's if u scare easily Ha HA HA!!! some serious skill to really master, so all in all the game is tuff to beat, and not at all suitable for pansies. Two thumbs way up! |

THE GOOD: .Unique combat using a camera .Genuinely scary .GhostsTHE BAD: .Sometimes a little too scary and hard SUMMARY: In Fatal Frame, you are Miku and she goes to Himuro Mansion to look for her missing brother Mafayu who has been missing for two weeks after going into the mansion looking for his friend and mentor Takamine ,who had also been missing. Little does Miku know, ghastly rituals and murders had been commited in the mansion and ghosts haunt the house and its grounds.
From the moment you set foot in the house the atmosphere is truly terrifying as there could be ghosts in any room you enter. Some ghosts are just wandering spirits snd some ghosts attack you and this is when the unique camera fighting system comes in. The ghosts can be harmed by taking pictures of them and the longer you have them in the viewfinder or the closer they are (and if the circle glows orange) the more damage they will take. And these aint cartoony ghosts neither. These ghosts are angry and you're gonna know it. Oh, and did I mention that they sometimes pop up randomly to attack you? he he.
The two things that let this game done where that it was a little too scary sometimes (I had a particulary pant filling experience straight after opening a door but I wont spoil it for you) and that the puzzles where a bit hard and sometimes you miss something and have to backtrack for it.
Overall, I reccomend this game and its prequel Fatal Frame 2 to anyone who enjoys a scary game. |

THE GOOD: Hmmm... let's see.. EVERYTHING!
THE BAD: Not very much.. except for when you go through a door, and you try to keep going, you do a spin and then keep going forward... or at least I do.
SUMMARY: This game is the scariest, the most Japanese-like, and most original ever! Well, not most original, cause there are some others, but it's right up there with them! I love to play this game with my best friend in her basement at night. Her sister will come and watch us play, but gets really freaked out. And if you're going "How could you be scared by a game?" I'll tell you how. Have you ever had ghosts follow you through doorways to attack you, leaving you with only a camera and a flashlight? Have you wandered around a haunted mansion to find your twin brother? I'm guessing not... and I haven't either. But if I had, this would definately be the way to go about it. If you've never played this game, IT IS A MUST! I loved it, and I'm pretty convinced that most anyone would like it. With a couple of flaws here and there, it's still really scary. I RECOMMEND!

THE GOOD: Unique battle system, terrifying atmosphere, personal photo albums, realistic ghosts, terrific storyline.THE BAD: Character running speed & maneuverability. SUMMARY: By far, Fatal Frame is one of the tops for Scariest Game Ever right alongside Silent Hill and Alone In The Dark.
First, it has the most unique battle technique I've ever seen. I've heard some people complain that a camera is a "stupid weapon", but there's a limit to the entertainment value of firearms when used in frequent repetition. I've not seen a game like this that uses something as original as a camera with spirit powers. You've got completely 3D first-person POV control of it, not to mention the ability to create your own photo album showcasing your favorite shots. It also adds to the terror of battling ghosts, because it's like you're seeing the action through your own eyes. The controller for the shutter is realistic too, because it's used with the R1 button, which is where the switch on a real camera would be.
Second, the graphics are very crisp and the animation on ghosts and live characters alike are great. The sound quality is even better because all the ambient noises will keep you on your toes. The most terrifying noise in the game is the cinema-style thump thump thump when an attacking ghost is hot on your trail. The background detail is also nothing to sneeze at, and every tiny movement will make you wonder what may be coming at you.
Third, the story is enthralling, and based on a true tale from a mysterious mansion in Tokyo. The story FMV's are brutally graphic, making you itch for more as the story progresses.
Other than Miku's painfully slow running speed and the occasionally aggravating lack of maneuvering space, this game is an asbolute gem. This title belongs in any survival horror fan's library and is worth every penny. |

THE GOOD: The use of first person view and the creepy musicTHE BAD: facing doors, could be very difficult at times. SUMMARY: I am not at all a fan of horror games after playing the unplanned and most scary game of all time sillent hill 2. This game genre is a combination of pokemon and resident evil games.
The interesting thing about this game is the use of first person mode, enabling the player to see what they producers want them to see and not see. The game has its weaknesses, opening doors could be frustrating as well as snapping pictures (which is necessary for a game of this genre). This elements however not often makes this game scare the panties out of you.
The enemies are one of the greatest things of the game, being able to see and shoot (,which at the same time makes your hand sheaver). The enemies are brilliantly created (by making them look like holograms) to scare the hell out of any one. This is a great game for horror gamers and players who like taking pictures. This game is great and worth buying. |

THE GOOD: Instead of having enough arsenal to blow up half of Tokyo and the surrounding area, all you have is a mysterious camera and your nerves to make it through alive.THE BAD: I would be running like HOLY HECK to escape soul-sucking death! I wish they would have made Miku's(the main character) movements more realistic. SUMMARY: This game is awesome! I bought it taking a chance and was immediately addicted. Solving the mystery of Himuro Mansion's evil past is terrifying fun, and having only a camera to trap it's ghostly occupants is refreshing. I liked the way the game moved along at a steady pace, and the fact that you had to use clues as you played to move on was great. The real clincher was the camera. Your ability to take photographs and earn points to build up the camera(the manual will explain this) and unlock "Bonus" and "Special" Functions(you also have to complete some tasks to unlock "Special" Funcitons) is truly up to you! Everyone will play this game through differently. Don't think that all you do is have to snap pics! Low scoring shots will hinder your ability to use your camera to it's optimum effect and you will have to start over. Tip: BE CAREFUL WITH YOU FILM AND HEALTH ITEMS! The game only gets harder as you move to a new "Night". The ghosts get more powerful and need stronger film(which is scarce) to trap them in the camera(the manual will explain this as well). Bottom line: great, scary fun!
Enjoy!

The first TRULY frightening video game | 4.8 0 comments |
by phildesign from , , | Feb 25, 2003 |
THE GOOD: An atmosphere that will make your flesh crawl - graphically very disturbing - sound that will freeze your spine.THE BAD: Slight character control niggles. Difficulty increases quite substantially after first couple of hours play. SUMMARY: This is scary. No, really - Trust me. And I don't scare easily. Okay, so Silent Hill 2 WAS unsettling (Resident Evil doesn't count: far too slow, tongue-in-cheek, dumb, zombie-blasting, b-movie trash), but this somehow transcends anything before to present you with a truly disturbing experience. And If you're thinking: "these people must be total wusses for being scared by a game" - THINK AGAIN. The idea is quite original (the camera being your only protection), so too is the believable storyline and setting. A haunted Japanese mansion? - I don't remember the last time i saw one of those in a movie, let alone a game. When i say "haunted", what I actually mean is a house of pure evil which has been home to some of the unkindest rituals in it's long, dark history ("The ropes!!!").
I'd LOVE to see this made into a movie (The ideas here are THAT good) - and not a single special visual or sound effect would need to be added that isn't included here. (No, really - the chills are THAT effective, not to mention startlingly original). Drawbacks? I can only play for a an hour or so at a time, before my nerves are in complete tatters!
If you're a fan of anything vaguely in this area you MUST get this game now. (Play alone with lights off for maximum thrills!)
The disturbing echoes of the blinded woman ("My eyes...") are just ONE of the many things that WILL haunt you for days, if not weeks, after. |
