Exceptional RPG game with an Amazing Story | 4.8 0 comments |
by dragonclawz from Belleville, ON, Canada | Jan 18, 2008 |
THE GOOD: - Very nice cel-shaded graphics; environments look very beautiful, colorful and unique - Extremely interesting story with many twists, turns, and secrets to uncover; you really get involved in what happens to these characters, and you really do not want to put down the game because you want to keep uncovering the story. You really want to solve the mysteries and stop the enemy from destroying the world and its inhabitants - Huge world that you can almost entirely explore; cool towns; travel the land and oceans by foot, boat, land animal and sky animal; the “dark world” and story involved was a very interesting idea - Amazing music that fits in with every environment, battle, etc - Many great levels to travel and complete; cool puzzles to deduce - Over 70 hours of gameplay in the first time though the game, and there is even more to do when the game is complete. More battling, leveling, and storyline await you; tons of replay value; I loved that the game takes so long to beat, and that there is so much to do, see, and uncover - Very cool characters with interesting storylines that all play out together at one point or another - Hundreds of weapons, armors, and accessories to customize your characters with; even create them, as well as items - Many different ways to level up your characters, depending on weapons you use and stats you disperse; leveling up is not easy, and takes work and time - Tons of enemies and bosses to battle - Very dramatic, exciting battles and challenging enemies; I loved the amazing RPG battle system, and the strategy it takes to defeat certain enemies and bosses - Great weapon and magic attacks; very dramatic - It’s a great struggle to cross the sea by boat to go to other areas; there are some truly strong monsters in the sea that will wipe you out - Night and day was a good idea for the game; differences between night and day, such as villager sayings and enemies, was a very good idea - An item collecting bag that can collect tons of objects and never get full - Quite a challenging RPG game - Very fun monster battle system; they even help you out in the actual gameplay, as well as in boss battles; tons of different monsters to collect - Loved the Defeated Monsters list - Tons of secrets to uncoverTHE BAD: - Why the heck does everyone talk, except the main character? - You have to go to a church to check on your experience, which is annoying - Bad town mapping system; I never really understood it most times - Money is too hard to get most times, especially when you are trying to save up to buy really expensive items - You have to have certain items to make others in the Alchemy pot, but you hardly ever have the items, or you had to sell some to get money and the items happened to be what you need, and there are no more in the game - The next set of accessories and armors for your characters are not worth the money; the stats are never much better than what you have on - Most attention to detail is great in the game, but sometimes things are missed or just poorly done. When I say this, I think of trees. They look good from far away, but up close, you can see that they aren’t even truly 3D (just a bunch of 2D layers) - Some levels and puzzles are really annoying; also, some levels are too small and there is not much to do - In some cases, the game leaves you stranded on what to do and where to go next; not enough hints are given sometimes - Most items, such as healing or other types, are pretty useless - There are not that many cool/awesome/strong monsters to collect for the Arena, or cool teams that do special attacks when on a team together - I wish there were more monster collection slots, so you could carry lots at once (maybe even every monster that you collect) SUMMARY: I was first introduced to this awesome game by a friend. It seemed very cool, so I borrowed it a few times, and then eventually bought it when I found it for a good price. You get into the game right away, wanting to uncover the beginnings of the story. You learn about the main enemy early, and begin your quest to find out how to take him down. Thus your adventure begins, and you set off across the lands in search of the enemy, meeting friends and allies and uncovering the story piece by piece.
The story itself is really cool. An evil jester steals a forbidden scepter from a castle and unleashes immense evil upon the world. Your job, as the only person near the scene who survived the horrors, is to hunt the evil jester down and stop his evil, murderous plot and return certain people to their normal healthy selves. This leads you across continents, waters, skies, and even worlds. You meet various friends and allies along the way; learn about their stories, as well as their relations to the enemy and desires to take him down and save the world from further destruction. There are plenty of twists and turns in the story that keep you hanging on and wanting more, which makes the game hard to put down. The storyline is amazing, and very long (which is great), and it makes the game last a long time. The main story will take you about 70+ hours to beat, but there is even more to do when you are done the game. There is a whole new adventure to complete, and some more story to learn about. There are more battles, leveling, and challenges to complete before you are truly done. This second portion of the game will be very challenging, and will take a little while to complete, but it is well worth the time and effort. The entire storyline is one of the best parts of the game, if not the best part.
The battle system is very cool. It is very exciting right from the start. Battles are very dramatic, beautiful, and well thought out. I loved getting into battles all the time because they were so much fun. The system is turn-based, like most RPG’s. You can choose various options, that range from normal weapon attacks, magic, intimidating monsters (to try to get them to run away and leave items), or run away (which comes in handy when you are low on health or do not want to battle at a specific time). Magic attacks are really cool and strong, as well as unique and fun, but the excitement (and about 85% of your damage throughout the game) will come from normal weapon attacks (or their special attacks). There are many strong enemies and bosses that you will face, so you will need to use great strategy on most occasions (especially in the really important boss battles). Relating to battles, the weapons your characters will use are really cool. They each have various choices of weaponry, such as swords, spears, whips, boomerangs, and your own fists. As you level up your characters, you have various options on how you want them to get stronger (and these options directly to your weapons and their possible future attacks). As you level up your weapon stats, you gain new attacks and weapon attributes and special properties. There are also many different kinds of each weapon for each character to collect. One thing very good about weapons is that when you go to buy the next strongest one, it is actually worth it, unlike armors sadly. This is hard to find in an RPG I have found (next purchases actually being worth it; having a good stat increase). I really love the battle system as a whole.
The monster battle arena is very cool. You learn about it after a little while in the game, and it really helps you out sometimes in the actual gameplay. But the main aspect of it is to collect various monsters found in the world, assemble a strong team, and try and take down challengers in the arena (for special, useful prizes). There are many different monsters to find, battle, and collect for your teams. Some monsters even get stronger as you use the more often, and as your main character (Hero) levels. This is all very fun and well worth spending some time on.
One of my favorite aspects of the game, besides the amazing story and battle system, is the fact that there is more to do when you beat the game (the main story). There is much more to explore and uncover, as well as much more leveling and battling to do. The game does not just end because the main story does, and I love that. You will be playing this game for a very long time.
There is not too much wrong with this game. As a whole, it is very well done and will be a lot of fun and take up a lot of your time. My main issues are that the main character does not talk, which makes no sense because everyone else in the game talks, and that you have to go to a church to find out your experience, which is so annoying. I want to be able to go to my characters menu and find out what each character needs to level up. Other than that, all other problems were very minor and did not make that much of a difference.
I would say that if you like RPG’s, or just really great games, pick up this game. It will be well worth your time and money. |

Dragon Warrior in America? Awesome! | 4.9 0 comments |
by Suicide Angel from , KS, USA | Jul 19, 2007 |
THE GOOD: - Cell Shaded Graphics - 80 Hours of Game-Play - Huge Environment - Many Sidequests - Battle System - Lots of Items - Tons of Abilities to Learn
THE BAD: - Mute Hero - Times the game can seem somewhat childish - Takes a long time to level up
SUMMARY: The Dragon Quest Franchise has been out in Japan for quite some time now, usually being called Dragon Warrior. This is the first game that has been released to the U.S.A. and fans seem to be loving it. Sure, there can be a few childish things about it, but it truly is an RPG of the Ages, and you won't want to pass it up. The Replay Value isn't really there, but you can force it. The only real reason you might not want to play this game again, is because it's so long the first time around!
Gameplay 10/10
The Gameplay is quite fun. You start out in a small forest and are attacked by a group of slimes. Definitely the weakest monsters in the game, but it's just so you can see the style of battle. The Battle System is Turned Based, and there are many options once engaged. You will be walking around in the Field, in a Dungeon, or anywhere else that is prone to monster attacks. Eventually, you will encounter a single, or group of monsters. You can then use commands like Attack, Spells, Defend, or Tension. Raising Tension basically doubles the next attack, and you can raise it more than once. The best way to use Tension, is to avoid having to pay MP For a Spell twice. There are other useful ways to use it as well. Once you level up, starting around level 4 or 5, you gain Skills Points. Not much at first, but you can chose where to allocate them. By placing them in different places, the Character will gain skills that he can use for a certain amount of MP, if he has the right weapon equipped. For Example, giving Axe Skill Points to Yangus allows him to learn useful Axe Skills, which he can utilize in battle. From just raising attack, to learning to abilities that allow him to get a critical hit more easily. There are lots of abilities to learn. Each Character also has their own set of weapons. Some are not completely unique to a character, but each Character has 3 main weapons, Fisticuffs (No Weapons) or their Special Skill Set. The best thing to do is usually Maxing out the Special Skill and One Main Weapon. You start out with 2 Characters on your Journey, and within a fairly short time, you'll have obtained all 4 Playable Characters. They will all be in your party at all times, so you don't really have to worry about one not leveling up as much as the other.
Graphics 10/10
The Graphics are great. Some people may not be a fan of Cell Shaded Graphics, but even if you're not, it shouldn't be enough to put you off of this game. Just as the Hero is mute, the game is still plenty enjoyable. The artist of Dragon Ball Z (Akari Toriyama) is also the person responsible the Character Design of the people in Dragon Quest VIII. You notice some strong resemblance in the spiky hair, and the way the Hero's Eyes are shaped. The Entire Landscape has small but significant things that add to the overall color experience of the game. The whole world is huge, and there are so many Vibrant colors in every part of it.
Music 10/10
The music is a bit repetitive. You'll find that the same music plays pretty much whether you're in a Field, Dungeon, or any other place that can have random monster battles. When you're in a Town, the music changes. Also, when facing a boss, it's pretty similar to the main monster music. So you've got Main, Town, and Boss Music. Not a huge variety, but it still blends in with the game pretty well. I enjoyed listening to it while I was wondering around hunting monsters. And of course you have the option to turn down specific things. If you want to turn the Background Music completely off, you can do so easily. It's a good feature if you need it, but you probably won't.
Story 8/10
Ouch. Here's the game's one main fault. Now, before you walk away, don't let me saying it has a bit of a bad story completely detour you from this game. The game is still fantastic, just the only problem is that the story can be a bit childish at times. The basic of the story is that an evil Jester stole a Magic Scepter from a Castle and everyone in it was cast under a Spell that froze them in time. The Hero is unaffected, and the King is transformed, but not frozen. The Hero is then looking after the King for the time being. The story may be a bit childish, but the game is still long and fun, and there's tons of things to do.
Overall 38/40
Overall a great game. Awesome Graphics, some nice music to play by, and a long, huge, and Vibrant world. Anyone who likes RPG's at all should look into this. Sure it has some childish moments, but the overall game is still fantastic, and provides you with tons of things to do. The game will keep you busy for a good 80 hours, plus any sidequests after that. It's easily possible to play for over 120 hours if you really get into it. Dragon Quest VIII has been sitting on the shelf for a while, so it's only $20 now. Anyone who likes RPG's in the least should definitely check out this awesome Title. |

Great RPG | 4.7 0 comments |
by Jaw Knee from Suck a dick, , faggot. | Oct 22, 2006 |
THE GOOD: The Graphics The characters (once again, the hero is a no name and voiceless character) The story (sure it is a bit corny, but it's great and in depth) The variety of things to do The length (as I recall, this is about 150 + hours long!) Voice actors HUGE worldTHE BAD:
The nameless, voiceless character The voice actors are good, but they're all British Looks a bit too much like Dragon Ball Difficulty might be a bit harsh The world is enormous, but the only bad part about that is that it might be a bit confusing.SUMMARY: Square Enix has outdone themselves and made a fantastic turn based RPG that swallows competition in every sort and form. I loved this game even more than FFVII, the King and Queen of RPGs. This game follows the journey of a young mercenary hired by a King to reclaim his land and be transformed back into a human, rather than the monster creature he is.
The Story - 9/10
-Even as the story may seem a little corny at the beginning, it's actually a very long, in depth story that stars a nameless mercenary who has been hired by the King who has been transformed into a green creature to help him reclaim the land he rules. And also help change him back to his former self. Throughout the story, you'll encounter several friends and foes. A thief who knows our hero only as "guv" joins your party through a flashback and then so forth. You are on the trail of an evil jester magician named "Dhoulmagus". I'm not going to say anything else because of spoilers, but you will love the story in this game if you love adventure RPGs.
The graphics - 8/10
-The graphics resemble that of Dragon Ball. The animation director of Dragon Ball was hired for this project, so there you go. The character models are fantastic and you can make out their facial expressions. The environments look fantastic for a cel shaded game and it's vast.
Gameplay - 10/10
The gameplay offers so much. From gambling, to recruiting, to fighting, to climbing to sailing. Find a nice casino, buy some coins and play some black jack. You are also able to recruit a selection of creatures to your party to travel with or battle with. The game is like most turn based RPGs. A battle will occur at any random time in any area of the game. The battle system is as fantastic as ever in a Square Enix RPG. It offers a selection of actions for each playable character such as an item selection, attack selection, provoke an enemy or escape and a few others in between. Each character has his or her own special function which only they are able to use. There are also several weapons that each character is allowed or two characters can handle. For example, the Hero and your partner Jessica can both use knives but only Jessica can use whips.
Characters - 8/10
You will most certainly love much of the cast. The unlikely hero doesn't have much of a personality, but he's simply the coolest one yet. The supporting party members are just as cool and have their own backgrounds and reasons to join up with you and defeat Dhoulmagus.
The supporting cast comes in a variety of colors, shapes and sizes. The main villain, Dhoulmagus, is one of the most hated characters you will ever face in gaming. From his devilish laugh, to his horrible ways and back to his devilish laugh. He'll do some of the worst things to those who stand in his way.
The voice cast is alright. Could've used a bit of work. There is hardly any variety considering they're all British. But no problem there. At least they have some talent. The voice actors are a great part of the characters. You will be able to identify what each character is feeling by the sound of their voices.
Other - 9/10
The game offers a wide variety of pretty much everything. Characters, costumes, weapons, gameplay and sidequests and sidestories are welcome too. This game will take you a lot more than the predicted time scale of 150 hours or more. The game spans the whole world of the game and takes place in several different countries. You'll encounter villages, towns and cities and climb into wells, mole caverns and even dried out oceans where you must activate a sunken ship/
Overall - 44/50
Simply put, you will not find a better true RPG on the PS2 at the moment. If you're waiting for Final Fantasy XII to come out, this game will surely pass the time and it's very addicting. With so many sidequests and such a great story, it's immersive. Almost seducing. If you're an RPG fan or just looking for a great game to play, this is the one.

THE GOOD: -Excellent Grahpics For The Ps2
-Huge World Map
-Nice Anime Look to the game
-Alchemy Pot Allows you to make your own items
THE BAD: -Music is nice, but not that great
-Buying Weapons and Amour is Diffucult
-Game itself is hard as hell
-Annoying British Accents SUMMARY: Graphics: 5/5
This game looks great for a ps2 title. This is the best Cell-Shaded Graphics I have ever seen. The World Map and the Environments you go to is also very detailed and is simply beautiful. The Character Design is great, and Akira (DBZ guy) made the main hero look a lot like Goku. (From the clothes to the Spiky Hair look when you at full Tension. Anyhow, these graphics are amazing
Music: 3.5/5
Yeah the music is okay, but not okay, the music is in a short loop, which got me mad since Square has some really good Video game music. Also, the Voice acting is good, but the British accents were driving me crazy. I can't stand that, also, it frustrates me more that the main hero is a mute
Gameplay: 5/5
This is were the game shines. The game play is old school RPG, so your not getting any Junction system, or Xenesaga's battle system, your getting Old school, take turn fighting. Which i like a most, since most RPGs now are so confusing to learn. In battle, you have attack, abilities, spells, defend, item and Charge. There is also the alchemy pot which allows you to make your own items, but can take a long time till the item is complete. but i like it. Also, this game is hard as hell, from the random battles to the boss battles, which makes me like the game even more
So, in the end, if you love Rpgs like me. then this is a must have, if you don't like RPgs, but you like Dragon ball, try it out, if you don't like any of these, then you should consider renting it. I loved the game and I'm sure you would to

THE GOOD: Easy to pick up, Good storyline, Doesn't falter in terms of length. THE BAD: Battle system is a bit simple, can take painstakingly long to level up. SUMMARY: In the days of such revolutionary rpg elements, such as the wheel in Shadow Hearts, Grandias unique battle system, and many other innovative rpgs, it's rare to see an rpg that goes back to the basics. Your classic turned based combat, with attack magic, abilities, and items. That's Dragon Quest VIII. Dragon Quest VIII won't do anything that will amaze you in innovation, or introduce anything new to you, but it still succeeds in providing a solid, easy to pick up and get into rpg experience.
The game follows the story of 4 travelers who meet in different places and combine to follow the same path. The game is very story driven, and does a good job from beginning to finish. Other than the absence of a voice for the main character, the voice acting is done well. Though less than half of the dialogue is voiced other, it's understandable. The graphics aren't going to amaze you, but they get the job done. The one thing Dragon Quest does have is a fairly unique skill system, allowing you to improve your use of different weapons as well as your magic with full customization in your hands. Not to mention the fact that the main character is able to use a boomerang, very cool way to shy away from the standard, swords and staffs you see in rpgs.
Overall the game is fairly challenging, with many easy bosses, as well as hard ones. You will have to do some leveling up outside of the storyline, which may be bothersome to some, as it literally takes hours to level up, when you get deep into the game. The length of the game is quite long, and depending on how many sidequests you partake in, could take you anywhere from 70-110 hours, which is nice. It feels like just about the right length. When you do finally reach the end, you'll feel like it's about time to you've beat the game, but not that it was a burden as far as time spent.
Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, is an old school rpg, that your probably used to if you've been playing since the playstation, nintendo 64, and even the Nintendo days. It gets the job done with interesting characters, and an interesting storyline. I reccomend that any rpg fan should at least check this one out.

Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King | 5.0 0 comments |
by Linkrules5 from , , Scotland | Jun 11, 2006 |
THE GOOD: Beautiful graphics Interesting characters British accents Combat is enjoyable Alchemy pot Some tricky bossesTHE BAD: Music tends to go in a short loop (although it's still good) Random battles may put some people off SUMMARY: I'm going to start out by saying that this is certainly one of the best looking games on PS2, or any console for that matter. The cel-shading seems to fit perfectly with the game, and all the characters and environments look great.
You are a palace guard, mysteriously unaffected by a curse that leaves your palace in ruins and it's people turned into plants after a Jester called Dhoulmagus steals the magic sceptre kept in the castle. The hero is mute and you get to name him (I called him Orta). You set off with King Trode, who's been turned into a toad-like thing, and Princess Medea, who's taken on the guise of a horse. You're joined by Yangus, an ex-bandit, and later by Jessica and Angelo, and all these people are after Dhoulmagus for their own reasons.
This a quite a traditional style RPG, with many traits of that genre. For example there are random battles. They occur with just the right frequency, allowing you to travel a reasonable distance without being attacked so you don't get annoyed. The combat is also turn-based, but it's very enjoyable and snappy.
Of course you gain experience from all these random battles and level up. You gain skill points which you can choose to allocate to the various attributes of the character. After allocating a certain amount of skill points to an attribute you gain a new skill or move in that area.
The landscape is vast. You're free to travel wherever you please around the giant, beautiful-looking land looking for treasure or just wandering around. The characters all have distinctive personalities and back-stories, and they all have British accents. Being British, I liked this a lot. The voices fitted the characters well and it almost felt like the game had been made with me in mind.
The alchemy pot is a nice way of making new and rare items you can't get any other way. There's a wide variety of weapons and armour to buy but the best items can't be bought. That's where you have to use thr alchemy pot. It's not overly confusing but still has a good depth for making new items, and you often find snippets of recipies and have to figure out the rest from clues.
Overall I found this to be not just the best RPG on the PS2, but also one of the best games on the console. It's a very traditional style RPG which won't appeal to everyone, but if you like that sort of game as I do then you can't afford to miss out on this game. |

Dragon Quest VIII Review | 4.5 0 comments |
by RPG_Master44 from Still drunk, , and stoned... | Jan 26, 2006 |
Dragon Quest VIII is like it's name implies, the 8th game in Japan's long running successful RPG series. Dragon Quest/Warrior has always been a favorite of mine growing up and continues the old school RPG style to this day. Part 8 is no exception to this.
First off I gotta say I enjoyed this title a lot. In the world of gaming today where it's all Final Fantasy and big graphics with action gameplay it's so rare to find a series still keeping the old school style alive. Dragon Quest VIII offers great things in terms of it's overall gameplay and enjoyment. This is a game that can't be judged on graphics or battle system like most others but it's enjoyment factor.
Storywise it's solid. You follow the Hero (whatever you name him) and his companions Yangus; a former thief, Jessica; daughter to a noble family who's brother was taken from her by the villain of the story Dhoulmagus, and Angelo; a have fun type of guy but was an orphan young and hopes to avenge the death of Abbot Franicisco, the only one he looked to as a father. The background of the hero is he was a guard to Trodain Castle, which was brought upon a curse after it's sealed Septre was stolen by Dhoulmagus. The only survivors were him and the King and Princess of Trodain, Trode and Medea. The Hero sets off on a journey to help Trode and Medea remove their curse on the Castle and themselves who were turned into a Monster and Horse (Trode looks like a Toad, thus his name).
The battle system is basic turn style combat. Attack, Defend Magic, Flee, Intimidate and Special skills. You get special skills through leveling up and using skill points on your preferred weapon. Each character has their own unique skills and weapons they can use so there is much to experiment with there. Like I said it's pretty simple and can get boring over time if your not used to these types of games.
Gameplay is fun in this game. You have a lot to explore in towns and the world map. You can search chests, break pots for items and even feel into pouches. The World map is filled with monsters to catch, areas to explore with both a ship and by flying (comes much later of course). It really offers a lot of fun side quests and extras, one of my favs being monster hunting and arena battles.
Later in the game you get the chance to catch and form your own monster teams you can use in battle and in the arena to win prizes and such. The difficulty is tough and the depth in monsters and teams is great. As there are many monsters to find and appear in all areas some depending on what time you search for them. They are also effective allies in battle which further adds to their usefulness.
Another ability you get in this game and offers much depth is alchemy. With Alchemy you can combine certain items, materials, weapons and equipment to form stronger items and such. There are many different types of items you can make and such depending on where your imagination guides you. Of course you get recipes and tips along the way from people and books you read to help you but it is possible to make stuff on your own.
The music in this game is pretty good. It goes along nicely in this game depending on the scene and such. Although the music is the same in many areas like towns and such so it doesn't offer a great variety like most games (example Final Fantasy). Still the music that is there is good so it's not a bad thing.
This game has a lot to offer, it's depth is solid while not overwhelming for most. Simple to play but hard to master. It has great replay value and difficulty throughout. Overall very good game, enjoyable and pleasure to play. Really one of the only good RPGs on the PS2 so check it out if your a fan of RPGs or this series. |

THE GOOD: - Cell-shaded graphics (I personally like them). - Able to explore the world map to it's fullest. - Transportation vehicles. - Sabercats >=o! - Hard difficulty (a must for RPGer's). - Monster Arena - FUN!THE BAD: - Mute Hero. - Repetitive music (which is why there is a mute button). - Only 4 characters. SUMMARY: First off I have got to say this brings life into the rather dead RPG game selection. It's an instant classic, and kept many of the same successful RPG elements as other titles. It isn't complicated so you can jump right in and play without much instruction.
For any person to likes RPG's and like a challenge, this is the game for you! The difficulty in this game is hard, which makes for fun game play. Bosses are a good challenge to. As soon as your thrown in the game and go on your first quest, you fight a boss. You had better be prepared to because he isn't the easiest boss you have ever fought.
The side quests in this game are very entertaining. Later on in the game you will get access to the monster arena. In DQ8 while on the world map you'll see monsters roaming around. Don't fight these until you get access to the quest to collect the starter 3 monsters to open the arena. Once you have your monster team, and beat a couple of ranks you can use your team in battles outside of the arena like you would use summons. This is a nice addition to the game play.
All in all, this is a classic RPG that provides a great challenge. I recommend it to any RPGer for a buy but if you're still not sure then rent it. This game should not go un-noticed. |

End the Quest! | 1.0 0 comments |
by DarkKnight from Blue Springs, MO, USA | Jan 1, 2006 |
Dragon Quest, if you care, is a game that existed mainly in Japan. But for some reason DQ 8 came into America. Now when I heard this I decided to get myself a copy because I heard a lot of good things about it.
WASTE OF MONEY!
Lets begin with the story: An evil jester gets some kind of power and turns a king into a frog monster, and the princess into a horse. If that wasn't 'bad' enough he also fills a castle with weed... But one soldier in the castle manages to survive the ordeal... You. (You can name the Hero whatever you want, I named him Kakarot for my game.) Now the game starts off with you and your best buddy, Yangus. You two, along with the transformed king and princess, set out on a quest to find the jester and make everything right again.
Now let me take the time to tell you that the story is boring as hell, with no twist at all. That jester seems to be behind every bad thing that happens in the world. "That jester killed my brother! That jester controlled a squid! That jester raped my mother!" If something bad happened, blame that jester!
Gameplay: Its an RPG so you can expect inns, weapon/armor shops, item shops, and leveling up. The world map is huge, you can go almost anywhere (If the story allows it) The ability to control the camera is nice too. As you run around in the world map you will no doubt have a random encounter. (RPGs still do that?) Now this is were the game gets bad. During a battle you will face you enemy or enemies. Be it slime or some evil cat. However you only see the bad guys, wheres your party? It turns out that your party is behind the camera... as if you are looking through Kakarot's eyes. What is this? First Person Role Playing Game? The only time you do see yourself is when you attack.... or get attacked.
Lets talk about what happens in a battle. You can Attack, Defend, Use item, Magic, Techs, and even Charge up. There is also an option to scare the enemy away... which is useless. Now what happens when you win a battle? Cool victory dances? Fanfare music? Nope! You just put your weapons away and go on with your quest. Whenever you level up, you get skill points for that character. You can put the skill points into 5 slots, 4 of which are weapons that character can use, and the 5th one is a special ability.
What really bugs me is the games difficulty. Example: I spend 3 hours running around a cave to level up and gain experience. I level Kakarot and Yangus up a few times and I can kill most enemies in 2 hits so I decided to take on the boss. As soon as the battle starts however he kicks my ass! (Despite him being a fish) The bosses are way too strong in this game, I guess you are expected to waste an entire day leveling up. You'll find yourself healing after every attack. How stupid is that!? I didn't think 75 damage would come so early in the game... when the character's HP is around 200!
So what happens when you die? Well you get revived in a church, after losing half your money! I'd rather take my "Game Over"
Graphics: Well if you watch Dragon Ball Z before (Before everything got stupid) then you'll notice something familiar. That is because the person behind the DQ 8 Characters is also the DBZ guy. (Akira... something) I was having some weird deja vu considering I bought this game and DBZ Budokai at the same time. The most noticeable character is the hero. Who can be compared to Goku. Same wide eyes? Check. Orange and blue clothes? Check. Ssj style hair during an energy attack? Got that too.
Music: There is only about 5. Yeah. 1)Town music 2)Inside a shop/inn music 3)World map music 4)Battle music(which is the same for both normal enemies and bosses) 5)Dungeon music.
I couldn't stand to play further into the game to listen for any new music.
Heh if I had bothered to finish the game I could tell you how much replay factor it has. Not that I'd want to replay this crap though.
The only saving grace for this game is the Final Fantasy XII Demo, the way an RPG should be! |

THE GOOD: The overworld is humongous with no invisible walls. The only boundaries are unscaleable terrain. The characters all have quirky personalities, apart from the mute HERO. Each character can use a variety of weapons, including their bare hands. Jessica's effing hawt. =D There's a lot of customization available for each party member. The villian isn't a typical badass guy in a cape with spiky hair; It's a jester called Dhoulmagus. Epic story. The characters have more than four animations each; More than most RPGs. Art of Akira Toryama, famed creator of Dragonball and DBZ. Very odd, creative monsters. Many sidequests. Angelo's effing hawt. =DTHE BAD: Random battles are quite annoying. You lose HP rather fast, causing you to use MP and Items very frequently. Can be very difficult at times. Every single character has a Britsh accent. Nothing against the English, but I'm from Texas, and it just gets a bit annoying after four hours. King Trode's voice is especially frustrating. Saving and Reviving can be a big hassle. Most alternate weapons are completely useless, and Fisticuffs are just plain stupid. HERO, Yangus, Jessica, and Angelo are the only characters you get in the entire game. Not too bad for most, but I just like having a variety of characters in RPGs. SUMMARY: This is one of the best RPGs on the PS2, hands down. The story can be a teensy bit boring at times, but usually it keeps your interest. The gameplay is classic turn based 4 vs ? fighting, something that's been suspiciously absent as of late. It's been a lot of quirky, oddball fighting systems and real time combat for the past few years, which has left me yearning for a game like this for awhile.
The graphics are Dragonball Z inspired, because, like I said, Akira Toryama did the character designs. This is also the reason HERO's hair sticks up like a Super Saiyan as he goes into Super High Tension.
The colorful and friendly appearence of the world and character/monster models are decieving, however. The storyline is wraught with death and tragedy, vengeance and malice. It's much darker than you'd think.
The basis of the storyline is that a jester, Dhoulmagus, stole a super-powerful scepter out of Castle Trodain. He turned King Trode into a toad-like creature and turned Princess Medea into a horse. The scepter's power was too much for him, and as such he accidentally released a curse upon the castle, covering it in thorny vines and turning everyone inside into pseudo-living plants, trapped in time. Everyone, that is, except you.
As HERO, you've set out with King Trode and Medea on a journey to find Dhoulmagus, running into the bandit Yangus along the way. Some talk is exchanged, a bridge collapses, you save his life, he joins you. Soon after that, you meet the sharp-tongued mage, Jessica, and the healing swordsman, Angelo, and the five of you (six if you count Medea) try to find Dhoulmagus, for your own reasons. (Actually, Yangus is just following you around, he doesn't really have a beef with Dhoulmagus.)
All in all, this is a superb game that you should not hesitate to buy if you are an RPG fan. If you're not, try it first, but I personally enjoy it greatly.
(And I'm not biased towards RPGs, I'm a Halo player also.) =) |
