The Painful Death of Crash Bandicoot | 2.9 0 comments |
by Big_Burta from , , Imaginationland | Jul 3, 2007 |
THE GOOD: -Good sound effects -Excellent character models -Hilarious stunts and dialog (Cortex's screams are the best) -Still kind of fun at firstTHE BAD: -Horrific gameplay -Too short to be Crash Bandicoot (all the other games were good and lengthy) -The difficulty takes you out of the experience, so the fun doesn't last too long -Annoying music -Boring graphics -All the effort you use just to get one thing done is pretty unsatisfying SUMMARY: The not-so-recent change in Crash’s world has been drastic. When I first heard about this game, I thought it would be awesome. But I was totally unaware of the disaster this game would bring.
Graphics: 7.7 -- This dry beauty is a sad example of why good developers like Naughty Dog should never sell great mascots like Crash Bandicoot. The character models look better than ever, complete with great detail and effortless animation. Some of the designs didn’t really match the character (some of the tougher characters’ designs are too cutesy), but those characters are very insignificant anyway. Also, the animation for the enemies and background characters is kind of slow, both physically and mentally. Not that it really matters, since you never see those characters a second time or those enemies in more than one level. The level designs aren’t too great, either. There is nothing about them that makes them any different from your average platformer. Yes, they are well detailed, colored, and shaded, but they’re so boring to look at. Also, they severely lack the realistic texture that I’ve seen in previous titles. Grass, dirt, water, and ice all look more like something from a child’s beach play set than the real thing. Wood, rock, glass, and metal have the same problem. The flat, unimaginative ‘detail’ does not make up for it. Really, the levels look great, but they’re so lackluster compared to all the other Crash games I’ve played (that’s what happens when greedy companies sell their good products). On the contrary, the effects aren’t so bad. They too are really dull, but they’re quite nice at the same time. When the time calls for it, you will see some bland particles, but those pathetic little sparks are pretty good for they’re irrelevance because they can really light up the screen. As far as graphics go, this isn’t bad at all. It’s just so lifeless compared to most other games.
Sound: 7.5 -- Like the visuals, this game’s audio is great yet nothing really special. The music is definitely something else. First off, it was obviously randomly assigned to the levels, since almost all of the songs would be better suited for other places than their current locations. Shouldn’t crazy music go with crazy levels? I mean, intense levels have watered down music, while milder ones have a more eccentric soundtrack. What kind of music is this anyway? It’s just so bizarre, as it has these background singers in every track. And it’s so incredibly annoying! There are a handful of songs I liked, but most of them will drive you up the wall. Also, I’ve noticed that their distractive nature makes the levels even more maddening than they already are. Fortunately, the sound effects are pretty good and make up for the lousy music. Many of the various happenings are equipped with a respectable sound. But it would have been nice if they included other necessities like footsteps, character motions other than spinning or jumping, and the noise of mechanical contraptions. Also, I never really paid much attention to the sound, but that’s mostly due to the obnoxious composition. They could have been a little louder, but I’m fine with this. The dialog is some of the best I’ve seen in a Crash Bandicoot title. Although they could speak with a little more enthusiasm, it’s still well done. They sound like they know what they’re saying (most of the time), and that definitely counts for something. Plus, some of it is so funny (like when Cortex shoots a farmer with his Ray Gun) This may not be the best Crash sound system ever recorded, but it’s still pretty good overall.
Handling: 2 -- This is the WORST gameplay I’ve ever even seen in a game. Even from the beginning, playing this game is a nightmare! The camera should have been a breeze, since you have total control over it, but it keeps trying to go in its own direction when you need to adjust in most. And it tends too come in too close, making it difficult to navigate large areas and thus results in death. However, when it chooses to cooperate, the camera can be useful for certain obstacles--but not by much. Like the camera, you would expect the controls to be a snap. Well, they’re only easy to use; they just don’t work well in a lot of spots. Even if you crawl under a laser or spin an enemy before it can get you, there’s still a possibility that it will get you. I mean, really, simply moves that we’ve known forever should be well adapted to the environment, right? Well, apparently, that doesn’t matter. In all the previous Crash games, the controls were exactly what you needed to advance the stages. But in Twinsanity, you are required to jump great distances, attack quick airborne enemies, and outrun baddies. These activities sound like a fun challenge. But sadly, they are far from enjoyable; the jumps are just too imprecise and distant, the enemies attack before you even have an opportunity to defend yourself, and the baddies are downright unfair, as they quickly catch up to you when you had no way to outrun them. So, as you can easily imagine, playing this game is like playing an ordinary game without thumbs. You have to rely on button combos, for one thing, but you mainly don’t have all the necessities to play this game. Even from the beginning, the levels are hard enough to be one of the final stages. Worse still, you get killed by the enemies just from touching them, even if they are nothing dangerous. Unreachable bats and natives with spears are acceptable, but background animals should be completely harmless. Additionally, you often come across slippery platforms, in which you can easily run off the edge after a jump simply because the programmers were too lazy to stop the motion. Even the simplest jumps feel like landing an airplane. Normal games bring you to an immediate stop while platforming. And the fact that there are more tiny platforms than before only makes it worse. If it’s that hard just from the beginning, just imagine what the ending is like. Unless you’re very skilled with platformers and have a very long fuse, please avoid playing this game at all costs.
Entertainment: 7.3 -- The excruciating difficulty can often render this game unappealing. But I did find this game to be pretty fun before I was exposed to what this game hides behind its innocent scenery. The new platforming style offers far more freedom, and it’s a pretty nice break from the crammed spaces of the past. Also, there are still some classic level types, which prevents this title from becoming a separate adventure. And I have to admit, some of these levels are quite fun (that is, if you can get used to the poor gameplay). Unfortunately, the difficulty will get to you, and you will gradually find this game to be less and less appealing. The only thing that can keep you going is the humor, and I admit it was pretty funny, but it get's old as you move on. The game’s entertainment level is different for everyone, so I strongly recommend you rent it prior purchasing it. If you love it and don’t find it too hard, buy it. If you think it’s fun but don’t like the difficulty, just rent it every now and then when you feel like playing it. If you hate it, you can always return it. This game is only worthy of the most skilled gamers, and they all think it's boring.
Features: 4.8 -- Unlike much of the Crash universe, I didn’t find much in this game. For starters, it only has a small range (16) of excessively long levels, rather than lots of short and sweet ones. And there isn’t much to do at all. Your only goal is to make it to the end of the level, occasionally collecting a crystal. It is rare for you to do something other than that. There are a couple of bosses, but they require little strategy and are less than satisfying. In addition to a lame game, you will be asked to collect six colored gems in each level, totaling in 96 gems. And collecting even a few of them is hell, because you will need perfect timing, very quick movement, and very sharp eyes to get just one. With each gem, you unlock a boring bonus feature, which is hardly even worth your efforts, something like concept art, comics based on the level, and brief movies. If you can get them all, you unlock a totally lame bonus movie, which is worth 0% of the stress to get these gems. Other than that, there is nothing in the game. It’s short, it’s demanding, it’s uncreative, and it’s probably one of the biggest wastes of time today.
Replay Value: Low
Overall: 5.8 -- I am very dissatisfied with what I found in this package. The graphics and sound are unnoticeable or just plain annoying. The gameplay will cause even the calmest gamers to blow their top, and it renders the game unlikable. And it’s not even worth all the effort. Do yourself a favor and avoid this heart attack of a game. |

A New Breath Of Life For The Wild Bandicoot | 4.4 0 comments |

THE GOOD: Free-roaming Great music Cortex is playable Absolutely hilariousTHE BAD: Slightly glitchy SUMMARY: For those of you who didn't see the "good" ending of The Wrath Of Cortex (I don't blame you, it's not easy), you may have a bit of catching up to do before getting into this one. Surprisingly, the "good" ending is actually the basis for the introduction to Twinsanity as opposed to just being a hilarious ending. Three years on, Cortex has built himself a laboratory on an iceberg close to Crash's sunny home, N. Sanity Island. Sure enough, Cortex is soon back on the island, causing mayhem.
Unlike previous installments, there is a large story to the game this time, and a great cast of characters. Many classic Crash characters return, with classic bosses such as Dingodile and even N. Brio making appearances, plus cameos by other classics like Ripper Roo and Oxide. You also meet a few new characters, including a skunk who gives you a perspective on what it's like to be a typical video-game enemy. The main baddies this time are Victor and Moritz, a pair of mutant parrots from the Tenth Dimension, who for reasons known only to themselves have a grudge against Cortex. This soon leads to Crash and Cortex teaming up to travel to the Tenth Dimension and defeat the Evil Twins themselves. Cortex's "niece", Nina Cortex, is a student at Cortex's old school, the Academy of Evil, and joins the duo as a playable character in their bid to stop the Evil Twins.
Graphically, the game is sound, with plenty going on to look at. Water lashes the shores, volcanoes erupt and black holes rip the sky apart, and characters are all textured well.
The music in the game is fantastic. All of the music is performed using no instruments other than the human voice, and it sounds absolutely amazing. Considering this single instrument, the themes are very varied. The voice acting is great.
Fans of earlier Crash Bandicoot games may be surprised at the new style. Instead of a "Warp Room" with a number of levels branching off from it, most of which follow a set path, the new system is completely free-roaming. Crash works surprisingly well with this system of play,
The new gameplay mechanics are generally amazing. With a Crystal to fight over, the pair can unintentionally team up to get around. The "Rollerbrawl" mechanic involves Crash and Cortex fighting as they roll around the stage, which is original, but slightly difficult to control. To me, the best mechanic has to be "Humiliskate", in which Crash jumps onto Cortex back and uses the Doctor as a snowboard, performing flips and grinds (VERY painful to watch) among other manoeuvres.
However, the game does have its problems. The game has plenty of glitches, ranging from harmless ones where you will fall over for no apparent reason in a safe area to ones which make you lose more than one life at once. Another nasty problem is that in one level, there is a section where you have to jump over a gear to continue. If you haven't hit a switch a fair distance back it's almost impossible, and even if you have you need to jump at just the right time to get over the gear - not easy when you're moving at a high speed.
Cortex and Nina join the fun as playable characters. Nina plays relatively similarly to Crash except with the ability to climb using special devices, while Cortex relies on his ray gun to help him survive. And while playing as either of them, you have Uka Uka protecting you instead of Aku Aku, which is nice, letting you play from the perspective of Cortex fully for the first time.
Levels include Cortex being chased by a swarm of mad bees, Cortex getting around using sewage pipes, and Cortex being pursued by a ferocious mutant bandicoot. Aside from the Cortex bashing, the levels are fairly varied, ranging from the tribe villages of N. Sanity Island, to the corridors of the Academy Of Evil, to the volcanoes of the Tenth Dimension. Objectives can include infiltrating a hi-tech battleship, taking on N. Gin aboard his latest hovering machine and being chased by a walrus - all in the same level.
The cut-scenes and FMVs really are absolutely hilarious. The story is fantastic, and is full of jokes and hilarious scenes. The only problem is that the cut-scenes cannot be skipped, and while the cut-scenes are undoubtedly entertaining the first time you see them, watching Cortex having a long argument with a group of penguins for the fifth time because you've been defeated by a very unfair (read: nearly unavoidable) enemy up ahead does become slightly repetitive.
Overall, Crash Twinsanity is a great game which pushes the series in a new direction. The credits sequence promises "CRASH BANDICOOT WILL RETURN...". Let's hope he does in something even better than this. |

Well check out the latest in Crash's platforming adventure so far. It holds the name, "TWINSANITY." Is this game just as much rubbish as Wrath of Cortex was? Oh heck no. Could it have been better? Oh heck yes. Well first off you'll notice you can move ANYWHERE. You're not limited to a pathway. Is this good? Well.....yes AND no. Yes because it takes a new step for Crash. No because it doesn't seem to work TOO well. But it does manage to keep its players entertained. Next off you'll noticed the game is chock full of hilarity. Cortex mostly. This game has great and funny dialouge and a lot of jokes that aren't really orignal, but instead make fun of other things. In some parts, if you listen closely, they even make fun of how bad Wrath of Cortex sold in stores!
But enough with that. Let's go on to more IMPORTANT things. Shall we?
Graphics ain't the best in the world, but they do improve upon other games. The graphics defintly do beat Wrath of Cortex. Everything moves and you're in a living world. Now if only the graphics were just a bit cleaner. Some things in this game do seem kind of sketchy and underdone. But overall, just fine. The graphics are medicore.
Framerate. Here's something I'm going to have to complain about. The framerate. When there's enough action, the game slows down DRASTICALY. And sometimes, the game will even FREEZE! This could've been improved.
Entertainment. The game certainly has its shining moments. It's pure fun throughout the whole game, but when you get to certain parts, the game becomes even more fun as the puzzles are creative and very well done. The most complicated and most amazing puzzle in the game you'll probaly notice is DEFINTLY pushing Cortex through the sewers.
Creativity. Hmm....well...in gameplay, it's defintly creative. In humor, they aren't so orignal. They just make fun of other things and mimic jokes. Nevertheless, it's very funny indeed.
Camera. One word for the camera. BAD.
Sound. The last thing I need to review. It's top notch. Cortex's voice is brilliantly done. The dialouge is snappy and the way it's simply DELIVERED from the characters is fantastic. Some sounds come from past Crash games, and it will feel like home.
Overall, this game is pretty good. It could have been improved in a lot of ways. Like the CAMERA for instance. But if you're a Crash fan or a platformer fan, get this game. It's worth it. |

THE GOOD: Crash and Cortex become friends (kind of)
Challenging game
Good Graphics
In some rounds you can use Cortex alone.
Decent stage designsTHE BAD: Crash and Cortex become friends (Weird)
The replay value is kind of low
Sometimes it's hard to control the camera SUMMARY: Difficulty: Medium
I have recently beaten this game. It's fun and challenging. Replay Value is kind of low since once you've collected all krystals and everything you probably won't want to go through this game again. This game also has an save feature with an option to enable or disable it.
In this game you won't always use Crash and Cortex together. Sometimes you'll be using Crash alone or Cortex alone or that one freeky girl (I forgot her name). Crash fans be sure to check this game out.
I rate this game a 4/5 (8/10). |

THE GOOD: Dialogue That's it, Seriously...THE BAD: Everything except the dialogue. SUMMARY: What the heck happened to the Crash Bandicoot I once loved, no, respected. Because sierra have taken the successes over past developers and THREW IT AWAY! The story sucks. "oooh oooh, there are evil twins taking over the island, I'll team up with the guy whose trying to KILL me!" The graphics suck and if you attempt to jump on a platform, you had better be lucky because TRYING to land somewhere WON'T WORK. The only redeeming feature is the speech because it is funnier than the rest of the entire game.... put together.... times 3.
I would seriously consider it if you are a fan of the franchise but if you aren't and want to buy a Crash game, don't buy this!! Because you will be VERY VERY disappointed. I was.

THE GOOD: 1.Gameplay 2.Cutscene 3.Character looks 4.Introduction 5.The Crash/Cortex moves 6.RollerbrawlTHE BAD: 1.Getting hit with spears while having mask. 2.Slow cutscenes 3.Easy bosses 4.Needs more characters 5.Falling in water needs to improve so Crash can swim 6.Too short SUMMARY: The game's ok.Not too good on the bright side, and great with the storyline.Getting the gems are complicated and you have to catch on to the game. The swimming should improve so Crash can swim. The first of the game,(introduction), is nice with a Cooc, Cortex, and the butterfly. It's good for the 4.9, but not too good for a 5.9.It's also called a catch-on-game-that-gets-boring-after-a-while-junk.If you can't see the inner part of the Rollerbrawl, why get the game? |
