BackgroundDespite what many tabloids and Mayan calendar predicted, the world didn't literally end in 2012. But it sure changed. In the Shadowrun universe magic is real, but it's power grows and wanes to almost nothing following a 5,200 year cycle. In late 2012 magic began to return to the world, and as it did Elf and Dwarf babies were born to seeming normal human parents who carried long-dormant genes. And through "goblinization", unfortunate teenagers who carried dominant Ork or Troll genes changed in large meta-humans with a monstruous appearance. Mundane animals began to transform into all sorts of creatures long thought to be myth and legend. And Great Dragons began to awaken from their long hibernation.
Over the course of the next four decades, the world transformed not only by the rise of magic but into a cyberpunk dystopia, made possible through the rapid advancement of cyber technology—people were able to replace limbs and internal organs with powerful synthetic counterparts, granting them superhuman strength and reflexes. The World Wide Web was transformed into something called the Matrix—a virtual reality like network that persons could immerse themselves in with a datajack implant in their brain. Governments have in large part been replaced or fully controlled by megacorporations.
For regular citizens there were really only two options. Become a "wageslave" for the megacorporations, working long hours and living off meagre wages, or become a Shadowrunner. Shadowrunners are criminals-for-hire who use a combination of technology, magic, and street smarts to survive. They are often little more than corporate pawns, doing the dirty work that wage-slaves won’t soil their hands with, but occasionally they act as the only protection citizens can turn to.
Shadowrun Returns "Dead Man's Switch" campaign takes place in the year 2054. You're a Shadowrunner who is struggling to find a job. And old friend and accomplice has just been murdered in Seattle and it's up to you to find the killer and exact some street justice. You'll find yourself tangled up in a mystery that involves a string of murder victims with missing organs, corrupt law enforcement and rival street gangs.
